The Obama administration today endorsed new oil and gas exploration along the Atlantic Coast, setting the stage for possible future drilling lease sales.
The announcement by the Interior Department sets into motion what will be at least a five year environmental survey to determine whether and where oil production might occur.
There are also no guarantees the administration will approve drilling permits at the end of the environmental review.
"The president's actions have closed an entire new area to drilling on his watch and cheats Virginians out of thousands of jobs," said Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., who chairs the House Natural Resources Committee.
The announcement "continues the president's election-year political ploy of giving speeches and talking about drilling after having spent the first three years in office blocking, delaying and driving up the cost of producing energy in America," he said.

Where I come from drilling is exploration. The only way to truly explore and find out if there are commercial quanities oil is to drill.
What is the point of exploration if no drilling or extraction ever comes of it?
Surprising little fact: There are pockets of oil in some of the geosynclines between the various mountain ranges in Nevada, which, though relatively small as oil fields go, are intensely productive on a per-acre basis. Because of the frequent seismic activity in the state, these pockets are sometimes very fragmentated, but the sheer wealth of a discovered pocket may make recovery highly profitable on the short-term.

Exactly. This was done for one reason and one reason only: so that he can go out on the campaign trail and tell the ignoramuses that will vote for him that he’s approved all kinds of exploration. He’ll conveniently omit the “but not drilling” part, as will his sycophants in the press, and the morons that make up 57% of our country will swallow it w/o a second thought.
