JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Birth records for presidential and vice presidential candidates would need to be publicly available for those appearing on Missouri ballots.

Political parties would be required to give the secretary of state's office proof of their candidates' identity and that they are natural born citizens of the U.S. Write-in presidential candidates also would need to provide documentation. The records would be open to the public.

Two questions:

1) Will it be in effect for the November elections?
2) Will any documentation submitted be accepted prima facie or will there be vetting of documentation submitted?

This is VERY GOOD NEWS. I understand that it needs to pass an additional vote in the Missouri House & then pass in the Senate before going on to the Governor.

This is COMMON SENSE legislation but you can expect the Democrats to be fighting this tooth & nail. If this becomes law in a battleground state such as Missouri, it is VERY BAD NEWS FOR THE DEMOCRATS.

Are the birth records required to have an official seal of the state or just copies of a certificate of birth?

No eligible candidate should object to this law.

Ten bucks says that this will be overturned by some Federal judge...very probably a Clinton or Osama Obama appointee.

The legal ambiguity will be whether the Secretary of State of Missouri has the right to define “natural born citizen” and what constitutes “proof” of that status.

Did they clear this legislation w the anti-birthers? I don’t think they’re going to like seeing their poor, delicate, easily-offended superhero humiliated like this. Shouldn’t Obama be allowed simply to submit a signed affidavit? After all, he’s never lied yet...has he?

I hope this becomes law in time for Nov. High gas prices are dropping Obama’s poll numbers faster than Bill Clinton’s pants when a Lewinsky is on the way. The less popular Obama is, the easier it becomes to get legislation like this through. Hopefully this requirement will go all the way.

No, the "Secretary of State of Missouri" does not have "the right to define “natural born citizen”"

That is a part of the Constitution and any ambiguity in its definition should be settled by the federal courts.

The gov of MO will not sign it. He is an Obama Dem and has his own problems with a corruption case going on. I would love to see it happen but this isn’t going anywhere.

Yes, Missouri will definitely deserve that moniker if they pass this legislation. It will be interesting to follow the attempts to get this enacted and signed.

The Missouri House has 163 members (105 Republicans, 54 Democrats & 4 Independents) and the Senate 34 members (26 Republicans and 8 Democrats). Missouri has a Democrat Governor (Jay Nixon).

I don’t know if Nixon would veto this but, if he does, it would take a 2/3 vote in both the House & Senate to override the veto. Attempts to defeat this would be, IMHO, very dangerous for the Democrats since, as ‘thecodont’ says above, “no ELIGIBLE candidate should object to this law”.

It would take a solid monolith of ALL Democrats to prevent this from becoming law if the Republicans held together. I don’t know how many RINOs Missouri has.

"Will celebrate when it becomes law."

Even then, you may want to hold off on popping the cork on the champagne. See recent events in Georgia for reference.
