Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich recently met in secret with GOP rival Mitt Romney at the former Massachusetts governors hotel in New Orleans, according to a Gingrich admirer close to the former Georgia congressmans campaign.
Mr. Gingrich did not deny the meeting in his response to questions from The Washington Times, but did deny he had cut any deal to end his struggling presidential bid.
The two Republican rivals met at 7 a.m. Saturday, the morning of the Louisiana primary that would turn out to be another in a series of dismal defeats for Mr. Gingrich, leaving the man who led the partys congressional renaissance in the 1980s and 1990s in third place, well behind Mr. Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.
We are downsizing the campaign, not suspending it, he said Tuesday. I am in Maryland, North Carolina and Delaware next week, he said. We have events already scheduled in Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Missouri.
He explicitly said there was no understanding that Mr. Romneys big donors would help retire the Georgians campaign debts of more than $1 million or that Mr. Romney had offered him a position in the next GOP administration in exchange for dropping out.
There is no agreement of any kind and I plan to go all the way to Tampa, Mr. Gingrich said, referring to the August....

I'm in, til Newt's out.
Me too Vin-we have a miracle working GOD. Go NEWT.
Why would Mittens want Newt to drop out since the meme pushed by Fishy and crew say Newt is helping Romney by staying in the race?
Well, we see that Myth doesn’t agree.
I stand with Newt. He can beat obama and fix our nation.
This Romney etchasketch BS is spin to attempt to discredit Gingrich.
This is what is really happening. Adelson has been B-slapping Romney via his chief counsel for a while...

RN, with just 2 questions from Juan Williams and King, Newt went from 15 points down in SC, to a 13 point victory. That’s just fact.
We’ve got 5 months to the convention-— it can happen again.
If the next turnaround, takes a miracle— so much the better. -;
Gingrich will have NO PROBLEM retiring his debt. Adelson can wipe it away with pocket change. What a joke.
Fred, I posted that thread about an hour ago— but agree with you completely. The fight’s not over, til Newt says it is.
Victory or death!
IIRC, the limit for individuals is $2,500 or some such. Mr. Adelson’s contributions to the SuperPAC are different.
Me too. Newts my guy. When and where will he be in Pennsylvania?
seriously, I did a search and did not find it, I use the title, I try to never double post, sorry for any double post.
you crack me up. There are so many ways that I do not wish to share here. pocket change..
No worries,Fred. Just letting you know that I agreed with your point-—
Sorry to break it to you, but Newt’s looking for the exit.
Interesting. Evidently Newt “secretly” met with Mitt in Mitt’s hotel room, at Mitt’s invitation.
What they may have said, I don’t know. But why on earth would Mitt want Newt to drop out? Unless Newt comes roaring back again, which he shows no signs of doing, and evidently doesn’t expect to do, since he’s cut his campaign staff, Mitt is better off with Newt staying in the race than if he drops out. Because it helps Mitt split the conservative votes and nail down more votes at the convention.
Newt tends to draw the more libertarian conservatives, who don’t like to hear talk about morality; but if he dropped out, they would still be more likely to vote for Santorum than Rino Romney.
This has been in the works for months. Newt has been for Romney for a long time now. He is even going to support him if Romney is the nominee. Newt is crazy to support this turd. I won’t vote for Romney at all. Rick or Newt is it for me.
Newt is long time CFR. If they feel he’s worthwhile, he’s in. Nothing we do makes a sh!t.
Cicero, have no idea what they discussed. But clearly, Newt’s reaction appears to be- I’m going to Tampa. Thus, it would seem whatever was discussed, did not end in an accord.
He can beat Obama, of that I have no doubt. But "he" won't fix our nation. I like Newt and he is my first choice, but I am still leary of those left hand crazy ivan's he can take every once in a great while. "He" just needs to get Government out of "our" way; we'll do the rest of the heavy lifting on our own.
In other words, I want a President that is going to take up the Republic's business and start breaking down the goliath of a federal government we have today. No more "new" stuff. Tell me about what will be gotten rid of for a change.
Where’s the “oh noes” guy?
:D
I really like Gingrich. Seems still possible, with Palin’s help, Gingrich could shake this up.
Wish it would shake.
Still waiting. And waiting...
if a deal were cut giving newt and even possibly john bolton places in the admin and the understanding they would have leeway on those fronts, matters would be tremendously improved.
Romney is interested in being president, but I don’t think he carries the ideological baggage obama does, not even a remote fraction of it, and even if he did, he doubtless considers himself an american and won’t make job 1 destroying middle class america and supporting enemies abroad, nor reporting to russia on his progress on achieving their objectives.
Warts and all, that is the key difference between Romney and Obama.
Naps, I sincerely believe that newt has a visceral disdain towards Romney. If he were a covert Romney supporter, he would have cut his deal by now. As we can see by Rubio tonight, it’s time to jump on board if one wants leverage and spoils.
I just don’t see the argument that Newt is staying in to hurt Rick..because, imo, Rick has no chance to defeat Romney. I mean rick no offense, but no one can defeat Romney in a primary where he decides to spend $10m or whatever it takes. In other words, Romney doesn’t need Newt’s help in order to defeat Rick.
If the occasion arises, Newt will support him, as Rick will support him— because that’s unfortunately what they do.
No simpering Romney. No hellfire & damnation Santorum.
Only Newt has what it takes- ALL of what it takes, to lead America back where we belong.
Mitt is absolutely clueless on foreign policy. Every bit as much as Herman Cain was and as Obama was before he was elected president. There is simply no way to know what Mitt will do on foreign policy. He’ll be hearing about every issue for the first time. His entire career has shown him to be extremely risk-averse so we can certainly expect him to be a “bomb from the air and jet out of there” guy like Clinton and Obama when it comes to warfare. I’m sure he would never have authorized the Bin Laden raid. He would never in a million years have authorized the Bush surge. If something is unpopular, like Clinton, Romney will put his finger in the wind and follow the breeze. Romney has also shown that he likes to “make deals” at whatever cost. If he’s in a tough position, he is likely to capitulate a lot of ground to the opposing side, as he did with Democrats in Massachusetts. Will China, Russia, or the U.N. get tough messages under a Romney administration? I highly doubt it. His focus would be on keeping things quiet and not creating controversy, which would probably mean giving them a lot of what they ask for, just like Obama does.
