A prominent Douglas County businessman has resigned from the Mercy Foundation board to protest a Catholic organization's stance on gun control.
John Blodgett, vice president of Douglas County Forest Products, submitted his resignation to Mercy Medical Center CEO Kelly Morgan on Thursday.
In an email to Morgan, Blodgett, who has been on the foundation's board of directors for almost five years, said it had come to his attention that Mercy's parent company, Catholic Health Initiatives, supports anti-gun legislation.
I want you to know that I served in the United States Army with the 1st Cavalry in Vietnam and watched my friends die protecting my Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, Blodgett wrote.
Blodgett declined to talk to The News-Review about his resignation.
Mercy Foundation President Lisa Platt said she respected Blodgett's decision.
We're saddened to hear of John's resignation, she said.
As far as the Mercy Foundation is concerned, our mission is to provide services to children who have unmet health care needs, Platt said.
Mercy Foundation and Mercy Medical Center are both affiliated with Catholic Health Initiatives, based in Englewood, Colo.
CHI spokesman Mike Romano said the organization supports sensible gun laws and regulations as part of its commitment to reduce violence.
Romano said the organization's support for gun control is nothing new.
It's a position we've held for many, many years, Romano said. Gun violence reduction has been a priority for this organization since it was created in 1996.
Romano said the organization supports the Second Amendment right to own guns.
None of its current violence-prevention initiatives is gun-related, he said. The organization is focusing on other problems, such as bullying, domestic violence, gang violence and elder abuse, he said.
In Roseburg, CHI gave Mercy Foundation a $153,000 grant to prevent child abuse.
He said the organization has no association with the Brady Campaign or Mayors Against Illegal Guns, both mentioned in Blodgett's resignation letter as organizations supported by CHI.
In his resignation letter, Blodgett said he would spread the word.
Be sure that I will let my employees and friends know my feelings about the direction CHI is headed and recommend they seek other means of medical care, Blodgett said.
He also wrote that his resignation is in no way directed at the people who work for you or the commitment of both the hospital and Mercy Foundation.

Sounds like he fits the government profile of a domestic terrorist.

Thank you for your service Mr. Blodgett, and welcome home.
The key here is to determine just “who” is driving Catholic Health Initiatives, and their support of anti-gun legislation?
We all need to take closer looks at any charity we support!
Liberals believe NYC, Chicago and Washington DC are "sensible".
“He said the organization has no association with the Brady Campaign or Mayors Against Illegal Guns, both mentioned in Blodgett’s resignation letter as organizations supported by CHI.”
Only a probable attempt at “deliberate deception”, arguably worthy of a Muslim practicing at tarquaa and/or kitman.
When an organization becomes a defacto ‘fellow traveller’ of gun grabber organizations, one should be called out as a gun grabber.
Baad Catholic organization.
‘Specially, in light of what Jesus said about self defense and that that certain Commandment said “Don’t murder”, not “Don’t kill”.
Oh, yeah - don’t forget the one about selling one’s robe and buying a sword. But, what would such unenlightened ones know compared with modern hoplophobes?
I suspect three things:
1) He resigned because the organization was about to go hard left in opposition to guns. And,
2) His resignation will not slow them down one whit in both going hard left and lying about it. And,
3) I suspect George Soros and his cronies have successfully infiltrated the Mercy Board Foundation and Catholic Health Initiatives. If they cannot infiltrate and undermine, they set up anti-Catholic, not Catholic managed, “Catholic” organizations like:
Catholic Campaign for Human Development
Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC)
Catholics for a Free Choice
Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good
Catholics United
Other organizations funded by George Soros:
