Three death row inmates in Japan were executed by hanging on Thursday, the country's first executions in more than a year and a half.

The men were reportedly hanged in three different prisons. One was convicted of ramming a car into a train station and then knifing people nearby, killing five, in 1999. The second killed two people in 2001 and the third killed three in 2002.

All executions in Japan are carried by hanging(long-drop). According to the other source, 85.6% of Japanese public support Death penalty, while 5.7% oppose it(research conducted by Japanese cabinet in 2009).

I guess the Japanese don’t have to worry about spot shortages of sodium thiopenthal.

Good for them.

Re. Long-drop hanging:

“If you want to know who we are,
We are gentlemen of Japan:
On many a vase and jar —
On many a screen and fan,
We figure in lively paint:
Our attitude’s queer and quaint —
You’re wrong if you think it ain’t, Oh!...”

(from Gilbert & Sullivan’s Mikado - first performed in 1885)

I’m guessing “long-drop” means broken neck, instant unconsciousness, swift death. Is that right?

Thanks. Not that I give a sh*t. I don’t care if it’s a slow dangle choking and turning blue for long painful minutes.

But since the phrase was used in this thread I just wondered what it meant.

That's the way it's supposed to work, but it can also mean decapitation a la Tom "Black Jack" Ketchum in 1901.

There's also: suspension, short drop which kill by strangulation, and the standard drop (which was used to execute the Nazi war criminals by the US Army)

Japan is a very difficult country to read. In some ways they are very traditional and well ordered, but at the same time they are morally very permissive and the birthplace of many of the avant grade trends among the youth. I think most people would be surprised that Japan hasn’t banned capital punishment.

There is also ‘measured drop’ developed by English hangman Thomas Marwood in the 1800s, which customised the drop according to age, height and build, used in Britain until 1964. Singapore and a couple of other former British colonies still use this method using the old 1911 Home Office league table of drops...

Japan is still largely monocultural and is virtually impervious to political correctness. I don’t think they really give a crap about what the rest of the world thinks when it comes to their own internal affairs...

Yeah. I think that this is the same thing as the long drop, though.

I agree with you.
It’s not well known fact that Japan still has death penalty.

I have read of another method of execution in japan that involved a karate chop to the neck or a judo hold that resulted in a broken neck or something like that. It’s probably not practised any more.

N.B.: Only the states of Washington and New Hampshire presently retain hanging as an option.

A useful reference, the British “Official Table of Drops.”

(Some information is inaccurate, and current tables take into account obesity.)
