TOLEDO, Ohio (WUPW) - Nearly 150 firearms recovered over the past six months in Toledo will soon be melted down at a foundry.
"They vary anywhere from little Derringers all the way to assault rifles," said Toledo police spokesman Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "It's a little collection of things that we've obtained through search warrants, and traffic stops. Some people just have a firearm they don't want anymore. They'll turn it in to us to have it destroyed."
It is a form of magical thinking the places evil into inanimate objects.
There is a movement in a number of legislatures to forbid this sort of willful wasting of resources, to require the auction of these valuable assets.
The major purpose of this sort of destruction seems to be to indoctrinate the public into believing that guns are intrinsicly evil.
The only economic effect of these actions is to increase the demand for new guns. No doubt many gun manufacturers approve.
No wonder local governments are bankrupt (other than their ridiculous union pensions): They destroy valuables!

Many have been indoctrinated by the left to be fearful of firearms. They do not know their rights and the laws governing firearms. They have been indoctrinated out of their rights.
I guess the Toledo Police Department must have lots of tax money in their coffers. Instead of holding an auction and selling these weapons to individuals - they opted to destroy them.
Guns are a tool, they are neither good, nor evil.
Instead of registering these weapons to citizens who are legally entitled to purchase a weapon, and generate funds to pay for various projects, these idiots destroyed something of substancial value. What a bunch of idiots!!

They don’t comment on the inevitability that the collection has been picked over by the members of the Toledo PD and anything good, (Or useful, everyone needs a cold throwdown piece.) will have wound up in the trunks of their cars.

Do you wish to arm convicted Felons?
If you are of legal age, have no convictions - you are free to buy or own a firearm.
If you are a convicted felon; through your actions you have demonstrated that you are not to be trusted, that you have willfully victimized someone else. Therefore, you have served your time, and relinquished some rights that everyone else gets, such as the right to possess firearms and vote.
I see nothing wrong with that.

Yes it does support the premise that guns are evil. More than that, it buttresses the idea that private ownership is evil.
I don’t believe law enforcement should be seen as disapproving of the Second Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.
That is exactly what this law enforcement agency is telegraphing here. They are supposed to be defending rights, and the tenets of the U. S. Constitution.
While I don’t disagree with you in total, consider this.
A young man in his twenties commits a felony, is convicted, serves his sentence, and cleans up his act. In his mid-fifties he determines that it would be a good thing to have some protection in the home.
If he’s kept his nose clean for twenty or thirty years, I’m not against him having his gun rights restored.
I'm inclined to agree - but Federal laws requires some legal actions first:
18 U.S.C. 921(a)(20) provides: "Any conviction which has been expunged, or set aside or for which a person has been pardoned or has had civil rights restored shall not be considered a conviction for purposes of this chapter, unless such pardon, expungement, or restoration of civil rights expressly [or implicitly as a matter of state law] provides that the person may not ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms."
Yes, there are just so many people who don’t want their guns and don’t know what to do with them. Blatant lie.
He said they got their collection from warranted searches and traffic stops. These are weapons they found with people that either had no ability to have one (felon) and said “It’s not mine” or they found it during an arrest and never gave it back.
There are hardly any people that have no idea what to do with a gun “they don’t want”. If you don’t want a gun you don’t have any. If you didn’t but your spouse did and had some, they are handed down to friends and family of the deceased, and you don’t have any left.
