While pundits, politicians and prognosticators have tapped Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as one of the most likely GOP vice presidential picks, conservative commentator Ann Coulter warned today that such a choice would be a mistake.
I think that would be a mistake because the same people who loved Rubio loved [former presidential candidate and Texas Gov.]Rick Perry, Coulter told me Sunday during the This Week roundtable discussion. I want someone whos been a bit more tested.
As the rising star of the Tea Party and a Hispanic from the delegate-rich state of Florida, Rubio would fix Romneys two biggest problems: enthusiasm among the Republican base and lackluster support from Hispanics, argued conservative commentator George Will.
But Coulter, who is a firm Mitt Romney supporter, said the GOP frontrunner needs a running mate who is tried and tested, which, as a first-term Senator, Rubio is not. Coulter suggested Romney pick someone like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie or Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.
Hes been tested, hes steady, hes not frightening, Coulter said of Kyl. He could certainly step into the job.
Van Jones, a former environmental advisor in the Obama White House, threw a brand new name into the realm of vice presidential speculation: former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who served under George W. Bush. She ticks off a lot of boxes as far as women, persons of color, but shes actually tested, shes a national figure and she has foreign policy experience Jones said. You want to do something bold, put Condoleezza Rice on the ticket and watch the Obama campaign go crazy.

She just doesn’t like Rubio because he’s a Conservative.
Coulter suggested Romney pick someone like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
Yeah right Ann. Christie Creme for VP would be just great. A fat loud mouthed RINO Gov from a state the GOP has no shot of winning would be a great pick. This woman is a dope.
Putting Coulter on the air is a mistake. Real fruitloop; closet liberal- and Muslim- lover
Romney is One Big Ass Mistake America.
Christie is more tested than Rubio? Don’t know about that. They have both been through exactly one statewide campaign, Rubio in a bigger state with a bigger population and many more TV markets. I wouldn’t pick Rubio FWIW, but her argument is garbage. Doesn’t really matter because Romney will not be getting my vote either way.
I might buy that if she hadn’t been backing Romney whose “record” is as a liberal.
Condoleeza Rice lost a lot of her luster with me when she commended Obama for making Hillary Sec. of State. Also, she never had a husband or children and that could hurt her in presidential politics. When was last time we had a president who never married? I think we need to go back to James Buchanan.
Correct.
Rubio would over shadow her damn Romney.
Rand Paul, please...or Governor Martinez.
What does this even mean? By her reasoning with regard to Kyl, Perry was just as tested (just not a good debater) having served in state government for almost 2 decades.
As much as VP picks matter (which is not much and Rubio probably isn't going to help the GOP nominee with Latino voters), Rubio is a fine pick. He's conservative and popular with the base of the Republican party. That alone helps Romney, especially after this primary process, and that's something you can't say about Kyl.
Seriously, who wants John Kyl as a VP nominee? Christie is a little better I suppose, but John Kyl? Really?
While I like Rubio a lot, he is NOT natural born.
Somebody better get Coulter a SECOND set of knee pads. She gonna be on her knees for awhile.
Look, to paraphrase Harry Truman who knew some things about politics, if you try to pretend you're a Democrat while you run against another Democrat, the Democrats will chose the real thing every time.
That whole piece is based on the idea Romney runs as a Republican ~ but he can still be stopped, or if not stopped, left without the Conservatives campaigning for him.
Frankly, it would be much easier for a Conservative to run against BOTH Obama and Romney simultaneously.
You'd only need one speech!
Foolish mistakes are never realized until it's too late.
That did sound stange. Maybe she said “Brown Tile” ~ certainly not “John Kyl” ~
You watch. You heard it right here. Ann Coulter will be turning into the next ‘Joe Scarborough’ on some lib network in the not too distant future. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was that gutter network that Joe is on, PMSNBC. The almighty buck is gong to lure that RINO turning wench in no time.
And Christie does?
The republican party is now doing to conservatives what the democrat party has been doing to minorities for decades....taking their vote for granted.
The tile would probably be a better pick.
Based upon her strange behavior for the past six months, I almost wonder if Ann Coulter has gone to work for Obama.
Fixed it.
“...He’s not frigtening...”
Ann’s scared pantsless of Sarah Palin. Ah, the good old country club GOP. Really hoping to totally squash the common man TEA Party for good.
I don’t know that much about Rubio, but Ann is just a troll now.
‘frightening’
I think you just hit the nail on the head.
“Ann Coulter will be turning into the next Joe Scarborough on some lib network in the not too distant future.”
That should surprise nobody, given the course change she’s recently undergone. She’ll possibly try something like that. But I can’t see libs taking to her nor her ratcheting down her erudition to a pop-lib level. So I would estimate that such a “graft” wouldn’t take.
Put a sock in it Annie!
She would like Christie?
Geez, who would have thunk it?
Then we would have 2 f'n RINO's but then again, I'm convinced Coulter has gone over to the dark side.
PS: CAN'T WAIT FOR HER NEXT BOOK TO COME OUT AND SEE HOW MANY HUNDREDS AS OPPOSED TO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS SHE SELLS.
So we're left with a choice, obama or romney?
I see it as we can either double down on stupid (obama) or take a hit (romney)
We're not playing 21 with a $5.00 bet, this is for all the marbles and we got dealt a 16 with the dealer showing 11.
of course its bad.. like oil and water conservative and liberal don’t mix.... She wants fat boy Chrispy Creme..... then the 2 liberals will jell
If RINOmney chose Krispie Cream Christie, that would make both a Presidential and Vice Presidential ticket in which both would lose there home states, because RINOmney isn’t going to win Mass or Mich either one!
Oh now we should follow Van Jones’ advice?
So was he NATURALIZED at the same place as PRESIDENT Chester A. Arthur?
So was he NATURALIZED at the same place as PRESIDENT Chester A. Arthur?
Well I don’t think much of Van Jones, but that’s an interesting point about Condi Rice. It would definitely shake things up.
IMO, I don’t think Christie will ‘play’ well outside the Tri-State area.
She even had her hair done like Peggy Nooner, how cute.
Pray for America
Congressman WEST!
Who cares what RINO Ann thinks.
Governors have more administrative experience than Senators. That's in the nature of the positions. So someone who's been Governor for two years has more experience than someone who's been a Senator for one.
Christie's also older, and in Ann's eyes, his earlier experience as US Attorney probably trumps Rubio's in the State Legislature. Either would probably complement Romney, appealing to groups Romney would have a harder time with.
Kyl, by contrast, comes across as pretty white bread, more like Romney than different. No ethnic appeal.
Hey Annie! Arlen Spector might be free!
Not going into the birther thing...
So it's Romney/Rubio on election night....Obama/Biden...Hillary
You going to not vote for them ...because Rubio parents were born in another country yet he is a citizen born in this country and a current US Senator ?
Please don't clog up the thread with links upon links why birthers are right....in the end it's either them or Obama as POTUS if mittens picks him and he accepts
I won’t go into the facts that Rubio is NOT a NBC based on his parents citizenship at the time of his birth, But I WILL NOT vote for a ticket that has someone on it that is not eligible under the Constitution. Just because the Dems do it is not excuse for the Repubs to also violate the Constitution.
So, if Rubio is on the ticket, I vote for a third party or do not vote for the Presidential ticket.
If she thinks it’s important to select Kyle because he’s “been tested; he’s steady”, then how would she justify selecting Christie. Wasn’t he elected the same year as Rubio?
