Ann Coulter Says Marco Rubio as VP Pick Would Be a ‘Mistake’
ABC News ^ | 04/01/2012 | George Stephanopoulos

Posted on 04/01/2012 12:18:45 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

While pundits, politicians and prognosticators have tapped Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as one of the most likely GOP vice presidential picks, conservative commentator Ann Coulter warned today that such a choice would be a “mistake.”

“I think that would be a mistake because the same people who loved Rubio loved [former presidential candidate and Texas Gov.]Rick Perry,” Coulter told me Sunday during the “This Week” roundtable discussion. “I want someone who’s been a bit more tested.”

As the rising star of the Tea Party and a Hispanic from the delegate-rich state of Florida, Rubio would fix Romney’s two biggest problems: enthusiasm among the Republican base and lackluster support from Hispanics, argued conservative commentator George Will.

But Coulter, who is a firm Mitt Romney supporter, said the GOP frontrunner needs a running mate who is tried and tested, which, as a first-term Senator, Rubio is not. Coulter suggested Romney pick someone like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie or Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

“He’s been tested, he’s steady, he’s not frightening,” Coulter said of Kyl. “He could certainly step into the job.”

Van Jones, a former environmental advisor in the Obama White House, threw a brand new name into the realm of vice presidential speculation: former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who served under George W. Bush. “She ticks off a lot of boxes as far as women, persons of color, but she’s actually tested, she’s a national figure and she has foreign policy experience” Jones said. “You want to do something bold, put Condoleezza Rice on the ticket and watch the Obama campaign go crazy.”

She just doesn’t like Rubio because he’s a Conservative.

She has made an absolute fool of herself over Christie.

Coulter suggested Romney pick someone like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Yeah right Ann. Christie Creme for VP would be just great. A fat loud mouthed RINO Gov from a state the GOP has no shot of winning would be a great pick. This woman is a dope.

that may be, but she is right, he is untested - little relevant experience.

Christie is more tested than Rubio? Don’t know about that. They have both been through exactly one statewide campaign, Rubio in a bigger state with a bigger population and many more TV markets. I wouldn’t pick Rubio FWIW, but her argument is garbage. Doesn’t really matter because Romney will not be getting my vote either way.

I might buy that if she hadn’t been backing Romney whose “record” is as a liberal.

Condoleeza Rice lost a lot of her luster with me when she commended Obama for making Hillary Sec. of State. Also, she never had a husband or children and that could hurt her in presidential politics. When was last time we had a president who never married? I think we need to go back to James Buchanan.

“I think that would be a mistake because the same people who loved Rubio loved [former presidential candidate and Texas Gov.]Rick Perry,” Coulter told me Sunday during the “This Week” roundtable discussion.

What does this even mean? By her reasoning with regard to Kyl, Perry was just as tested (just not a good debater) having served in state government for almost 2 decades.

As much as VP picks matter (which is not much and Rubio probably isn't going to help the GOP nominee with Latino voters), Rubio is a fine pick. He's conservative and popular with the base of the Republican party. That alone helps Romney, especially after this primary process, and that's something you can't say about Kyl.

Seriously, who wants John Kyl as a VP nominee? Christie is a little better I suppose, but John Kyl? Really?

I don't care for him because he's insufficiently Conservative and doesn't have much of a legislative record. The others are insufficiently Conservative or have been corrupted by McCain-esque reach arounds.

Look, to paraphrase Harry Truman who knew some things about politics, if you try to pretend you're a Democrat while you run against another Democrat, the Democrats will chose the real thing every time.

That whole piece is based on the idea Romney runs as a Republican ~ but he can still be stopped, or if not stopped, left without the Conservatives campaigning for him.

Frankly, it would be much easier for a Conservative to run against BOTH Obama and Romney simultaneously.

You'd only need one speech!
