Beginning next school year, students across the country may be in for a shock when they purchase their lunch in the cafeteria.
In an effort to fight childhood obesity and diabetes, the federal government is requiring students of all ages to buy at least one serving of fresh fruit or vegetable for lunch. Even if they toss the produce into the garbage.
Fresh fruit and vegetable portions will double next year. Some students dont take one now, but they will have to, Eileen Faustich, Milfords food services director, said Friday. We cant let a child go by the cashier without a fruit or vegetable on their tray.
Theres more, a lot more, in the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act.
Next year, students can buy only nonfat flavored milk or 1 percent white milk. Half of the grains must be whole next year. In 2013-14, all products must be whole grain. School cafeterias must offer green and orange leafy vegetables, and drastically reduce sodium use over the next three years. Trans-fats are banned.
If a student refuses to take the fruit or vegetable, the cafeteria employees will have to charge an a la carte fee, which typically is higher because the lunch will not be reimbursable under federal guidelines.

Don’t tell me it’s another one of Moo-chelle Obama’s “Let’s MOO” program.
Does the money go to the Congressional Brothels,
ACORN, or just the DNC?
Now, now. You're obviously a neanderthal who doesn't know that true freedom consists only of the right to use the "f-word" and to be homosexual. [/sarcasm]
This is literally the issue of whether the federal government can force a person to buy broccoli.
Unbelievable.
My kids love veggies. They couldn’t possibly serve as many veggies as my kids would be happy to eat. But they will barf onto Michelle Obama’s fat lap anything she tries to shove down their throats against their will.
I really need to talk to my husband about homeschooling. I’ve wanted to do it forever
Wouldnt this be like Obama care where they are requiring you to purchase something?
One of the Supremes while reviewing Obamacare mentioned us being forced to buy brocolli....When wull people stand up...
They demand fruits and vegetables, while the cafeteria still serves the pink slime.
at least have a receptacle for the unwanted fruit to give to the needy instead of throwing it away...
“If a student refuses to take the fruit or vegetable, the cafeteria employees will have to charge an a la carte fee, which typically is higher because the lunch will not be reimbursable under federal guidelines.”
What happens if the kid brings an apple or an orange from home?
And underweight kids will have to buy french fries, pizza, and ice cream, right?
I looked eagerly for the “semi-satire” website link for this post, but alas, there wasn’t one!
Sad to say, I live in Milford and am compelled to pay for this madness.
Wonder how brown baggers are affected?
He'll be double-fined for failing to contribute to government coffers.
Ping (and puke!)
at least have a receptacle for the unwanted fruit to give to the needy instead of throwing it away...
************************************************
Pig farmers will be lining up to place scrap containers in the schools... free haul away!
When this was being passed into law, did anyone stand up in Congress (or outside, for that matter) and say that this is not the govt’s business?
The obligatory menu. It starts in public school, but it won’t end there.
We homeschool. Our sons get to eat whatever, whenever. It’s great.
We’ll walk with you through the beginning if you want to home educate your children. :)
Another Reason to Home School (while paying for the public schools’ waste)
Why not require jogging?
It’s healthy and would lower medical costs, right?
You know what? The Left is VERRRRY comfortable with use of force —extravagantly so.
Which US political party send a whole ethnic group to PRISON as a matter of policy...?
Milford teachers look like a herd of fat cows. Better if their lunches were monitored.
The food is FREE! Now the commies can tell you what to eat that’s FREE.
I suspect some kids will do what I did when I had had enough of the cafeteria swill in high school - sneak off campus and hit a fast food joint or local quick eatery. My senior year I used to hit this little Cantonese place at least twice a week for the lunch buffet.
Never on a Friday, though. On Fridays we’d usually hang out in my buddy’s van and split a six-pack of Mickey’s widemouths. Made study hall a heck of lot more fun, I tell ya. :-)
Control-freak “liberals” hate freedom.
Why don’t you start decorating lampposts with these cretins?
works for me... anything but throwing them in the garbage
Homeschool if at all possible. Go to Amazon and purchase Charlotte Iserbyt ‘s book, The DELIBERATE DUMBING DOWN OF AMERICA, to fully understand WHY... Her new updated edition is great. Share it with school committees and legislators and other concerned parents.
Parents, please take back your children from the STATE..
Who profits? This is not about student health, it’s about money. Who get rich from this?
Forget taxes. The left has decided to force you to spend your own money on things they want.
Woohoo... individual mandate... Romney loves it too
How is this any different from the government
forcing you to buy insurance?
Answer, it’s not.
The kids get used to it and then don’t think any
thing of it as adults.
We are being played.
This has nothing to do with health anyway. Veggies in schools are usually boiled to death and all traces of vitamins are gone. The fruit is canned in heavy syrup for increased sugar and carbs. This is beyond stupid and what’s worse is, most parents will agree and say, “I’m glad because you never eat enough veggies”etc.
individual mandate again
don’t need taxes
we’ll just write your shopping list in DC
In the 1960’s in grade school in Mesa, AZ (before the Feds took over completely) a teacher used to inspect our trays at the exit door. If our veggies were still there, the teacher would send us back to a table until we ate them.
We just stuff the veggies into our milk carton.
ping for arth
I think somebody should tell Scalia.
SCALIA: Could you define the market everybody has to buy food sooner or later, so you define the market as food, therefore, everybody is in the market; therefore, you can make people buy broccoli.
VERRILLI: No, that’s quite different. That’s quite different. The food market, while it shares that trait that everybody’s in it, it is not a market in which your participation is often unpredictable and often involuntary. It is not a market in which you often don’t know before you go in what you need, and it is not a market in which, if you go in and and seek to obtain a product or service, you will get it even if you can’t pay for it.
If there is any way you can homeschool your kids ... do it!
If you are made to jog, you will be required to move through "bad areas" where you will be the regular target for robbery and beatings by Holder's people.
“This is literally the issue of whether the federal government can force a person to buy broccoli.”
A good example of how upholding Obamacare would be applied. People might have laughed at this “example” a while back, but nothing’s funny anymore with this bunch of dictators.
Local schools boards need not attempt to state their preference...Kathleen Sebellius and Moochelle will make the big decision on everyone's behalf.
Perhaps you mean the home-fed? They will be treated as the other nonconformists, the home-schoolers. They'll need a licence and a culinary degree before they can fix their child food.
Welcome to the future. The government no longer needs taxes, it has the mandate. Soon they will mandate you join a gym, buy broccoli, birth control or whatever, maybe even dictate your shopping lists.
Welcome to the Brave New World.
Local schools boards need not attempt to state their preference...Kathleen Sebellius and Moochelle will make the big decision on everyone's behalf.

Passed unanimously in the Senate, 264-157 in the House.
So yes, your rino Senator voted for it.
Typical liberals - they identify a problem and come up with the wrong solution - to fit with their agenda!!
Children will pitch food they hate. Children need safe neighborhoods to play outside after school!! Boys need to run around and create sand lot games ad infinitum from dusk to dawn.
Safe neighborhood will occur when a father is married to the mother of his children and cares.
The democratic social justice plantation is the root of this problem.
The vegetables will create stinky garbage - more work for the garbage union.
Those lunch boxes and paper sacks will either be banned or inspected.
And how many local whole or 2% milk distributors will be put out of business because of this DC sanctimony?
I meant dawn to dusk - then family dinner.
The helter skelter disconnect that is being proposed by the democrats and perpetrated by the republicans needs to go.
We need a razor mind to cut through the crap - Breitbart - RIP -Newt we needed you.
Boycott the gubmint skules. Find a good, Catholic school and run to them.
That is next. Think of all the jobs BO will "create"....I figure one person will only be able to force-feed about 3-5 kids per lunchtime.....this will solve unemployment, I tell you!
