Lessons from the Fall of RomneyCare

When then-Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney signed into law the nation’s most far-reaching state health care reform proposal, it was widely expected to be a centerpiece of his presidential campaign. In fact Governor Romney bragged that he would "steal" the traditionally Democratic issue of health care. "Issues which have long been the province of the Democratic Party to claim as their own will increasingly move to the Republican side of the aisle," he told Bloomberg News Service shortly after signing the bill. He told other reporters that the biggest difference between his health care plan and Hillary Clinton’s was "mine got passed and hers didn’t." more...

The issue isn't Romney, but ideas. From the Cato article:

Although it has received less media attention than other aspects of the bill, one of the most significant features of the legislation is the creation of the Massachusetts Health Care Connector to combine the current small-group and individual markets under a single unified set of regulations. Supporters such as Robert E. Moffit and Nina Owcharenko of the Heritage Foundation consider the Connector to be the single most important change made by the legislation, calling it "the cornerstone of the new plan" and "a major innovation and a model for other states."

So the "brain trust" at the "conservative" Heritage Foundation, the one Rush always mentions, thought Romneycare was the solution. Now we know better.

The danger is bad ideas. Romney's going to be the nominee. All the wailing and gnashing of teeth in the world isn't going to change that. As conservatives we have a grand opportunity, but time is fleeting. Romney's desperate to solidify the nomination. Now's the time to put our people in tight and close to him. No POTUS runs the country. It is those advisers and staff that do so.

Our focus should and must be controlling the agenda of ideas out there. There are a few key areas that need attention and control - rebinding the Commerce Clause (Lochner, Wickard v. Filburn, etc.); reeling in the regulatory agencies and restoring Congressional oversight; and insuring state's rights are enforced per the US Constitution.

Federal overreach is the issue across the board. The solution is wringing concessions out of Romney right now while he's most amenable to them and the most desperate. Judicial appointments are critical. Get those concessions now in exchange for our support. With a strong Congress and Romney's desperate need to shed Obamacare's shadow he's stepped right into our playground - it's a state issue. That's an opportunity and a grand one.

He's placed himself in a corner. If Obamacare is a state's rights issue, what else is too? Santorum and Gingrich are out. Palin absolutely will not run. There will not be a brokered convention. We need to start moving this country back to its Founding roots. Doing that now with Romney makes the most sense. Flailing at him until he secures the nomination is a losing proposition for those things we care most about.

We are not talking about the GOP, we are talking about the "perverse" enjoyment you are going to take in an Obama victory. I don't understand why you are blaming the Republican Party for Romney's possible nomination. Millions of voters have gone to the polls to make that decision. And no one was excluded from running or voting.

You must plow the fields with the oxen God gave you. Anbody but Obama should be the objective once the nominee is selected. The reality is that it is the GOP's race to lose. Obama has a record to run on now. No more hope and change.

Embrace your PRO HOMO, PRO ABORTION, anti traditional marriage, high unemployment Gov, anti-gun appointment of liberal judges Big Gov't socialistic healthcare candidate ALL YOU WANT. Mitt's an imposter - he belongs to the 'rat party and satan pawns paved the way that - one way or another - satan will sit in our WH - to bring the ultimate destruction on America. But NOT on my vote.

I WILL never taint myself with voting for EVIL by putting satan's pawn in the WP. It's just not happening. YOU NEED to get it over by the way "I" choose to vote - not everyone is in the gutter. God's OWN cannot be manipulated - so don't try it. For God will NOT be mocked, what you sow, you reap, more than you sow, later than you sow. And that's for ALL the manipulation by the GOP over the years - and MITT - their 'later' will soon be upon them. Hint: In the end, they don't win - only for a short time and then comes destruction - God's wrath.

Now I believe I made myself very clear - even for the clueless and naive - so I trust you will 'get it'.

The POS 'grassroots' have been given deals and bought off!! Not rocket science for those with a brain cell.
