Wrong house raided during drug search; police admit mistake
Post Standard Syracuse NY ^ | 3/28/12

Posted on 04/01/2012 5:32:48 PM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

Fred Skinner, 76, of Victory, was caught off-guard on Tuesday when police officers broke through his front door during a drug raid, only to find out they had the wrong house

Skinner said at least six police officers broke into his house, smashed through his porch door, and then his front door. The house at on McNeely Road was raided for drugs for over five minutes before police realized they had the wrong house by looking through his mail. After the police realized it was the wrong house, they took the handcuffs off him and left.

Auburn police officers were involved in the raid conducted by the Finger Lakes Drug Task Force. Auburn Police Chief Gary Giannotta admitted the mistake and told WSYR that he only remembers police raiding a wrong house four times in the last 16 years.

Well, that was nice of them.

Four times too many. They’re slack a** hacks who need to be replaced so they can find a new line of work to which they are better suited. Garbageman comes to mind as appropriate.

Too many are badly hurt due to this sort of event for “only four times in sixteen years” to be an acceptable answer.

SWAT Teams should just go to the house next to the address they have. They will have as much chance of hitting the right house.

Imagine if surgeons worked like this. They would pick a random hospital visitor and do a bypass or a hysterectomy. What kind of excuse would work?

That’s what you get if you arm a paramilitary group and tell them they are in a war on drugs.

There is a major national effort to end “wrong site surgery” either the wrong side is operated on, or the wrong level (of a spinal surgical procedure) . Hospitals are threatened with losing Medicare payments, etc, etc.

Perhaps we need a national initiative for “wrong address SWAT searches”.

BTW, how hard is it to check an address before you kick the door down?

“Or maybe it’s a case of stupid people with guns trying to do Police work.Could be time for IQ testing of cops.”

How much truth can you tolerate?

The dirty fact is that cops are IQ tested. Above a certain point, they are not hired.

Why? The officer is basically a blunt force tool and is supposed to enforce by the book. Too much IQ and they begin to use judgement.

Can’t have a thinking cop, can we?

After the press picked up the story the cops did end up paying $1200 to fix the door. Of course, if any civilian did this it would be felony criminal mischief.

“only four times in sixteen years”

So that is something to bragg about...a serial killer can bragg about only killing four people in sixteen years, he can claim he is not as bad as some other serial killers.

How in hell does this happen? I mean, really. These bad boy’z with all their bad boy toy’z muck up the intel like this.

What if the old man would have had a heart attack or heaven forbid was so confused he failed to follow their orders and got himself shot? Would the cops just express how sorry they are?

This should never happen....ever.

Good point. And can you imagine going into surgery and the surgeon says: "Relax. I only remember performing the wrong operation on somebody four times in the last 16 years. So just stay calm. I'll probably get it right."

The 4 times in 16 years doesn’t sound too bad, unless I’m one of those 4. I’d like to know how many raids they’ve done over those 16 years.

I can’t imagine Syracuse has too many of em. If they do one a month then they have an error rate of 2%. Pretty high when lives are at stake. Of course they might do more than that, or less.

Unless it is considered racially discriminatory, I would suggest “reading and writing” tests for at least the 5th grade level for all police officers in NY.

And that’s four times in the last 16 years for this ONE police department.

Multiply it by the thousands of police and sheriff’s departments across the country, and you get this sad fact....the War on Drugs has evolved into a war against the privacy, dignity, freedom and even safety of the American people.

The worst thing is how it degrades public trust. There's nothing wrong with SWAT teams, if they're used as needed. For hostage situations, for example (which is how they were sold to the public). Even then, however, they shouldn't be used in lieu of trying to talk someone down. Now they're used for everything, and every police force has their own team, funded by federal dollars and what they can seize.

SWAT teams are like guns, or fire - they have to be considered special tools for special things. When you need them, you REALLY need them. And when you don't, you REALLY don't. A society advances to the degree it can properly use it's growing power. When the power outgrows the proper use of it, it ends up devouring the very society it purports to be serving.
