Google's new car allows blind to get behind wheel

Web giant Google has already changed the way we search the internet, watch video and navigate. But the firm's latest breakthrough could be its biggest innovation yet, reports the Daily Mail.

The company promises that its self-driving car will enable blind people to drive, as the vehicle takes over nearly all the functions of the car currently controlled by humans.

The project has been several years in the making, and was officially unveiled in October 2010.

But recently it has taken a further step forward, after putting blind people in the driving seat and inviting them to test the technology that could revolutionise their lives.

Google has released a video showing Steve Mahan, dubbed 'Self-Driving Car User #0000000001', using the car to carry out his daily routine.

I think all cars produced after the 2013 model year should be “blind driver friendly”*.

*Just trying to beat the liberals to the punch. ;-)

In the early 90’s I recorded a show on PBS that showed a car that drove itself. They used stop motion photography to show it’s progress. I believe it went something like ten yards by going a few inches, calculating what was in front of it, and going another few inches. I believe it took it most of the day to go that distance.

If true, imagine where this will be in ten years. Or sooner, at the rate change keeps accelerating.

Now you're talkin'. FUR SHUR no more DUI.

Some things are obvious. Sweden, for example, is abolishing currency. They expect that will eliminate bank robberies and folks knocking over the till in stores.

While continuing to go blind slowly, I look forward to this technology.

Too late Google

Judging from some of the drivers I encounter around here they're already on the roads...they may not be legally blind since they seem to be able to read their text messages.
