Posted on 04/02/2012 2:31:40 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet
Right before our eyes, American conservatism is becoming something very different from what it once was. Yet this transformation is happening by stealth because moderates are too afraid to acknowledge what all their senses tell them.
Last weeks Supreme Court oral arguments on health care were the most dramatic example of how radical tea partyism has displaced mainstream conservative thinking. Its not just that the laws individual mandate was, until very recently, a conservative idea. Even conservative legal analysts were insisting it was impossible to imagine the court declaring the health-care mandate unconstitutional, given its past decisions.
So imagine the shock when conservative justices repeatedly spouted views closely resembling the tweets and talking points issued by organizations of the sort funded by the Koch brothers. Dont take it from me. Charles Fried, solicitor general for Ronald Reagan, told The Washington Posts Ezra Klein that it was absurd for conservatives to pretend that the mandate created a market in health care. The whole thing is just a canard thats been invented by the tea party . . ., Fried said, and I was astonished to hear it coming out of the mouths of the people on that bench.
Staunchly conservative circuit judges Jeffrey Sutton and Laurence Silberman must have been equally astonished, since both argued that overturning the law would amount to judicial overreach. Yet moderate opinion bends over backward to act as if this is an intellectually close question...

Extra large barf bag required...
government not being able to tell people how to spend their own money is somehow a right wing coup??
So if we don’t give government new dictatorial powers we are somehow moving far radical right??
Crack pipe journalism.
I don’t even know where to begin with this blithering idiot. I wonder who has to remind him to breathe.
Commies latch on to any dissenting opinions on the right to exploit.
ObamaCare is a 2700 page communist coup. America gets it.
This guy is writing for the brie-and-Chablis circuit. He's not going to convince anyone else.
!! Conservative idea !!??
The antithesis of Conservatism!
"insisting"? "impossible to imagine"? Give us one name.
Apparently, Kagan texted the results of Friday’s secret SCOTUS vote on ObamaCare and he is talking tough because he knows they have decided it is UN-Constitutional!
Now, he is trying to save the rest of the package from the Mandate!?!?!?
Now they make up straw man arguements so they can show how smart they are in knocking them down.
These frigging nitwits think it is a done deal. I don’t think they will kill it, Kennedy will cave and Breyer is a senile moron will cave.
Charles Fried, solicitor general for Ronald Reagan (who is also and Obama voter\supporter) How the heck did that happen?
They tell us about themselves, by what they accuse us of. They accuse us of a ‘stealth coup’. A coup is exactly what they have been executing. A socialist stealth coup.
The left media will continue to proclaim that the individual mandate was a “conservative idea” because it puts the guilt on their opposition. This is very important to the socialist revolutionary cause. The same way that it is important for leftist socialists to force YOU to pay for their crap, NPR, PBS, food stamps, Planned Parenthood etc etc. It makes you guilty too.
There... fixed it....
The WaPo comments section on this article is populated largely by the mentally ill. These people are deeply disturbed, yet strangely arrogant and smug about it. It’s as if they’ve all contracted a horribly disfiguring disease, but when they look in the mirror, they all say, “Yeah, bit looks good on ME.”
Was this idiot ever issued a brain? I don’t think he has ever had one from day one.
Let me correct you on at least one point,
you have not seen “radical Tea Partyism” yet.
Believe me, you will know it when it happens.
Have a Koch and a smile!
Your edit to the title is on-target.
This piece is riddled with breathless panic.
"Conservative tea party" thinking generally can be described as that thinking which believes in Creator-endowed individual life, liberty, rights, and laws to protect those rights (as stated in the Declaration of Independence) and a "We, the People's" written Constitution which structured and severely limits government's coercive power over its "only KEEPERS" (Justice Story), "the People." That kind of "thinking" believes that America's future for children would be better if we rediscover and preserve the "radical" ideas of 1776 and 1787.
Perhaps Dionne doesn't fully appreciate the great gift of liberty those "radicals" of 1776 and 1787 provided for him. Or, perhaps, he just hasn't bothered to study their ideas at all.
[ “radical tea partyism “ ]
LoL... is this guy kidding or what?..
Talk about being bunched up in Obama shorts..
You want read about radicals “Rule for Radicals”(Alinsky) is the place..
You know “Saul Alinsky” the mentor of Obama and more than half the White Hut..
Go back to licking frozen railroad tracks, E.J.
At least you’re halfway competent at that.
You forgot to add the prefix “Left-Wing Lunatic” to E.J. Dionne, Jr.
Exactly. If all they wanted to do was extend insurance to the uninsured, which is what Medicaid is supposed to do, all they had to do was extend Medicaid. That would have taken a page or two, or five maybe. What are the other 2695 pages doing?
And people do get, I think, that those 2700 pages were not written by congress, and they weren't read by anyone in congress. Which means congress itself was usurped, which again means the "law" is illegitimate.
The government’s lead lawyer, in his summing up, tried to “turn up the violins” with reference after reference to “the blessings of liberty.”
Paul Clement, the masterful lead lawyer for the challengers, responded (paraphrasing) that it is a curious conception of liberty held by the law’s proponents: A law that forces you to do things you don’t want to do is pro-liberty?
Good one. What a waist of bandwidth to put this up.
I’ll agree after reading
that he is an enthusiastic supporter of Obamacare, but I’m not seeing him saying anything close to “impossible to imagine” (that it would be considered unconstitutional). One can say “that’s how it is, end of story”, as he does, but that still doesn’t rise to a statement of utter inviolate truth that Dionne here claims to exist.
To be clear, by beef is with Dionne’s almost certainly misleading statement that there are clear conservative statements that Obama is not just clearly Constitutional, but so clearly Constitutional that it’s simply “impossible to imagine”, that anyone, pondering any combination of (for example) history, law, public opinion, and commerce, would not agree.
This screed of denial takes your breath away.
Yeah : )
Is this E.J. evil? Just stupid? Every time I read his dreck, I can’t decide.
DID HE GET A LEAK?
OBAMA TAKES SHOT AT COURT
Does a bear take a leak in the woods?
DID HE GET A LEAK?
OBAMA TAKES SHOT AT COURT
my apologies for double posting ....things is glitzy
If so, the leaker was most likely Kagan.
Is that something like changing Congressional rules so that you can ram through a piece of unpopular legislation without a single vote from the other party?
For someone who makes a conscious decision to call himself a “progressive”, E. J. certainly seems afraid of change.
Liberals on the other hand can NOT do the same with us. We answer questions - then they fill out the same form trying to answer AS IF they were conservatives. They can't do it. They have no idea how we think. And this intensely stupid piece by E.J. Dionne Jr. proves that point. I would be embarrassed for the guy - but he's probably incapable of shame.
Largely a given with E.J. Dionne in the byline.
No wonder nobody buys the WaPo anymore. Fiction is even more believable than this garbage.
Radical Tea-party thinking - “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
Yep, those radical right wingers trying to change the moderate foundation of our nations.
E.J. Dijon. Like Dijon Biden, another Democrat that’s never held a real job.
Coup? As in the illegal persecution of Ted Stevens which
became the 60th vote, that gave us this monstrosity?
This article was really intended to be published a day earlier, right?
E.J. Dionne is of the brie-and-chablis circuit, writing for the brie-and-chablis circuit and all his thinking is by the brie-and-chablis circuit.
Dionne is the quintessential Washington "insider" -- he doesn't know anybody who isn't.
What Dionne is writing is what Washington is thinking. And, thus, revealing of just how out of touch his entire circle is. Despite their pretense toward intelligence...
