Mitt Romney will begin raising money jointly with the Republican National Committee, as the GOP front-runner's campaign moves its focus from a protracted primary fight to the general election.
The arrangement between the RNC and Romney camp would allow donors to contribute as much as $75,000 per person, according to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the story.
The move reflects growing concern that the party's presumptive nominee must begin looking ahead to a November match-up with President Obama, whose team has assembled a fundraising juggernaut.
The Obama campaign raised $45 million in February, the most recent month for which data is available, and has hauled in just under $300 million for the election cycle. Romney, by comparison, raised $11.5 million in February.
Obamas campaign has already launched joint fundraising efforts with the Democratic National Committee.
Romney has proved to be a fundraising powerhouse as well, but his campaign has been spending at a high clip, warding off challenges from a once-crowded GOP presidential field.
The RNC invited Romney's rivals, former Sen. Rick Santorum (Pa.) and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) to also participate in united fundraising efforts, but both candidates declined, reports the Journal.
While Romney is short of the 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the nomination, in recent weeks he has gained key endorsements from GOP heavyweights hoping to avoid a continued primary fight or brokered convention.
Looks like we're all just supposed to accept the "inevitability" of the Romney nomination, doesn't it?
They will “jointly” raise $0 from me.
Well for Petes sake, why bother with primaries anymore? The GOP just chooses the candidate and hangs the voters out to dry. They decided to just cancel the contest midstream. How do they figure this is supposed to help get people to vote for the down ticket candidates ?
I can’t believe they are this stupid...well, maybe I can.
Karl Rove et al in the GOPe are just wetting their pants so much that they aren’t even going to wait for the Primary to conclude to anoint Milt our nominee. Between all the crooked vote counts and this jumping the gun BS, the GOPe just should go back to the smokey back room decisions prior to the binding Primaries and skip the charade of running clean elections to get the candidate the base wants.
Looks like the elitist GOP gets to dictate to us all over again. Might as well be McCain 2008 all over again. Democrats absolutely suck but the Repubs are just lickers lite. What a conundrum-—scrooge politics my faith is in The Almighty.
If you would like to be on my low volume ping list, please FReepmail me.
The RNC has been backing him for a year or more in all reality.
However, since there is NO issue where Romney is a conservative, I can never vote for him.
The first RNC call I get asking me to support Myth will be the last. I guarantee it.
More confirmation that the fix has been in for a long time. They will get exactly $0 from me and my family.
So will Santorum, Gingrich, Paul, etc. get money too?
This is favoritism if it is just for Romney.
I received two fund raising calls yesterday, and didn’t answer either one. I bet that I missed another on my cell phone, this morning .
They were asked if they would like to participate, but they declined. I think the party is really going to have to rely on the wealthy donors this year. They drew this out. My guess is now Romney has probably tapped out his donors because he was so inefficient, and some of the money that would have gone to the party has now gone to candidates fighting Romney. In other words some of the big money and a lot of the little money has already been burned, and they never expected this to happen before their pick cleared the bar.
I donated $9.99 to Cain and that is all I have or will donate to anyone this cycle. I am done with the GOP until the organization gets shaknen up to its core because the core is rotten.
