President Obama introducing special TV broadcast of 'To Kill A Mockingbird'
EW ^ | April 3, 2012 | by Adam B. Vary

There are few films that stir the heart and soul more than the 1962 classic To Kill A Mockingbird. To commemorate the Oscar-winning film’s 50th anniversary, President Barack Obama will introduce a special broadcast of a restored and digitally remastered print of the film on USA at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Saturday, April 7. Starring Gregory Peck as the heroically decent Alabama lawyer Atticus Finch, and based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning novel by Harper Lee, the film will air with limited commercial interruption. In a rare public statement, Lee said she was “deeply honored” that President Obama would be participating in celebrating the film. “I believe it remains the best translation of a book to film ever made,” she said, “and I’m proud to know that Gregory Peck’s portrayal of Atticus Finch lives on — in a world that needs him now more than ever.”

Because, here in 2012, with black racism utterly dominant, we just HAVE to highlight a dramatization of an incident of white racism from the early 20th century.

It is just so essentially necessary and important.

I love the movie, however it portrays a black man who dies because he is unjustly accused of raping the white woman who tried to seduce him. I really have to wonder is that the best choice for President Obama. At the very least he is not a post racial president, far from it.

Big mistake on his part, I suspect. These days, when I think about “To Kill a Mockingbird” the first names that come to mind are Tawana Brawley and Crysal Gail Mangum.

I love this book and I read it with my 11th grade American literature students every year. I'm sure they will be talking about this and I will have to address the situation diplomatically. Every time I read the book I am more convinced that it is a very conservative novel. Harper Lee mocks John Dewey's public school overhaul and Atticus Finch does not get angry at what today would be considered hate speech.

Is this Romania, North Korea, Zimbabwe or the Soviet Union where every aspect of our lives has to do with Dear Leader and Our Great Mother? Everything like this is just another step closer to the inevitable civil war that’ll make the 1860’s look like a Sunday School recital.

The guy is everywhere. Two years ago, a friend and I toured Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. Part of the tour includes a film on the life of Jefferson and a portion of the film dealt with his views on slavery and his treatment of his own slaves. Wouldn’t you know Obama appears in that film? My traveling companion, a diehard Obama supporter, was thrilled. I wanted to hurl.

I have never read the book or seen the film (and my children won’t either); we live next to Newark NJ, and understand the present in stark terms that make the past a far-off fairy-tale. I wasn’t even born when this was made; I feel no “white guilt”. Instead, I live in a town where a lot of current residents fled Newark decades ago because of what was unleashed there; we have no misconceptions about it.

Are ya’ll gettin’ the message yet?

I remember the 1960s. To kill a mockingbird? Is that where he is pulled out of the car and beat to death? We called 'em Long Hot Summers. Obama is commemorating that?

It's not even summer and he's got it going already.

WHY IS HE DOING THIS?

In the book, Tom Robinson is accused of a rape he DID NOT COMMIT. Yet all the town wants to convict him to keep “those people” in their “proper place”.

EVERYTHING in TKAM makes the new Tom Robinson into ZIMMERMAN.

ZIMMERMAN is cracked up to be this horrrible guy, in spite of ALLLLL the evidence, much of which they have conspired to cover.

WHY IS HE DOING THIS....?

It is increasingly difficult to know when a headline is being satirical and when we are supposed to read it with a straight face. Great Leader is playing with fire in order to be reelected. The hope he has is to incite and divide in ways this country has not seen in decades. I fear we have seen nothing yet.

When Dear Leader appears there will be a triple rainbow, a herd of prancing Unicorns showering His children with Skillets and a flock of birds singing in human voices.
Dear Leader will emerge from a giant clam shell, garbed in purple robes and a laurel crown and surrounded by Doric columns to introduce the broadcast in his magnificent baritone.
Comrade: Thought crime does not entail death. Thought crime is death. Death to the reactionary running jackals and braying hyenas. Let a million flowers bloom. Long life to Dear Leader!

Thank you! I posted on this thread earlier that TKAM is actually very conservative, one just has to read it more than once to really see Lee’s innuendo. I was telling my class yesterday, when one of the students brought up the Martin/Zimmerman issue, that the case greatly resembles what is happening in TKAM (we are at the part where Mayella is testifying and realizes her and her father’s huge mistake in their lie). We discussed the “lynching” that Zimmerman is experiencing, and that even if he is guilty of murder that he deserves the right to a trial by jury of his peers. My students, 50% black 50% white, have a better grasp of this tragedy than most of the media elites.

All my sisters homeschool, they don’t show their children this kind of stuff either, made during the beiginning of Hollywood’s self-righteous smug era of “message” pictures, espeically those instilling “white guilt”. My sisters and their husbands say they refuse to raise their families to feel guilt for things they weren’t even alive for. No other nation is forced to accept “collective guilt” in this way, the sad thing is, being the altruistic people we are, we’re also the ones who fixed the problems, even at the risk of life! That doesn’t get harped on. But anyway, there will be one family at
least who’s not been indoctrinated into internalising “white guilt”.

“It’s a shame that you punish your students with such pap, but then again, I do have a Y chromosome.”

Harper Lee greatly abuses, and for good reason, John Dewey and his Progressive education reforms. She also makes a profound statement about God given rights, especially the right to free speech. For example, Atticus Finch never bats an eye when somebody calls him a n***** lover. He never even suggests that those who call him such names are wrong or should be punished for what today is a hate crime. The teacher who describes the U.S. as a democracy is shown to be incompetent. I could go on but I have to put my kids to bed. I suggest you read and reread this novel. You will be quite surprised about how conservative it actually is; however, the movie unfortunately has an agenda.

One more thing while the bath water is running: Harper Lee shows quite disgust for welfare. Scout questions her father on why Bob Ewell is allowed to hunt out of season and the reason is because he drinks his relief check. The community doesn't want to see his kids hungry. Later that day Jem mimicked a trend of the time by trying to stay in his tree house all day. Scout did everything for him including bringing him food. She was worried that he'd get too hungry or thirsty without her providing for him. Atticus tells her that when his supply line is cut off, Jem will come down from the tree house. As I mentioned in a previous post, Lee's innuendos are difficult to catch the first few times through the novel. You must read it several times before you are capable of seeing what she has incredibly crafted.

Thank you! Harper Lee’s book is a deeply layered and richly textured novel. Those that give it a superficial reading or dismiss it out of hand without ever having read it or only having seen the movie version are missing out. Much like some do with Margaret Mitchell’s GWTW.

Atticus tells her that when his supply line is cut off, Jem will come down from the tree house. As I mentioned in a previous post, Lee's innuendos are difficult to catch the first few times through the novel. Exactly. Atticus was a good man and a good father with a strong sense of right and wrong, not afraid to stand up for true justice and to stand up against injustice.

I won’t watch the broadcast on USA with Obama doing the intro. I will instead reread the Harper Lee novel.

There was also the respect that Atticus showed to Mrs. Dubose for her desire to die beholden to nobody or nothing. Conservative? Yes! The Ewells had the same opportunity as anybody to get an education (much like our “underprivileged” minorities) but refused that opportunity and chose to live like trash (much like our “underprivileged” minorities), yet blamed all of their problems on everybody else (much like our “underprivileged” minorities).

As an increasing number of people mature in an age where Jim Crow is something that pre-dates their grandparents, and all they’ve seen is jobs, college seats, etc. given to less-qualified blacks, I assure you there are a HUGE number of people that will never experience “white guilt”. Because the internet provides access to countless unreported stories that don’t fit the race hustlers’ agenda, much of that “guilt” has already been replaced by “white indifference” or outright “white frustration” (the latter being the white liberal response, which manifests itself in fighting tooth & nail to provide abortion free of charge to any black women seeking it).

The importing of Hispanics to displace them in every facet of American life has shown how far “white guilt” has deteriorated.

Your post #47.

I won't watch the broadcast on USA with Obama doing the intro. I will instead reread the Harper Lee novel.

My spouse had the film playing on the television and I writhed and finally took off. I have not read the book and will go down to the local library and see if they have it. I pride myself on giving it a fair evaluation. This is only fair.

I noted the novelist is still with us at 85 years of age. An explanation follows, as to why she is reluctant to get in on any public approbation, of her book.

I do bear in mind that the novel is fiction. I do not see any claim, that an actual case closely resembled this story.

White guilt and more white guilt does follow. Imho.
