Woodbridge, Conn. (WTNH) -- The idea in itself is simple: allow one unit at Woodbridge's Selden Plaza to be zoned for retail. However, some in the quiet town are taking issue with Frank Kloss' plan to sell guns.
"It's very frightening to think that this may happen in our community," said long-time resident Tina Brogadir.
Brogadir would rather the Planning and Zoning Commission deny the use, even if it means a loss of tax revenue.
"I don't care, not that way," she said. "No thank you!"
Kloss, who is a retired Hamden police officer, along with co-owner Michael Majewski, asked the PZC Monday night to chance the use of the site, which right now doesn't allow retail sales. Kloss explained to the commission there would be 16 cameras on the property, a state-of-the-art alarm system, roof sensors, not to mention heavy regulation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
"A lot of stringent guidelines set up by the federal government that we have to adhere to, along with the state," Kloss said before the commission Monday evening.
Before the meeting began, there was a small protest outside of Memorial Hall.
"There are a number of gun stores in the area that are quite accessible, they are not in areas that are in high traffic with people on foot," said resident Suzanne Rosenberg.
News 8 asked Brogadir about her viewpoint of this debate in relation to the Second Amendment.
"Come on, that was colonial times, people don't need to bear arms in that way," Brogadir said.
"Not to be argumentative," said News 8's Jamie Muro, "but it's still the law of the land that you are allowed to legally purchase a firearm in this community."
"That may be, but we do not want a gun store in our community," Brogadir said.
No vote was taken Monday, the issue will be brought up again during the May meeting.

I cannot fathom why, beyond history or tradition, the major gun manufacturers remain in places like CT and MA when basic gun rights are clearly not valued in the community.
If the town folk don’t like the idea of a gun shop then all they have to do is not patronize it and the lack of business will force the owners of said shop to close it’s doors. Geez simple economics.

A group of patriots in that town should band together to start a civil class action suit against the town for violating their second ammendment rights.
Name in the suit each person who votes against the gun shop.
Even if the town’s employees are told they have immunity from civil action, they will have to hire lawyers to protect themselves, as police do in such cases.
Shoot them in the wallet.

Blithering idiots. If they had any sense, they’d welcome the kind of patrons that shop at gun stores into their community.
I’ve often thought the same thing, but many of the older ones have been there since a time before demographic changes brought folks into New England who are less enabored by the industry and/or tradition. Incidentally, Colt has decided to open a new factory in Florida, not anywhere near New England.

If you wanted to find a town that epitomized the elitist Connecticut snob, you couldn’t do much better than Woodbridge. Mostly populated by Yale profs. and doctors IMHO.
A quick look at Google maps gives me the answer. The proposed location is an easy walk from a ton of low income housing in New Haven.

Well, I can't speak for Massachusetts,but here in Connecticut, gun rights are still valued. The CCW laws are "will issue", unlike many other ostensibly conservative states, and the gun-owning community is much larger than you might think. Also, there is skilled labor pool in CT that Ruger and Colt have drawn upon (not that this couldn't be duplicated elsewhere).
This said, we certainly do have more than our share of whiney, bossy, frightened nannies who extend their fears onto everyone else - if they don't like something, then nobody should. We do our best to overcome, but its a tough battle. Lots of them, few of us.
I worked part time for four years at the gun counter in a Cabela’s. The customers were happy, family people who enjoyed outdoors activities. They were dressed appropriately, clean and wholesome appearing. Most handled the arms in a safe manner and were not at all aggressive types. I felt more comfortable there than I felt the few times I attended my local school board meetings. Less nonsense talk and less ignorance on display.
I’d have not problem with a gun shop run by an ex cop who had a good record.

Ten miles up the road from Woodbridge is Cheshire Ct where two thugs invaded a home, beat the father nearly to death, tied him up in the basement, tied his two daughters to their beds and raped the 11 year old, raped and strangled the mother to death, poured gasoline over the girls and lit them afire while Cheshire cops parked outside eating donuts.
I hope this happens to Borgadir. He’s got it coming.
