New train promised to be cheaper, sooner, longer, slower
The Orange County Register ^ | 4-4-2012 | The Orange County Register Editorial Board

Desperate to spend billions rather than allow taxpayers to keep their money, the California High-Speed Rail Authority boasted Monday that it has cut costs, scaled back and speeded up the construction schedule of a train that should never be built.

Like all government boasts, it isn't what it appears to be...

‘High speed’ rail is a boondoggle and the State SHOULD be spending money enhancing their regular speed rail system.

Nevertheless, that is not what was sold to the citizens adn that’s not what they voted for, so the whole thing should be scrapped if they cannot deliver to the citizens what was promised. What was promised was a stupid idea in the first place, even if costs and time projects worked out (which they don’t/won’t).

Return the ‘high speed’ tax monies and start over planning for regular speed rail projects, especially freight transport. Trucking is going to need to be supplemented far more with rail in the future.

Not to pick nits, but the State of California has no rail system. The Union Pacific, Burlington Norther, and lots of smaller railroads have rail systems in California. The future of these private companies should be no more controlled by the whim of government planners than should the future of any other private business.

OCR demands to be on the excerpt-only list.

Then, they use FR 24/7 to dump one-sentence excerpts for each and every story, under “Mark Landsbaum” or “landsbaum.”

That’s why I asked if the real “landsbaum” would stand up.

Commies love trains.

Trains are a metaphor for everything communists believe in.

Yes and no. Some of the lines are on tracks that were abandoned by the big railroads. This is especially true of terminal tracks in the big cities who's only purpose is to serve the passenger trains. However you are correct that most of the rail is owned by the private railroads. Stations and rolling stock are owned by the state. Unlike the high speed rail project it is a workable system. For commuter service the cost is reasonable (especially when compared to the alternative of adding lanes to a freeway) and the speed is adequate. For long distance service, take a 737.

The Democrats aren’t desperate to spend billions of taxpayer’s dollars, they’re desperate to siphon off millions of taxpayer dollars to put in their pockets.

The fascists could make the trains run on time, but the Democrats just want some taxpayer money for their lavish lifestyle.

You are right that there are no state owned private rail system in CA. However, private rail (all over the USA) is closely linked/coordinated with state and federal transportation systems.
