(CNSNews.com) Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said on Monday that youth violence is a chronic health issue that can lead to asthma, obesity, or depression for "the youth who are involved," although she did not make clear whether she was speaking solely about the victims of youth violence or the perpetrators or both.
But it's important to remember--you just heard from the law enforcement side of this--its important to remember that the costs of violence go beyond deaths or injuries or tolls on families and communities, Sebelius said at a Department of Justice conference Monday on youth violence. Violence is also a chronic health issue.
It leads to asthma, it leads to obesity or depression among the youth who are involved, Sebelius said at the event in Washington, D.C.
Its an economic issue," Sebelius went on to say. Currently, its thought to cost about $14 billion in medical costs and lost productivity, not just for those acts of violence. And that clearly doesnt include the economics of the violence itself on communities.
Youth violence creates an incredibly vicious cycle since those who witness violence are more likely to become violent themselves, said Sebelius. And what all of you today have recognized is that just as the cost of youth violence can affect the whole community, the solutions to youth violence have to come also from the whole community. And at the Department of Health and Human Services, Im here to tell you that we are committed to supporting that work, both here with our strategies and policies in D.C. but also through our regional offices and our assets on the ground throughout the country.
We think that the solutions to youth violence, said Sebelius, start with child care and Head Start programs that we fund in cities around the country. And today were working with states and communities to make sure our children are getting the high quality early care and education they need, not only to succeed in school but for the first time, in a pretty historic partnership with the Department of Education, we recognize that social and emotional skills are a critical part of that early learning.
The Justice Departments Summit on Preventing Youth Violence is part of the Obama administrations response to the 2009 death of 16-year-old Derrion Albert, who was beaten to death by gang members in Chicago, organizers said.
Its a wonderful indication that in this administration we see the issue of youth violence in all of our departments and in all of our agencies being a really top priority, Sebelius said.
Attorney General Eric Holder, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan also spoke at the summit.
The Department of Justice brought delegations from several U.S. cities to the summit to develop strategies to combat youth violence, including Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Memphis, and San Jose and Salinas, Calif.
Kathleen Sebelius wasn't interested in violence against children while she was governor of Kansas. As a matter of fact she was busy covering up for Nola Foulston and George Tiller. Kansas is a prime example of a place to not raise children. Kathleen Sebelius record is all over google. She is evil , but look it up yourself.
I’m fat and angry because of what?
Democrats make it up as they go along. Whatever hyperbole will move the masses.
I am neither fat nor angry as a statement of fact.
Employment reduces youth violence. Oh, wait, Demonrats don’t believe in employment.
Those fat, asthmatic Crips are just plain mean.
They work it.
It’s great to be a liberal Democrat.
No matter what you say, no matter how stupid or outrageous it is, you get a pass.
This is a prime example.
I thought global warming caused Asthma and Obesity...
Gee, Governor, you’re right. Seems like it was always the fat, wheezing kids who were bullying me back in school /sarc
Yep, when I have trouble breathing, I don’t blame the cigarette I just finished, I regret the fist fights I got into in the 5th grade.
I guess my guns must be defective, because they've never caused any violence.
she’s right! just look at all them fat thugs wheezing down the streets being attacked by old ladies in wheelchairs...
Fifty years of the “Great Society” and its attendant huge increase in illegitimacy might just have some responsibility for youth violence.
Don't you get it? Isn't most street crime committed by asthmatic obese kids? Especially those with Amish last names?
As a life long Kansan and a parent, I can state that Kansas is a better place to raise children now that Tiller
is dead and Sebelius is in DC.
“African Americans die from asthma twice as often as whites, and have higher cancer mortality rates than any other group.”
“My 12-year-old son Brian has fought with asthma his entire life.”
“You see a parent of a child with asthma or leukemia must care about the environment around them. In every action I take, I am acting not just as EPA Administrator but also as a mother. I never lose sight of the fact that protecting childrens health is EPAs top priority. That means we take aggressive steps when we see areas where our kids are especially vulnerable.”
“This is a transformative moment for our country. We are likely to look back and see far-reaching changes on multiple fronts from our financial system to health care to our role as a world leader.”
“We have an emerging global challenge, difficult but pressing issues at home, an energized President, the proficiency to tackle almost anything that comes our way, and a population that is tired of waiting for action.”
- excerpts from EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson’s remarks to the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco- June, 2009
Obama wields power and strife while the Republicans dither.
And watching the Wizard of Oz can lead to scabies and overdue library books.
We are going to see a lot more of Obama's tactics stating XXXXX leads to public health crisis YYYYY, and is therefore covered under Obamacare and is the business of the federal government. Hopefully a world class, Supreme Court smack down of Obamacare will at least temporarily alleviate this problem. However, if the Supreme Court retroactively applies severability to the law and only removes the insurance mandate as being unconstitutional, then the remainder of Obamacare's carcass will spread its festering stink to everything else Obama wants to control.
What a joke our gubmint is.
