Expert: Zimmerman whispered 'punks' before shooting Trayvon Martin

SANFORD, Florida (CNN) - A forensic audio expert who analyzed 911 recordings disagrees with speculation that George Zimmerman uttered a racial slur moments before shooting Trayvon Martin to death.

What the neighborhood watch volunteer whispered as he followed the teen leading up to the deadly confrontation could weigh into the decision about charges against Zimmerman.

The garbled word that raised controversy was "punks," not "coons," said Tom Owen, chairman emeritus of the American Board of Recorded Evidence.

When Owen used a computer application to remove cell phone interference, the word became clearer, he said. After discussions with linguists, he became convinced that Zimmerman said "punks," he said.

He provided CNN with a copy of the processed audio.

In a recording, if you use band pass filters, you will remove everything within that frequency range. That may include noise AND content. If the noise is within the vocal range, the only way to reduce it's effect is flipping the phase on the noise and playing it with the original. But this has limited success as well. Unless the noise exactly matches the noise underlying the content, it can only reduce it.

The point is, once the noise and content are one file, separating them is not an exact science.

My thought is that if they Imperial Wizard of the most violent branch of the Ku Klux Klan were able to make a case of self-defense that was not contraindicated by physical or eye-witness tesstimony, he should not be arrested.

If there was any reasonable doubt that he had “hunted down” someone, black, white, or purple, he should not be convicted.

the audio frequency ability of the cell phone is controlling, was it a wideband cell phone ? What equipment was used to record the calls, what frequency response-likely wider than the cell phone.

There is no evidence that Trayvon wasn’t a punk, like every gangsta’ thug. Whether or not Trayvon got what was coming is a matter the DA, cops, and maybe the courts will have to decide.

While it is getting worked out, white people better start traveling in well armed groups. There are a lot of punks out there looking to hurt and kill innocent crackers. Defend yourselves with deadly force.

Cell phones are designed to transmit voice...which means a pretty narrow frequency range. I would guess somewhere between 250HZ on the low end, and around 8-10KHZ on the high end.

So any noise transmitted through a phone will be already be band-passed filtered into the vocal range.

For instance, if Zimmerman slammed his truck door at the exact time he said the word “cold”, it would be difficult to separate the 2 sounds once they become one audio file.

some newer cell phones are wideband not voiceband and if so noise outside voice frequencies could be filtered out...it would be interesting to know what type phone they both had as well if they had gps...and if the pd call center (non 911 could track the gps)
