Louisiana Governor’s School Voucher Plan Clears Legislature

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana will be home to one of the nation’s largest school voucher programs once Gov. Bobby Jindal signs legislation that recently passed his state’s legislature. Today, by a vote of 60-42, the Louisiana House of Representatives approved Gov. Jindal’s voucher expansion, which passed the Senate last night 24-15.

“This is a momentous day for the families of Louisiana,” State Superintendent of Education John White said. “All students deserve a fair chance in life, and that begins with the opportunity to attend a high-quality school. These policy changes are aligned with that central belief, and Gov. Jindal and state lawmakers have demonstrated a clear commitment to prioritize the educational rights of Louisiana’s next generation above all else.”

The expansion of the Student Scholarships for Educational Excellence Program will allow low- and middle-income students in Louisiana public schools graded “C,” “D,” or “F” by the state accountability system to receive government-funded vouchers to attend private schools. Currently, that option is available only to children in New Orleans and students with special needs in eligible parishes.

Last month, a poll commissioned by the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, an organization supportive of school vouchers, found that 60 percent of Louisiana voters surveyed were in favor of Gov. Jindal’s plan to provide vouchers to more families statewide.

You may be able to “vote with your feet” but vouchers are TAX dollars and carry strings of control with them. Charters are part of the system. Homeschool if you can but don’t use state CYBER options, as they are just more of the same system you want to escape. I just urge using caution as you choose. Question who is promoting CHOICE AND CHANGE.

“Currently, that option is available only to children in New Orleans and students with special needs in eligible parishes.”

That’s the part that I don’t like; we have a group here in NJ pushing for vouchers, but only in urban districts; in other words, suburban and rural taxpayers (who already pay for the urban public schools) will now be asked to pay for their private schools as well, and the costs (of both their own public school districts, as well as the urban schools) will force them to put THEIR children into their own crappy public school districts.

Both the Dems and the teachers’ unions know vouchers for all would spell the doom of them both.

Freedom and liberty are pipe dreams until they happen. It is extremely interesting to me that your private reply seems to contradict your public and more wordy reply. If you are a teacher in Massachusetts, which seems likely from the evidence, I can understand why. However, the collapse of this unwieldy, unproductive and extremely expensive bureaucracy of disinformation from which even the politicians and union leaders opt out, is certain.

A big government republican can get things right, you know.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2821856/posts

I hate smoking but I’d never welcome a dictator just to get rid of those nasty things.

Indianans should be throwing cigarettes off the docks in Gary to protest Daniels’ statist designs.

Plus, the GOP-E will tell you who is and isn’t a conservative.

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2012/01/25/mitch_daniels_delivers_terrific_speech

==============The Republican establishment doesn’t look at Daniels as a conservative. It’s why the speech was good but they don’t look at him as a conservative. They look at him as a one of them, a moderate. They see him as a moderate. He’s strong conservative on budget matters, but outside of that? “No, no, he’s not an extremist racist, sexist, bigot, homophobe who appeals to the NASCAR hicks who are pro-life.” (interruption) Well, he called Obama an “extremist” but he did in a polite way after praising Obama first.===============

When did Reagan ever praise Carter?

And the republicans ***********STILL******** hate Reagan for never praising Carter.

I’m thankful!!! that Reagan took it to Carter.

No Daniels for me. Ever. I would stay home and be happy about it.

See the above post for what makes Daniels a RINO.

Daniels is dead to me just like Romney is dead to me just like four years ago McCain was dead to me.

Statist(R) is just as dangerous as statist(D).

"I'd like to know what makes him a RINO."

I didn't say he was. I was pointing out to the previous poster that it takes more than their position on vouchers to determine whether anyone is.

In Washington, DC 42% of students are now in Public Charter Schools. Now that the better students with more motivated parents are out of their local schools, they have decided that since there is no increase in test scores in the remaining public schools, a bunch of them should also be closed or turned into Charter Schools. At some point, someone is actually going to have to deal with the problem that there are students at the low end of the totem pole that need more or different than they are getting now. Also that not all parents are motivated to raise their kids properly, or are working too many hours to supervise them properly.

You’re right. Plus supply and demand and ‘free’ voucher money will make private schools more expensive, particularly for those paying the full price. Just look at what has happened to college tuition.

Daniels is not a RINO and I don’t think anyone denies he is a strong fiscal conservatives. I think some people take issue with his stance that we ignore social issues and some are a little skeptical that the GOPe seems to be trying to push him. Jindal, on the other hand, is clearly not a GOPe guy; in fact, I believe he is the only republican currently in office with NATIONAL name recognition that has not endorsed Romney (correct me if I’m wrong). Jindal is clearly independent, not so clear with Daniels.

Tuition tax credits may be a better option. Keeping your own $ is not “taxpayer dollars” .(despite what leftards may say).

Tuition tax credits are still tax dollars and must be used in ‘approved’ institutions. That’s the problem. Where could you ‘spend’ them that isn’t part of the same failed system? Would you be free to use that money to buy curricula of your own choosing for homeschooling purposes, or to fund an educational field trip as part of your homeschool plan? I sincerely doubt it. It would be worth investigating in your state. Let me know what you find out.

He's done more for ending statism than just about any Republican in the country.

The voucher programs alone in Louisiana and Indiana have the potential of ridding us of the scourge of single payer public education. Health Care and Education combined are the vast majority of state spending in every state, and he has taken on both.

Am I in favor of a smoking ban? No. Would I accept a smoking ban if I got an education voucher program, ending funding of Planned Parenthood, and a voter ID law? You bet.

“Just look at what has happened to college tuition.”

I’m not sure that college tuition increases were even justified; some of these schools have a lot of money socked away, and I’m sure much of the money they spend is on silly nonsense.

Well, that’s the answer. The smoking ban and the love from the big government wing of the republican party. I’m sure there’s more.

The GOP-E really is the canary in the coal mine here though.

If they’re supporting Daniels, he’s no conservative. And that’s a fact that’s as reliable as the Rock of Gibraltar. This is the same GOP-E that hated and still hates Reagan. So what makes Reagan different from Daniels? Conservatism.

The GOP-E does not support conservatives until the odds are so overwhelming. And even then, it’s 50/50 at best.

Did you miss how the GOP-E was sniping at Allen West using the redistricting as a weapon? Yep. That GOP-E supports Daniels.

No way in h3#l Daniels is a conservative. No sir.

We need to watch this very closely. Louisiana has always been at the bottom regarding school grades. If this pans out, which I believe it will, there will be no more need for the Department of Education. I wish.

Of course, the lawsuits are coming from the NEA, ACLU, and other race mongers. Expect it go to the USSC via the Department of Education, which should be disbanded. In a perfect world, it would be State issue, only.

"State control is NOT a good option."

I prefer State control over Fedgov control via the Department of Education. That is one bureaucracy that could be completely eliminated without anyone missing it, except for its union members. Can anyone explain succinctly explain what the DoE does other than lobby for more money for the National Education Association (NEA) and pass restrictive regulations?

Federal, State, County, and City employees should never have been allowed to unionize. It is contrary to their basic mission of service and only serves themselves with their outrageous pensions and tenure. Those obscene pensions are killing many States nowadays.

The reason I am such a big States' Rights advocate is because you can always move to another state if you don't agree with its policies/government. You can't get away from Fedgov control without moving out of the country.

Louisiana will be home to one of the nation’s largest school voucher programs

The academic ranking for students in Louisiana is at the bottom, so it will be interesting to see if the school voucher works. NEA must be in a panic mode.
