Maryland Mega Millions winner says she ‘misplaced’ winning ticket
New York Daily News ^ | 04/06/2012 | Nina Mandell

The flaky McDonald's worker who claimed she had one of the winning Mega Million Lottery tickets now says she lost the slip.

When asked by NBC News if she was going to ever to ask for her share of the dough, Mirlande Wilson replied, "If I find it (the ticket).”

The NBC reporter then asked if she had lost the ticket, to which the 37-year-old Baltimore woman replied, "I misplaced it."

She insisted she didn’t make up the story though.

“I did not make up no story to get no attention,” she told NBC.

The strange conversation is just the latest mind-boggling twist thrown by the supposed newly minted millionaire. Earlier this week, she called a press conference only to have her lawyer, Edward Smith Jr., ask for the journalists gathered to go away.

"(Wilson) would like all of you to go home," he told the bewildered crowd. "This needs to stop so she and her children can go back to a normal life."

He added he hadn't seen the winning ticket either and "cannot say with any certainty this ticket exists."

Wilson has also been sketchy in her tale of how she had a winning ticket for the record $656 million drawing in the first place.

She first said she bought the ticket at a 7-Eleven for herself, then said a co-worker purchased one for her while buying tickets for a group of McDonald's employees.

She has also claimed to have hidden the ticket at McDonald's — a claim her co-workers have said is dubious.

"She could not have hidden any ticket here," one employee told the Daily News this week. "She hasn't been back and she doesn't have any locker to hide it. She would not hide it in the bathroom or anything."

It was the last option. “I’m not sure.”

"I'm not sure." implies some knowledge of the subject. It should have been "I don't know."

‘“I did not make up no story to get no attention,” she told NBC.’

A triple negative!!!! We have a winner!

So what is she really saying? That she made up the story to get absolutely no attention whatsoever?

Often when someone wins in Cal, we hear about where the ticket was purchased before we know the winner.

You would think Maryland officials would know where the winning ticket was purchased and at what time. Perhaps the store has the register area on security tape.

Unless she signed the ticket on the back it is as good as a Bearer Bond and she has no claim to it whatsoever.

Didn't Whitey Bulger and his thugs "convince" a lottery winner that it might be a good idea to give the unsigned, winning ticket to Whitey? As you stated, unless it is signed, a winning lottery ticket is a bearer bond that belongs to whoever holds it.

“I believe she bought the ticket and has given it to someone she thinks she can trust so that that person will cash it for her.”

Yup something like that. She wants all the money and not payoff the people in her pool who will sue her. Recently one such person was sued by her office pool and had to split her millions with them.....She was taken to court and lost. She was not allowed to collect until the court case was settled

“I did not make up no story to get no attention,” she told NBC.

I tried to parse the sentence but the triple negative has me confused.

Maybe if I try one negative at a time, I can figure this out.
lol Thanks for giving the triple negative a try. I was tempted to to try and parse it because I knew it'd be bugging me all day. :)

I hope she did have it and lose it. She’s way too stupid to survive having that much money.

I thought I heard somewhere early on that they did check the store video and the only one purchasing lottery tickets in the time frame was a gentleman.

I do find it odd that as of just a few hours ago none of the three winning tickets have been redeemed.

When the take-home winnings exceed $100 million, it is wise to consult an attorney and others who can set up a trust to make it more difficult for pests and worse to determine the winner(s).

IF that is true- are there any laws in Maryland that this woman can be prosecuted under???
She deserves it.

The lottery will say “No ticket No money “ then watch the screaming start with accusations of RACISM. You see this slow motion train wreck from a mile off.

An excellent caution. I think in CA at least they can tell just about every detail of the transaction from a collection of dashes printed on the ticket — time and date of sale, and which location, for sure. That’s some security against a simple “I said, you said” problem; if the store has surveillance and keeps it for a while, so much the better.

Hey, you gotta give her some credit for working, even if there’s some welfare in there too.

Methinks she needs to sit in with an elementary school class and learn basic grammar.

They tried doing that in Maryland but apparently the time stamp on the ticket wasn't in sync with the security camera at the place it was purchased from.
