An elementary school class picture is causing quite a stir after the photographer Photoshopped a cartoon smiley face over a boy's head.
David Claussen, owner of Broward County Pictures, took the photo of the second grade class at Sawgrass Elementary school, but was notified afterward that two of the students hadn't signed consent forms and needed to be removed.

That was my first thought too. “Consent forms”? What’s that all about?

That’s a second grade class? Those kids look bigger than just 7 or 8. Maybe it’s an artifact of the blurred-out faces, but they look more like middle school kids.
Don’t you know what the six hardest years are for a disadvantaged youth? Third grade.

Looks pretty obvious to me that what is deemed “offensive” is the fact that the photographer used a brown-colored smiley-face.
If he had used a white or yellow smiley face, would we be hearing this hullaballoo? I think not.
Btw, according to article, the photographer said he was asked by the PTA to use a smiley face (as opposed to the originally proposed shape, a star). It wasn’t his idea.
There seems to be a lot of “race” stories lately.
And I do not believe in coincidences, especailly when it comes to politics.
Is the Democrat “mainstream” news complex stirring up the “white guilt” vote again, just in time for the November election?

So if it is a dark skinned young kid, what would have happened if he put a white face on the young fellow?
This just seems like a no win situation.

I wouldn’t necessarily call this “offensive” and “degrading.” A better word would be idiotic. Why not take the picture, then inform the parents that the photo cannot be released until all consent forms have been received. If the forms are not back within a certain timeframe, the photo will be retaken with only those students who have returned the signed consent form. Putting a smiley face on the kid is not only an idiotic thing to do, it ruins the picture for everyone else in the photo. Years from now, when these kids look at this picture, do you think they’ll want to see something like this?
For School, summer camps, sports teams, there are consent forms for the photos.
It’s to protect your child’s privacy, if that is something you’re worried about.
You wouldn’t really think about it in normal circumstances, but a few years ago I read about a creepy porn guy who was posting pictures and names of male high school swimmers or water polo guys on his website. The athletes’ photos had been taken at school, as part of normal school coverage of sports events, like the student paper or school website, but they were taken way out of that context into this creepy website for gay men to leer at them. It’s stuff like that which makes parents want to have some control over whether or where their children’s photos are used.
It’s part of the way that internet porn undermines our lives even if we never use it.
Dang. If the kid was white. He could have used 'white out'.
How about, instead, getting the consent forms signed BEFORE the picture is taken, and then anyone who doesn’t sign it, doesn’t get in the picture?

Will they be traumatized somehow? Will the painful memory of that kid's parents not signing the release come flooding back, just when they thought they had put the whole ugly episode behind them and got on with their lives?
The article mentioned some people felt the image was humiliating. It did not state what was humiliating, was it the cartoonish looking smiley face or that the color of the smiley face closely matched the color of the child’s hands.
Way back when they didn't worry about such things ~ now they do.
This is a clever solution to an otherwise very tricky problem. i'd just erased their heads!
I teach 3rd grade in Texas and that is exactly what we do. Inevitably, the parents who refused to sign the consent form almost always whine about how their kids were not “allowed” to be in the class picture .
Lighten up. Nobody's saying they will be traumatized. I'm just saying that, years from now, it would be nice to have a decent picture of yourself and your classmates to look at, rather than one that was doctored up because of this kind of unnecessary Bull****

Actually, the “outrage” would probably be even louder if the guy superimposed the usual white “smiley face”. “You made my son look white!!!” You can’t win with these people so in the words of Bette Midler, “F*** ‘em if they can’t take a joke”

No kidding. I grew up in the 1970s when "embarrassing" school photos were the norm. I look at photos of myself from that era and it reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite. Somehow, I survived the mortification and ended up having a successful life...
I would never give my consent for such a photo. On the other hand, I wouldn't be in the photo either.
Professional photographers need to get consent forms for any photo with people in it. AFAIK that has been true for a while now
The kid's black, I think. If he'd used a white or yellow smiley face, Jesse Jackson would be involved by now.
Professional photographers need consent forms for ANY photo with people in it. It has to do with ownership of the image. If they don’t get the form they can’t publish it.
(Don’t ask me about crowd shots, because I don’t know.)

I don’t get the consent form thing. When my son, the photographer, takes a group portrait he sells a copy before the picture is taken. All the group is included in the photo if they desire. The ones who don’t want a picture simply don’t buy it. Must not have been a professional photographer and the pictures were free.
