Breaking: NBC Fires Producer Who Created False Zimmerman Audio By Matthew Sheffield Created 04/06/2012 - 7:55pm
NBC News has fired the producer it says was responsible for creating the deceptive audio recording of George Zimmerman communicating with a 9-1-1 operator, according to the New York Times.
The network is still refusing to release the name of the producer, although according to Times reporter Brian Stelter, the producer is based in Miami and has worked there for a number of years. According to Stelter's network sources, NBC is still insisting the deceptive edit was not done deliberatiely. The network has refused to say how exactly someone could accidentally have edited the tape to make Zimmerman appear to be racially motivated:
NBC News has fired a producer who was involved in the production of a misleading segment about the Trayvon Martin case in Florida.
The person was fired on Thursday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the disciplinary action who declined to be identified discussing internal company matters. They also declined to name the fired producer. A spokeswoman for NBC News declined to comment.
The action came in the wake of an internal investigation by NBC News into the production of the segment, which strung together audio clips in such a way that made George Zimmermans shooting of Mr. Martin sound racially motivated. Ever since the Feb. 26 shooting, there has been a continuing debate about whether race was a factor in the incident.
The segment in question was shown on the Today show on March 27. It included audio of Mr. Zimmerman saying, This guy looks like hes up to no good. He looks black.
But Mr. Zimmermans comments had been taken grossly out of context by NBC. [...]
The editing of the segment was initially noticed by NewsBusters, an arm of the Media Research Center, a conservative media monitoring group. On March 31, NBC told The Washington Post that it would investigate. [...]
The people with direct knowledge of the firing characterized the misleading edit as a mistake, not a purposeful act.
While NBC has taken a good first step toward rectifying the situation, until the network releases the name of the person and explains its theory that the edit was not deliberate, its credibility is still under question.
Full Times story is here.
Yelp. Although it was buckhead who made the connection, it was Howlin that created the new thread and brought attention to it,
Had just made the comment that my parent owned one of the IBMs with changable ball fonts...There where only four choices. We owned two. Very expensive.
Add a few more zeroes to that figure, and we’ll be talking. A million bucks won’t even make NBC/GE break a sweat.
True. The O&Os must be licensed. But the network, which the op was referring to, does not.
Sue the bast**ds.Sue them for every nickel they have!
I will, thanks!
I edited plenty of audiotape in the late 70s while working for various radio stations, including an all-news station in Hartford. Of course, with a reel-to-reel and a splicing block, the physical process was very different than what’s done in the all-digital editing programs. But the mental process is the same, and if you’re working on the network level, you damn well better abide by the “measure-twice-cut-once” practice or you’re gone.
There is absolutely no way this was inadvertent. None.
With digital editing, covering up the obvious edit would have been easy and quick.
I’m thinking the editor wanted to leave it in to alert people it was an edit.
What did the White House hire the guy or something?
Correct. Buckhead was the first to point out that the memos were created on a word-processing program..which was not even invented at the time they were supposedly written..something to do with fonts and proportional spacinng..which I really don’t understand. I expect if you used the SEARCH feature you could find the original threads..they were something..
He’ll have a better paying job in the Obama administration on Monday.
I still own an IBM selectric, but they will not do proportional spacing. Only a PC could duplicate what was presented.
Photo copy was so poor quality they thought they would not get caught.
I actually worked for a time with Bill Burkett. Many years before the RatherGate incident. Bill was always a died in the wool tattooed on the butt Dem. He was a National Guard officer when I knew him. He was the guy who made the connection for Dan Rather to get the forgery. It was copied at Kinko’s in Abilene, TX. Dan Rather’s daughter was involved in the scam.
BTTT
They freely released Zimmermans name but are hiding the name of the person who attempted to get him lynched....
All those names seem familiar, but it also seems a lifetime ago.
Wasn’t it his daughter that was also connected to Mapes?
Still true 8 years later -- in Texas, Forgery is a Third-Degree Felony, and to transmit by wire is an enhancement.
<"size=30">Ditto, man DITTO. We don't know how much they are fibbing to us this time.
TRANSLATION: They’re transferring him to Center for American Progress (or Media Matters).
Same as when (avowed communist) Van Jones left the White House.
They just reshuffle and promote.
It’s a badge of honor to attack the truth, so this sort of “sacrifice” is actually a resume enhancement.
Do they think no one else has any experience with equipment? Many high school have audio/visual equipment for sport event use... all run by students.
Yep. They had all been to a meeting of local Dem officials near Abilene. The woman “blamed” for the forgery was from San Antonio.
sure they did...
Yep. But obviously no legal penalties apply to Dems. They mean well, so the law does not apply. /sarcasm Any law.
Maybe the law is dumb in this area, but to defame a public figure, simple negligence isn’t sufficient. The plaintiff must prove “actual malice,” i.e., knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard of whether X was true or false. It looks the producer of that segment meets that strict standard. But NBC may advance a rogue producer narrative, according to which it would be guilty of is falling for the deception of the evil producer. That’s simple negligence, at worst.
And absent a smoking-gun e-mail or other definitive evidence showing that higher-ups at NBC were in on the deception, NBC just might get away with it.
But that’s a legal analysis.
Public relations might dictate settling quick, because a drawn-out case in which NBC’s DEFENSE is “We’re not guilty because we’re idiots, not deliberate liars” would do much more reputation damage than would a million or so forked over to Zimmerman, cloaked by a confidentiality agreement.
FYI...see the link in post 161
It was pointed out that the only typewriter capable of changing font was the IBM select-matic,(which we all discussed for awhile) Then BH pointed out that a machine capable of the creating that font and spacing had not been invented and it had to be computer created. More discussion. Then Howlin recognized what had been discovered and started a fresh thread.
Was on both threads. The first where it was discussed and the second created by Howlin to get the word out and bring attention to the fraud.
I miss Howlin...
I hope Zimmerman has lots of good lawyers....He should be compensated over this effine nonsense and because his life has been temporary ruined.....

I was there... it was magic!

So, let me get this straight — George Zimmerman’s name has been out there - the witnesses’s names - out there - fake home address given - and they refuse to name the person responsible for this race-baiting incident? Incredible.
@ErikWemple: NBC has NBC to thank for allowing Zimmerman tape scandal to keep chugging along: http://wapo.st/HnKfuw
Was it a freeper or little green footballs that superimposed the faux that Rather presented to an identical copy created on someone’s PC. Those were the days....Remember having a B or I that someone turned on and how it would continue through the posts until it got turned off? Computers are so much easier now..Sitting in my lounge chair, connected to internet through cell phone, How fast technology changes!
Me too. Occasionally send her a ping. As do a few others. Also miss Bah Bah but keep in touch with one of her daughters through face book.
Is that a tweet? What do all the parts mean?
Judy Miller and Kristin ??? really were critical of NBC because they had not told their listener they misreported the material, but only gave out a news release to other media and it was vague. They also have not apologized to Zimmerman.....Need to have check book in hand when they do. OTOH maybe they are in negotiations to settle and that’s why they are quiet.
Bryan Preston, at The PJ Tatler, wrote that he suspects the “seasoned producer” at NBC responsible for this deliberate editing of the Zimmerman tape is Jim Bell, the executive producer of the Today Show, and provides his reasons why.
Deadpool anyone?
Whoever it is, they will probably be hired by MSNBC, a Soros front such as Media Matters or Campaign for American Progress, or perhaps Al Gore’s wonderful TV network.
Their is such an incestuous relationship between NBC, MSNBC, Soros, Gore and John Podesta, that they should be arrested for it.
So NBC got caught and has given us an ersatz “apology” and grossly insulted our intelligence while giving it. BFD.
They accomplished their goal. You can’t put toothpaste back in the tube. There is absolutely way the damage caused can be rectified. That was the game plan from the get go.
It certainly has.

Even though the ladies are posing, their body language is saying, “Yuck, what a creep”!
The networks are controlled, and totally regulated by biggov, and they do what their told. This is no secret.
They’re TV talk shows are choreographed, rehearsed, with the hard obvious questions being routinely omitted and or soft balled.
Trust me, those capable of critical thought, understand how controlled and manipulated these broadcasts are.
Rose Mary Woods
His body language is saying, “Girls, please don’t touch me!” LOL
Three networks deliberately deceived the public and tainted the jury pool. Zimmerman cannot get a fair trial anywhere is the country. What they did will backfire.
“NBC needs to have its FCC License pulled.”
What makes you think they have or need one?
Individual stations are licensed. Maybe pull those?
Actually I am uncomfortable with using Government licensing as a means to shut up anyone even if they ARE a bunch of lying scumbags.
Not good enough.
We need a name. When CNN, CBS, or ABC tries to hire the guy we will be forewarned.
Assuming that this is not just another anti-conservative propaganda hit piece from the MSM, it's either racially or politically motivated, or both.
I really don't care about internal company matters, I want to know, 1) was this racially motivated which it appears to be, and 2) was this politically motivated.
I want to know this person's race and political affiliation. Til NBC comes across with that information, it's slander and defamation of character and I hope that Mr. Zimmerman sues their socks off.
I keep hearing how many layers of accountability NBC has to ensure that this kind of thing doesn't happen so it must have been a conspiracy of several people to make sure that this happened.
Clipping out the part about the appearance of drug use, just so he could be painted with the racial remark makes it either racially or politically motivated or both.
There's no third option IMHO.
