Breaking: NBC Fires Producer Who Created False Zimmerman Audio By Matthew Sheffield Created 04/06/2012 - 7:55pm

NBC News has fired the producer it says was responsible for creating the deceptive audio recording of George Zimmerman communicating with a 9-1-1 operator, according to the New York Times.

The network is still refusing to release the name of the producer, although according to Times reporter Brian Stelter, the producer is based in Miami and has worked there for a number of years. According to Stelter's network sources, NBC is still insisting the deceptive edit was not done deliberatiely. The network has refused to say how exactly someone could accidentally have edited the tape to make Zimmerman appear to be racially motivated:

NBC News has fired a producer who was involved in the production of a misleading segment about the Trayvon Martin case in Florida.

The person was fired on Thursday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the disciplinary action who declined to be identified discussing internal company matters. They also declined to name the fired producer. A spokeswoman for NBC News declined to comment.

The action came in the wake of an internal investigation by NBC News into the production of the segment, which strung together audio clips in such a way that made George Zimmerman’s shooting of Mr. Martin sound racially motivated. Ever since the Feb. 26 shooting, there has been a continuing debate about whether race was a factor in the incident.

The segment in question was shown on the “Today” show on March 27. It included audio of Mr. Zimmerman saying, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.”

But Mr. Zimmerman’s comments had been taken grossly out of context by NBC. [...]

The editing of the segment was initially noticed by NewsBusters, an arm of the Media Research Center, a conservative media monitoring group. On March 31, NBC told The Washington Post that it would investigate. [...]

The people with direct knowledge of the firing characterized the misleading edit as a mistake, not a purposeful act.

While NBC has taken a good first step toward rectifying the situation, until the network releases the name of the person and explains its theory that the edit was not deliberate, its credibility is still under question.

Full Times story is here.

NBC was trying to create the news with their edit of the tape. Any excuse otherwise, especially that the edit was inadvertent, is BS.

So they found a scapegoat. Huzzah huzzah. This producer is nothing but a tiny cog in an utterly corrupt machine.

We’re supposed to take their word for it? Sure, they’ve never lied to us in the past. Have they?

They’re not looking forward to the concept of addressing George Zimmerman as “Boss”.

It can't be done. Editing is a conscious process. If it were accidental, the edit point would have been randomly placed.

The producer is not a scapegoat. He’s guilty. Grab some popcorn...

This producer is just a fall guy. NBC has a history of propagandizing. This is not nearly enough. People could still be killed, and lives have been ruined because of their actions. One producer did not do this, there is a bigger fish that should have been aware of what was going on.

A mistake would be clipping the beginning or ending of the audio. Carefully editing out the 911 dispatcher’s question about what color the perp was was a deliberate act. NBC is still lying.

Wouldn't surprise me if he looked like Obama's son. A non-black producer would probably have been embarrassed in public.

A defamation action by Zimmerman (BTW, wasn’t that the original name of Bob Dylan?) would name as defendants both the corporate entity NBC, and the individual producer directly behind that segment (and maybe some additional individual John Does.) What NBC is doing by firing the guy is attempting - with regard to itself only - to negate the “actual malice” element required to prove libel against a public figure. Thus, in the likely event of a suit, NBC will argue: “We accepted in good faith this segment as an accurate representation of the 911 call, but were deceived by this rogue producer (who previously had a good track record).”

In this way, NBC may rely on a narrative of a rogue producer who did commit defamation, in an effort to exculpate itself, NBC, of the charge of defamation. And no doubt, that’s why the producer & NBC will be represented separate counsel.

I have been involved in quite a few fire/ems incidents where the only thing I recognized was the address. The media is worthless at best.
