Employers add fewer jobs than expected

Employers pulled back sharply on hiring last month, a reminder that the U.S. economy may not be growing fast enough to sustain robust job growth. The unemployment rate dipped, but mostly because more Americans stopped looking for work.

The Labor Department says the economy added 120,000 jobs in March, down from more than 200,000 in each of the previous three months.

The unemployment rate fell to 8.2%, the lowest since January 2009. The rate dropped because fewer people searched for jobs. The official unemployment tally only includes those seeking work.

I always wondered if these jobs were really added or these were already open positions that an employer finally filled ?

...fewer jobs than expected, by whom?

I think most Freepers know that the economy is far weaker than portrayed, thanks to over government regulations and spending and debt.

Yeah, we’re a recovery all right - the top technology firms in the country have been laying off people since last fall - HP, Google - are just two of the companies that have public about their plans. They’re not alone. There is a mass movement of high tech jobs out of the country - despite the ‘happy talk’ in the technical press - this ‘recovery’ is anything but that!

Geez! I’m going to HAVE to type more slowly:

It should read: Yeah, we’re IN a recovery all right......
HP, Google - are two of the companies that have GONE public with their plans......

I apologize.

In Illinois, I believe there is an effort to drive people off of unemployment benefit roles to lower the unemployment figure by making it more difficult to qualify for benefits. I heard one report on the news a few weeks back that they were now going to require people to come in for interviews to make sure they are saying the right things when being interviewed by prospective employers. I also wonder if Obama held back some of his stimulus stash for the election year. There is a whole new round of road construction happening here. Again, I heard one report on the news that the drop in unemployment was led by the “construction” industry. Lastly, I believe the temporary rise in consumer spending in March was lead by the unusually hot weather. Stores were crowded with people buying summer clothes to wear. In reality, there is no economic recovery, only election year smoke and mirrors....

“There is a whole new round of road construction happening here.”

Yes, here in NJ we’re seeing the usual pre-election construction. I just had to re-align my wheels because they never fixed the roads after LAST winter (2010/2011 - the one with snow & ice); they saved it until it could prod people into voting Obama in 2012 (I still don’t think he’ll win the state that elected Chris Christie as governor; we’re still in terrible economic shape while Christie remains popular). Even the construction projects going on don’t seem to be employing many people; I believe the projects are designed to run into early November.
