Were a little bit closer to knowing. Reuters:
An internal NBC News probe has determined a seasoned producer was to blame for a misleading clip of a 911 call that the network broadcast during its coverage of the Trayvon Martin shooting, according to two sources at the network.
NBC News brass interviewed more than half a dozen staffers during its investigation of the misleadingly edited 911 call placed by George Zimmerman just before he shot the unarmed Florida teenager, said the sources, one of whom is an executive at the network.
The clip aired on the networks flagship Today morning show last week.
The edit made it appear that Zimmerman immediately told police that Martin was black, when, in fact, the full tape reveals that the neighborhood watch captain only did so when responding to a question posed by a dispatcher.
There was no clear indication on Thursday of what, if any, disciplinary actions would be taken against the producer or other staff involved in the incident.
The sources at the network, who declined to identify the producer, said NBC News executives did not know the 911 call was misleadingly edited until news reports surfaced days later on right-leaning blogs including Newsbusters.org and Breitbart.com.

.....This is coming from the very top....
“Is this being directed by the Obozo administration?”
Is the Pope Catholic?
CNN Report of Racial Slur in Trayvon Martin Case Under Scrutiny (Video)
The cable news network twice enhanced audio of a 911 call placed by George Zimmerman and came up with two different results.
The cases described at at http://www.oyez.org/cases/1960-1969/1966/1966_37 are not based upon causing a threat of physical injury by news organizations; and in the cases described at http://www.oyez.org/cases/1960-1969/1966/1966_37 there was no malicious intent nevertheless..
it seems to me that any lawyer could easily sue the hell out of ABCNNBCBS, et al.
Yes, part of the Obozo plan for re-election. Whence did this come? Who is the propaganda boss? Which of Obozo's minions is responsible for directing this?
This was a blood libel, this edited tape case. A lynch lie. Lies this wicked led to lynchings in small towns. That was word of mouth among the locals, whispered lies and rumors that led to the noose. Some true, some false.
Needs to be repeated over and over and over!
I’m surprised they didn’t scapegoat some intern production assistant claiming (s)he was some evil republican infiltrator.
No, not that I can find. But the more important question is who is directing this operation. Not at NBC, but over all the media. This is not an internal NBC exploit....
When we get the name, will we tweet the address too?
If there is any violence in Sanford FL, in which any person, or organization (Police dept, municipal offices, taxpayers etc) are harmed physically or financially, they must hold NBC, and other networks civilly responsible. Perhaps a class action suit would be possible. FL, Sanford, and its citizens are being directly harmed by this malicious action by an NBC employee that sought to ‘juice’ this story for personal gain and that of his employer.

In Trayvons case, (Parks & Crump) alerted the news media more quickly. They phoned the Rev. Al Sharpton almost instantly, and organized marches with local civil rights activists. They also started pressing for federal involvement and alleging a cover-up from the get-go.
In court, you have the jury, Crump says. Our job is to get the case to a jury. We need to fight first in the court of public opinion. The jury is the American people.
Someone Must Be Punished for Killing Trayvon Martin, Says Mom Sybrina Fulton
by Allison Samuels Mar 22, 2012 2:04 AM EDT
The now controversial killing of Trayvon garnered virtually no mainstream media attention in the days immediately after he was fatally shot, but that all changed when the teenagers parents decided to hire civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and his law firm to get more answers on exactly how and why their son died.
They called me the same day they were notified that their son was dead, Crump told The Daily Beast. When I heard their unarmed teenage son was shot to death, I just knew thered be an arrest shortly. There wasnt an arrest 48 hours later, and then I knew wed have to take this outside of Sanford if we wanted justice.
Trayvons parents were told by the Sanford police that Zimmerman wasnt arrested in their sons death because the facts of the case did not dispute his claim of self-defense.
For Crump, taking the Trayvon Martin story outside of Sanford simply entailed dialing up a few well-placed friends such as the Rev. Al Sharpton. Crump worked closely with the civil rights leader in 2006 on another racially charged casethe controversial death of a 14-year-old, African-American inmate of a Florida boot camp.
I had to call people like Sharpton and a few other black civil rights leaders and the black media to tell them about this story, said Crump. I had to get them to understand what happened to this young man and what hadnt happened in his case so they could spread the word.
Historically, cases of murder and violence against blacks in the United States rarely have been given the same amount of attention as cases in which the victims of crime are whiteand often go unnoticed and unprosecuted.
Just days after hearing the details of Trayvons death, Sharpton arranged to have Crump and the teenagers parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, on his syndicated radio show and his popular MSNBC show, Politics Nation, to tell their story.
In the wake of non-stop media attention from the likes of Sharpton and CNNs Don Lemon concerning the Trayvon Martin case, black media blogs such as MediaTakeOut.com and Huffington Post Black Voices also began publishing accounts and editorials about the Florida casedaily. Almost instantly, readers of all races, ages, and backgrounds began tweeting and posting on Facebook their outrage over how the police have handled the case, and the lack of an arrest in the shooting. To date, almost 1 million people have signed a Change.Org petition to have Zimmerman arrested. In response to the widespread outrage, the Justice Department has opened an investigation into the shooting.
STATEMENT BY REVEREND AL SHARPTON AND NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK REGARDING THE SHOOTING OF TRAYVON MARTIN AN UNARMED AFRICAN-AMERICAN TEENAGER KILLED BY A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH CAPTAIN IN FLORIDA

NYT article this morning said NBC Fired the Producer responsible for the editing.
Civil and criminal legal action is the best way to take these news demons down.
If you play the 911 tape backwards at that questionable point it is clear for everyone to hear:
Zimmerman said “PAUL IS DEAD”.
I kid you not..
He must have practiced that for months to get it right...
Thanks for the background.
It reinforces the question I asked, Who is directing this. And it is not coming from Sharpton, he is not “sharp”.
This is coming from the direction at 1600 Penn Ave. Now lets look for the blood trail back to the source.
The name Jim Bell has been floating around but attempts to confirm from him have gone unanswered.
I predict Zimmerman will be happy this happened because NBC will end up funding his defense team.
ZImmerman has hit the lottery.
Ahhhhh, a name to do a little research on, thanks.
