Parting Ways [National Review fires John Derbyshire!]

Anyone who has read Derb in our pages knows he’s a deeply literate, funny, and incisive writer. I direct anyone who doubts his talents to his delightful first novel, “Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream, or any one of his “Straggler” columns in the books section of NR. Derb is also maddening, outrageous, cranky, and provocative. His latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible. We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways. Derb has long danced around the line on these issues, but this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation. It’s a free country, and Derb can write whatever he wants, wherever he wants. Just not in the pages of NR or NRO, or as someone associated with NR any longer.

this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation.

One of the "outlandish" things in the column was advice to avoid black neighborhoods. Now there are far too many times when that is life-saving advice based upon fifty years or so of experience.

Take Cincinnati.. please!

Whites driving home by their usual routes through Avondale were dragged from cars beaten some killed and some left with permanent damage. That was in the 1960s and happened multiple years.

I left Cincinnati in 1970 but I know that there have been similar events there -- and in other cities -- in the years since the 1960s.

I hope Mr. Lowry and the rest have the courage of their convictions to freely drive through all areas of their cities throughout the coming months. Fat chance.

Obama been laudin' that martial law and I bet he and his sons got plans to stir up all kinds of turmoil (Van Jones warned of it too). So good advice. Careful where you are from now on. That of course is racist.

Blacks should be careful about white neighborhoods. That of course in not racist. Go figure.

Derbyshire is a sociologist and a prison doctor from what I have read, he would know these things better than anyone, he sees it on a daily basis.

You are confusing John Derbyshire with Theodore Dalrymple.

Fortunately your daughter is paying heed now. This poor tourist in Baltimore was beaten, robbed and stripped bear by black hoodlums for no reason while onlookers laughed. link I was shocked to read of the many recent black on white crimes linked by one of the commenters. Of course the 'reverends' are too busy hunting down Zimmerman to care.
