Anyone who has read Derb in our pages knows he’s a deeply literate, funny, and incisive writer. I direct anyone who doubts his talents to his delightful first novel, “Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream, or any one of his “Straggler” columns in the books section of NR. Derb is also maddening, outrageous, cranky, and provocative. His latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible. We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways. Derb has long danced around the line on these issues, but this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation. It’s a free country, and Derb can write whatever he wants, wherever he wants. Just not in the pages of NR or NRO, or as someone associated with NR any longer.
I could NEVER stand that metrosexual prick Lowry. I’m glad others are seeing him for what he is.

Derbyshire’s rules are really nothing but common sense. I was doing that 43 years ago when I lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, when the KKK was still a force. Now it is mandatory to follow those rules to keep safe.
I sent that web page to my brother-in-law who lives in the Memphis area. He has been following similar rules for his lifetime.
You’re referring to the excellent British writer Theodore Dalrymple. I think his latest book is”Life at the Bottom”.

(Christopher?) wrote an article that read like it belonged in The Nation.
Apparently it was in Taki’s magazine -a webzine. I tried to access it directly from the website and was unable to. I think they must have pulled it entirely.

One of the "outlandish" things in the column was advice to avoid black neighborhoods. Now there are far too many times when that is life-saving advice based upon fifty years or so of experience.

Whites driving home by their usual routes through Avondale were dragged from cars beaten some killed and some left with permanent damage. That was in the 1960s and happened multiple years.
I left Cincinnati in 1970 but I know that there have been similar events there -- and in other cities -- in the years since the 1960s.
I hope Mr. Lowry and the rest have the courage of their convictions to freely drive through all areas of their cities throughout the coming months. Fat chance.

You are confusing him with Theodore Dalrymple. Derbyshire is a mathematician with a Chinese wife and Amerasian children.
It’s been my observation that minorities will agitate for “equal treatment”, but once they gain parity ot get on top, the whole metric changed. Instead of saying “Hot damn, now we can move ahead”, they say “It’s Payback Time” and expend their energies getting revenge or abusing their newly-won advantages.
My first experience in this was in 1970s Canada when we went up there to see the Olympics and toured the country as well. All throughout Western Canada the stop signs had two lines: “Stop” and “Arret”. As soon as we got to Quebec, the signs said “Arret”, then “Stop” and almost everything was in French and NOT bilingual. Their canned goods were bilingual and all the French labels were turned toward the customer.
Similar in the New South. I had worked in South Carolina in the ‘60s and saw a lot of demeaning discrimination that bothered this Yankee to the point I was glad to leave the place. In the ‘80s, on my first contracting job, I was sent to Macon, GA and braced myself for more of the same. I was stunned at the change - the white media and political structure fairly GROVELED at the blacks feet. I worked there five years and noticed, once it was pointed out to me, how whenever a black gained a supervisory position, no white person was EVER hired again and gradually the offices would become mono-color. There was a lot of “I’m on top now” attitude and the whites toadied up to them at every turn. Another sigh of relief on leaving, but for different reasons.

A great read, highly recommended to you and to anyone else reading this.
Derbyshire isn’t a writer I’d feel comfortable defending, but on the other hand, his particular piece, while written provocatively, was an excellent parody of the recent “what black parents tell their children”.
It has been a vicious racist thing — smearing all whites with some collective guilt and perpetuating black hatred and entitlement, making black children both fear and loathe and hate and in many cases feel justified in physically attacking whites.
Derbyshire took selective statistics to show that white parents could much more rationally and justifiably warn their children about associations with blacks — and for that, he was fired.
I assumed he said something that wasn’t pro- Romney.

Derbyshire doesn't do the really obvious racist stuff -- the stuff that goes up at FreeRepublic.com, for example -- like post photos Obama in stereotypical tribal garb with a bone through his nose.Hard to argue with that one.

I think you are confusing Derbyshire with Theodore Dalrymple (former prison doctor.) Derbyshire is a very skilled mathematician.
Both are British.
P.S. Now labeled “racist” by NRO, Derybshire is married to a Chinese woman, the mother of his children. “Racist” is of course a selective term of abuse.
