The Right Flames the Volt
The New York Times ^ | April 8,2012 | JOE NOCERA

Posted on 04/08/2012 4:30:47 AM PDT by Hojczyk

It was Thursday morning and several dozen owners of the new Chevrolet Volt had gathered at a restaurant overlooking the East River. Across town, the New York International Auto Show was in full swing. The Volt, of course, is the innovative electric car from General Motors, and G.M. was using the occasion of the auto show to meet with Volt owners.

Between bites of eggs and bacon, the Volt owners gushed about how well the car drove — and how much gasoline they were saving. They were early adopters, of course, willing to pay a high price ($40,000 before a $7,500 tax credit) to get their hands on a new technology. Many of them had become nearly obsessed with avoiding the gas station; for those with short commutes, it could be months between fill-ups.

What is the connection between President Obama and the Volt? There is none. The car was the brainchild of Bob Lutz, a legendary auto executive who is about as liberal as the Koch brothers. The tax credit — which is part of the reason conservatives hate the car — became law during the Bush administration.

“It’s nuts,” said Lutz, when I spoke to him earlier in the week. “This is a significant achievement in the auto industry. There are so many legitimate things to criticize Obama about. It is inexplicable that the right would feel the need to tell lies about the Volt to attack the president.”

Tell me Mr Lutz, who is it that put the union over the share holders? Who is it that is wrecking the economy for a little bit of “green” innovation? And who is it that champions the O with their tribute, the Volt, at a price everyone can(’t) afford? Not to mention an infrastructure that could not support something like a volt if everyone was forced to buy it?... which may happen if the O gets a second term...

What's not to like about the Volt?

Each Chevy Volt sold thus far may have as much as $250,000 in state and federal dollars in incentives behind it – a total of $3 billion altogether, according to an analysis by James Hohman, assistant director of fiscal policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

---

Or how about this:

The Volt, which cost nearly $40,000 before a $7,500 federal tax credit, could take up to 27 years to pay off versus a Chevrolet Cruze, assuming it was regularly driven farther than its battery-only range allows.

“...go to the comments...they are the reason OBAMA may get reelected...”

Yup. 55 % to 45 %. President Obama in 2013.

Women; brilliant, intellectual, really-really smart Independents; Che-Guevarra lovers; lovers of Progressivism; racist voters; college students who gush about the living, breathing Constitution; hardcore union members, etc., will push Mr. Obama over the top. (Not to mention Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and all those zombies in the horror movies.)

IMHO

When I see an 18 wheeler going across country on one charge give me a call. Or a pickup which can haul my 40 foot toy-hauler definitely call me.

The author apparently missed the point. The “right” did not particularly like Bush and opposed government subsidies for “green” boondoggles long before Obama met a guy in his neighborhood named Ayers.

The “right” viewed Bush as a damned sight better than those miserable poseurs, Gore or Kerry.

The Right Flames the Volt

I was under the impression that one of the beauties of the Volt is that it's often self-flaming ? !

According to my calendar, Friday was the end of the 5 week shutdown of Volt production. Has anyone seen any news of the triumphant resumption of this abomination Obamination?

A reporter for Fox News had been prowling the auto show, asking nasty questions about the Volt.

No bias here.

Race card.
Victim card.
etc.

We have 300MM Americans. How can the small motivated Right - affect eh purchasing power of the Obama majority?

It will be like this from the media 24/7 for the next 7 months - lies, fabrications, etc. They know they have no credibility with rational people. They want the irrational vote.

Personal note.....

About three weeks ago as I was departing Knoxville in my Sprinter on I 40 east, in the center lane at about 74 mph, a car zipped by me on the right. It was a Volt! I accelerated to get a better view and to snap a photo but couldn’t keep up. Alas my van is computer regulated to a top in of 82 mph.

The volt had Tennessee commercial tags, unusual for cars and almost exclusive to trucks or vans. The Volt turned off onto I 40 toward Asheville and I continued along to I 81. Past the I 81 turnoff are the mountains and nothing much till Ashevile. The driver cruising in excess of 75 had confidence in his 40 mile range I guess because just past the turnoff there is neither gas nor juice

The Volt, of course, is the innovative electric car from General Motors...

No, it is not innovative. Perhaps the NYTs writers need a dictionary? Actually, the NYT needs a lot more than a dictionary if they'd like to be considered journalists but one small step at a time:

in·no·va·tive/ˈinəˌvātiv/
Adjective:

(of a product, idea, etc.) Featuring new methods; advanced and original.
(of a person) Introducing new ideas; original and creative in thinking: "an innovative thinker".

However, the volt uses fairly standard hybrid technology in terms of battery chemistry, being a gas-electric mix, engine technology etc. The only significant difference between it and other hybrids is the mix of gas/electric. The volt tips towards being primarily an electrical car with gasoline backup, while say a prius is primarily a gasoline car with electrical augmentation. More of an engineering tradeoff decision than any thing truly "innovative."

...Between bites of eggs and bacon, the Volt owners...

A not-so-subtle attempt to make volt owners sound like everyone else? I don't know anyone that can drop 40K on a toy car.

What is the connection between President Obama and the Volt? There is none.

Was he on the design team? No. Is he on the marketing team? H*** yes! hussein has been pushing "green" energy and using the volt as a poster child. We all know (now) that most of his green energy initiatives are mere fronts - slush funds to funnel political payoffs to cronies. The volt promotion he has done (and continues to do) is more of the same to the unions at GM. Is there a connection between the volt and hussein - you better believe it. hussein forged that himself.

question: i know rechargeable batteries not run down to near zero can develop a "memory" that when ask to go beyond the point they are normally recharged at, if it's say 50%, act like it's dead, the LAZY battery effect.

i wonder if this holds true for the Volt as well
