Affordable Care Act a leap forward for women
Bakersfield Californian ^ | April 7, 2012 | by Cate Edwards

The Supreme Court is again at the center of a highly controversial policy debate, having just heard arguments for the Affordable Care Act. There's been much discussion about the justices' supposed political agendas. I've heard fear-mongering about government takeovers and rumors of increased business costs.

But I haven't heard much about what's really at stake: the welfare of the American people -- specifically women. Women like my mother and the other mothers, wives, sisters and daughters who need preventive services to ensure that they are healthy.

Our Constitution was created to "promote the general welfare." So a court that strikes down the health care law would not only shirk its constitutional responsibility, it would unduly injure the welfare of American women.

My mother, using everything from blog posts to congressional testimony, challenged this country to translate the Constitution's focus on each American's welfare into health reform.

The Affordable Care Act has done more to expand women's access to health care than any other piece of legislation in more than 50 years. It allows women to make health care choices based solely on what is best. Without this law, women may not get the preventive care, early detection tests or cancer treatments that they need.

And it's not just these women whose lives could be devastated by limited health care. They are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives. Women can now get the health care they need to stay healthy and alive -- for themselves and their families.

That is promoting the general welfare.

I guess a barf alert would be redundant in this case.

Obviously, Ms Edwards is not a Constitutional scholar.

Remember, folks, there are schools that actually gave this writer a degree (in something that obviously required no intellect).

Health care can be affordable WITHOUT having it controlled by the government.

They know this damn well.

So tired of this women’s health care meme. They talk as if women are more important than men.

Best thing that could happen is to make Obamacare a major campaign issue.

Yes, Cate. The US Constitution was created to promote the general welfare, but you obviously don’t understand what that means. Hint: it doesn’t mean all individual liberties are squashed under an all powerful government that decides winners and losers. What you want is something more akin to the USSR instead of the USA, and you should know how that turns out. Let me sum it up for you: equality under the law, the right to keep what one owns (private property), and taxation only for public use, i.e. for things like roads and public buildings. That’s what creates and maintains the general welfare.

As a former resident of this city, I beleive this proves that even a newspaper in a conservative area can be liberal.

Depends on who is arguing against it on our side, now doesn't it?

It all about creating strife between different groups. That is exactly how the Democrat Party stays in power. It's all based on pure, unadulterated evil, like greed, envy, selfishness, and group identity. I wish I could say differently, but it works for them. It remains to be seen if President Obama can win by his direct and divisive appeals to women and minorities, but it's really the only chance he's got.

More and more women will be sent to their death through Obamacare than we can even imagine. Fewer doctors, fewer tests, fewer treatments will rule the day. Hasn’t anyone noticed how the system is already coming out to proclaim that we don’t need tests and treatments? Only reason to do that is to set people up for the stark lack of care they are going to get. If you are older, they have robbed Medicare to pay for stupid birth control pills and BS that people can already purchase for 9 bucks a month.

This is all about total control of your lives. Obama people who wrote this bill want to cut the population back. You do this with birth control, abortion, and death to older folks.

See it will now be affordable once people drop like flies. Maybe that is why all those generic caskets are stored around the country.

About time some idiotic GOP spokespeople get out there and make it really clear that Obamacare is a death sentence for all but those who run the system.

ALL of that edweirds clan loves them some baby killing... I stand against any of their evil and they should be shunned... their disease is worse than leprosy and cancer. An eternity of damnation awaits those that align with evil.

My question to this dimwit author is “How do you know what this bill will do for women, against women, or for or against anyone else? Did you read it? All 2700 pages of it?”

“Our Constitution was created to “promote the general welfare.” So a court that strikes down the health care law would not only shirk its constitutional responsibility, it would unduly injure the welfare of American women. “

There are so many things wrong with this statement it makes my head hurt. Liberals actually think like this.
