Why be hypocrites? Do you expect people to say wonderful things about him just because he died? People are entitled to their opinions. I remember when Molly Ivins died and from the thread on FR, you'd have hardly known she was a hateful old crow. Everyone was praising her. It was sickening.

As for Wallace, he was the first newscaster I ever saw on a black and white TV, doing morning or noon news updates for CBS. He was exceptional, one of the best I ever saw. Frank Reynolds of ABC was my favorite, never ideological. Wallace was every bit as good, but he followed Uncle Walter and Cousin Dan towards the far left and became a journalistic toady and fellow traveler. That is as kind as I can be. RIP.

Not only would he betray our nation’s Soldiers, he also said that if the “SHTF” and he was in trouble, he would hide behind them.

Sounds a lot like that Ayers loser.

He was one of those pioneers we can thank for the destructive, lurid, gotcha "journalism" of today.

Let's be clear. No one would have ever heard of Mike Wallace if he had not produced a product that found customers.

He and his brand of "journalism" put eyeballs on screens. Bottom line stuff.

But what do I know, I'm a n00b around here.

When I think the level of discourse here has hit bottom, here they come to dig it a little deeper.

FR used to be a lot of things. We used to be thoroughly decent, even to those who were not decent to us, on these kinds of threads. That was because of a shared sense of humanity. Whenever a DUmmie would start in with attacking FR, one could do a side-by-side of these kinds of threads and show the difference. Now, I’m not so sure.

I’ve read some biographical material on Murrow and he would probably be some sort of outcast if he landed in journalism today.

I mean that because Murrow’s trademark was a cigarette in his hand. Verboten.

And Murrow was into hunting and fishing. Edward R. Murrow killed animals and ate meat.

PETA would be picketing him if he were around today.

Hottelet was a reporter for United Press in Berlin who was jailed by the Gestapo, then sent back to the United States.

He worked for CBS after the US got into the war.

Howard K. Smith, one of the other Murrow men, who was a socialist and Keynesian described Hottelet as “conservative.”

Well I used to think so. It’s one thing to disagree with a person’s philosophy and even criticize their actions, but it’s smarmy, shallow and petty to do so on a funeral thread.

Many libs would disagree with posters on this forum, but would those FReepers want liberals trashing them on a funeral thread that their OWN FAMILY would read? Talk about hypocrites.

A poor representation for FR, at least on this thread.

That was because of a shared sense of humanity.

After Ajax went mad and had killed his own fellow warriors, the Greeks came to sneer at dead his body. King Agamemnon refused to bury him. But Odysseus reminded them all that, although Ajax had been his enemy in life, he would honor him in death.

Agamemnon
You, Odysseus—do you champion him against me in this battle?
Odysseus
I do, though I did hate him, when it was honorable for me to hate.
. . .
Agamemnon
Then do you truly urge me to allow the burying of the dead?
Odysseus
[1365] Yes, for I too shall come to that necessity. . . .

That last line is the humanity seen by Odysseus in the play Ajax, by Sophocles 5 c. BC.

Some seem to be confusing Wallace with Dan Rather. Mike Wallace's career stretched back to the 50's and the Edward R. Murrow epoch of CBS News. Until his later years he usually avoided overt expressions of bias and gave the impression of trying to be fair and honest. He also gave a few frauds and icons of the Left like Margaret Sanger some well deserved grillings. Dan (what's the frequency? and fake but accurate infamy) Rather did not / does not amount to a pimple on Mike Wallace's backside. I'd save my beer fest and graveside visit for Danny Boy.

I’m with you. I think what always made conservatives better than liberals was that we wouldn’t lower ourselves to the depths of depravity that liberals will. We’re better than they are and that comes with the ability to forgive even where it isn’t to be expected. That’s what makes us better people.

BTTT

Let me begin with my deepest condolences to Mike Wallace’s family and friends. It is always difficult to say good-bye to the ones you love and cherish.

I pray that God will forgive Mike Wallace for all his digressions in life and reward him all the good he did. Every man will be judged in the end.

I pray that one day I will one day forgive Mike Wallace and CBS for that particular 60 Minutes segment. To date I have not. That is my sin that I am willing to live with.

I do not think people become good simply because they die. I did express my condolences for his family, but he believed the socialist worldview and spread it into the minds of millions. EVERYONE EVERYONE EVERYONE watched 60 Minutes back in the day. He was far more influential than any president.

He did great harm to this country. The enemy today of conservative Constitutional principles is our liberal media. Who got us started? Wallace et al.

It’s ok to be truthful about the bad things he did. Very few on this thread are like DU. And since Wallace said he would let troops die to get great footage, if any of the military Freepers feel the need to sound off on that evil, I understand them.

If a guy dies who once said he’d rape and rob your daughter if he could, you’d not be praising him upon his demise.

If hitler had a grave, there isn’t anything disgusting enough in my body to lay upon it. He killed a lot of my family, tortured them for months first. Some things trump etiquette.

As a Catholic, it would be my sincere wish that everybody, no matter how evil they were throughout their lives, repented sometime before they took their last breath.

Even a "Lord Have Mercy" between squeezing the trigger and the bullet hitting the brain.

Realistically, I don't believe that most do. But the knowledge of who does and who doesn't is between them and God, not me and God.

Therefore, I cannot say, with certainty, exactly who is in hell and who isn't. That there are people in hell is a certainty. The names and (former) addresses of the residents are not a matter of public knowledge, though.

If I knew, for a certainty, that a specific person was in hell, I would have no problem spitting on his grave. But since I can't say for 100% certainty that a person is, in fact, in hell, I'll hold off on the spit until I get to heaven and have that 100% knowledge.

I used to watch Biography when I was a little boy way back in the 60’s. I remember really enjoying Mike Wallace’s narration and was fascinated learning about the lives of historic people who lived before I was born.I loved the show, it was more respectful and admiring of great achievers. Now, Biography is mostly a celebration of Hollywood garbage.
