Bakery protest turns violent after clash over cookies

A labor protest at a historic Seattle bakery turned violent Saturday and police were called when demonstrators clashed with patrons outside. More than 80 protestors from the Seattle Solidarity Network, also known as SeaSol, picketed outside of Borracchini's Bakery in the Rainier Valley as part of a planned protest against the owner, Remo Borracchini.

Hundreds of customers arrived in advance of the protest and launched a counter demonstration. Supporters wore red, white and green ribbons in honor of the bakery's Italian roots.

Fights broke out among patrons and protestors after a customer offered cookies to one of the demonstrators, a bakery employee said. According to witnesses, a female member of SeaSol hit the plate of cookies out of his hands then slapped him during an argument, and the man pushed her to the ground.

A spokesperson for SeaSol said the woman was punched in the face, but KIRO-FM was not able to corroborate that statement. She received medical attention at the scene, but no arrests were made.

Seattle Solidarity launched a campaign against the bakery after a former employee claimed she was not allowed to take breaks during her nine years with the business. They have threatened to increase their involvement if the bakery does not pay her $7,901. The group has provided three letters they say are from former employees who describe a similar work environment.

Remo Borracchini and current employees have denied the group's accusations. A store manager showed KIRO-FM surveillance video of the employee taking breaks.

LOL...the car in front of me nearly hit one, and it took off and flew straight up over the top of my car as I drove home from Easter at the in-laws!

SeaSol used to be known as ACORN, so it’s a valid assumption.

Either way, it’s the same old Alinskyites employing the same old Alinsky tactics.

I love the scene from Gone With the Wind in regards to quitting time.

Field hand:Quitting time!
Foreman:Who says it's quitting time?
Field hand: I said!
Foreman:I's the foreman. I say when it's quitting time at Tara.
Foreman:Quitting time! Quitting time!

Here's a link to that clip from the movie.

So, the lady took breaks (went to bathroom perhaps) and the company has security film taken of those occasions?

Do you have any idea who you are supporting in this?

I think we need more information ~ somewhere between gross perversion and stealing cookies is simply not narrow enough for fair debate!

Too bad the bakery doesn’t deliver outside the state. I think it would have done a heck of a business nationwide.

If she didn’t complain at year one then to do so at year nine invalidates her BS claim ..... she should have spoken up or made the complaint before she was fired for being rude to customers.

The owner of the bakery has video of her taking breaks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7leB1-U2eZw

This person is doing this as a vengeful act not as a victim of employer abuse IMO.

She was fine with it till fired for allegedly being rude and discourteous to customers.

I would think filing a law suit against these SeaSol protestors and the former employee for loss of income, liable and defamation of character etc ... would be warranted in this case.

My opinion.....

Turkeys do roost in trees. I was out in the yard the other day and had some male wild turkeys fanning, puffing around and calling nearby. Above my head, some females were about fifteen -twenty feet off the ground perching. Peacocks do the same. I have never seen them fly up, but I have seen them glide down to the ground.

Maybe if they had the black and white cookie this wouldn’t have happened.

Wild turkeys fly just fine.

It's the commercial turkeys that can barely waddle, let alone fly. They're bred for meat production.

They are more widely separated from their wild brethren than hunting type Labrador Retrievers from their show brothers and sisters (those dogs look hungry.)
