Newark Residents Miffed Over Bill from Whitney Houston's Funeral
By Connor Simpson | The Atlantic Wire 20 hrs ago
Newark residents are being left to pick up the bill for Whitney Houston's funeral, and, surprisingly, they aren't happy about it. The demands of the high-profile funeral attendees have left the city of Newark with a $187,000 bill for police overtime. Police acted as barriers between fans and the proceedings on the day of the funeral of the Newark native who drowned in February. Nearly 200 officers were posted to the New Batist Church on the day of the funeral.

I didn’t know she was a Batist?
Why do taxpayers have to foot the bill??
Bill her estate,Newark...she was worth millions. And since her death her estate is raking in millions per week in CD and video sales.
Good grief. I am so tired of paying for people who think they are better.
I hear she was a really Batty Batist!
Or maybe the poor soul, ex gospel singer should'a been guarded by muslim new black panthers ... THAT'S Baptistic, alright.
“I am so tired of paying for people who think they are better...”
If I remember correctly, wasn’t there discussions about Whitney being buried in $300,000 worth of jewelry?! Why couldn’t that had been sold to pay for such a funeral?
Not necessary.Let her be buried in $300K of jewelry.Just deduct the appropriate municipal fees from the million dollars a week her *estate* has earned since her death.Call it "the Micheal Jackson Effect".
Your idea of collecting from the estate is brilliant. I don’t think the town people should have to pay for this...
Send the bill to Christie personally. He wanted the flag flown at half mast didn’t he? He shouldn’t mind paying the bill.
Where’s the Simpsons’ HA-HA-HA! guy?
Drowned? In drugs?
I read she was beyond broke. No estate to bill.
Another reason to be against Chris Christie. I don’t understand why anyone would think the flag should be lowered in honor of a drug addicted celebrity.
Actually, it was closer to 1.7 MILLION dollars......
>>>Send the bill to Christie personally. He wanted the flag flown at half mast didnt he? He shouldnt mind paying the bill.
I was about to post similar sentiments...
That was my thought, too.
You would think so and I bet she wasn’t. The family would have grabbed that jewelry I would think.
No, I think the estate should be billed rather than the taxpayers of New Jersey.
It was within the governor’s right to declare flags at half mast.
The Newark taxpayers should just do their ‘patriotic duty’ and pay the funeral ‘tax’. Make old Joe Biden proud and remember-— its for Whitney and the chilrens too.
She was found face-down in a foot of hot water in the bathtub.
No big deal. I bet the city made plenty of money from their hotel/motel/rental car/airport parking taxes from all the people that came for the funeral that wouldn’t have visited otherwise.
Can’t really blame Whitney or any other dead celebrity when funerals have to be policed like this.
Unfortunately, since about the 1950s or so, celebrity fans have behaved like hysterical, screaming animals in the presence of their idols, in need of physical restraint. It isn’t the celebrities’ fault that people are like this now, its just the way things are these days. Decorum and self-restraint are not prized virtues any more...
If they want to "rent a cop", let them pay in advance or stay home.
You start with the 1920’s and Valentino’s funeral and bet even before that.
True, but I bet they didn’t leave 300,000 dollars worth of jewelry on her.
Is that true though or is it just one of those stupid myths that spring up around dead celebrities? Not that I’m saying it isn’t perfectly plausible...
What a waste. Why weren't those jewels given to the estate? What did her family and friends think she was, an Egyptian pharoh?
We buried my father with absolutely no jewelry. The funeral home removed the jewelry and gave it to my mother after a private viewing. If my father had had his way, the gold in his molars from dental work would have been removed. All we buried with him was a pecan wood cofin, a suit, and a pair of shoes.
The only jewelry that I have requested is my wedding band (it is thin and I figure the kids would eventually want their own). Any other jewelry will go to my girls (and hopefully granddaughters one day). I would rather it be passed on (and maybe they will think of me when they wear it) than to be trapped in a coffin. IMHO.
Send the bill to her record label & tell them to pay it.
“Why do taxpayers have to foot the bill?”
Considering that this is Newark, the “residents” aren’t necessarily the “taxpayers”. Some sections have taxpayers with a stake in the city (and a tax bill to prove it); a much higher number haven’t paid taxes since they were born (even the sales tax they pay is borne by us taxpayers anyway).
“NJ residents miffed over bill for Newark” - that’s more like it.
