LANCASTER (CBS) A Southland mayor on Monday condemned a recent decision by Los Angeles County officials to allow probationers and parolees to have access to taxpayer-subsidized Section 8 housing ahead of seniors and the disabled.
City of Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris leveled sharp criticism at the approval by the Board of Supervisors 4-1 vote on April 3 that he said unfairly disadvantaged those families who have been waiting to receiving housing benefits.
I am absolutely appalled and disgusted that the Board of Supervisors would allow felons to cut the line for Section 8 housing benefits, said Parris. People who have played by the rules, lead a clean life and have waited years to qualify for Section 8 housing now have to wait until criminals who are just out of prison take these valuable government-subsidized vouchers.
Supervisors Gloria Molina, Don Knabe, Zev Yaroslavsky, and Mark Ridley-Thomas voted in favor of the new policy, which also slashes the criminal history review period for drug-related and violent crime from three years down to two years.
Parris slammed the board for what he described as its apparent contradictory approach to public safety and welfare.
What is also amazing about the Countys action is that it seems to fly in the face of their other recent Board actions where the Supervisors were critical of the state in dealing with parolee housing issues, he said. The County has the unique ability to speak out of both sides of its mouth.
The mayor also pointed to the murder of a respected Lancaster store owner by a parolee as further evidence that the Board made the wrong policy decision.
Some of our hardworking families are going to be hurt and/or murdered as a result of this decision, Parris said. How can anyone say we are not in a war over how Section 8 is being administered in Los Angeles County?
Section 8 was designed from the start to destroy communities.
Hell, we have a paroled level 4 sex offender living in a brand new FEMA type trailer right outside the local DSS office here.
No landlord would rent to him as was there right under section 8. So the county is required by state law to supply housing for this POS.
Oh, by the way, he attacked and molested a six year old girl and was paroled from that offense.

When I saw the unit across from mine in my now-previous L.A. area condo list “For rent — Section 8 welcome” I knew the neighborhood was done for.
Thank God the sign came down when my unit was for sale — I sold it quickly.
I’m telling you. There is something in the water in California.
I’m not surprised by insanity anymore or any less by public officials. Sounds like a bunch of pigs fighting over a dead rat!
How can we tell that they have led a clean life? The criminal record check only went back three years, now down to two years.
NJ has a law that a landlord cannot discriminate against a tenant on source of income, specifically Section 8. Insane!
Section 8 is killing America.
Most angry are black that have worked hard to get out of the communities that section 8 is promulgating. I bought a road bike from a fella a while ago and that’s all he would complain about. He asked - why are “these people” (of his same skin color, but different work ethic) allowed to come in here are ruin where I live?
The Antelope Valley used to be the bible belt of California and was a great family place to live. Not anymore.
re: led a clean life
No, you cannot always tell, but in this case, convicted violent felons are going to move in line ahead of some people who are disabled. This is as wrong as it gets.
If Sheriff Arpaio were here, the violent felons would get tents. Keeping them out of the elements is as kind as I want to be to them. Some of them are going to be getting a 4-bedroom house with pool and only pay 20% of the rent.
Molina voted yes to help her illegal alien gang member pals; Ridley-Thomas voted yes to help his black gangbanger friends. I have no idea what Zev was thinking.
