WASHINGTON -- The government of Israel is again asking the United States to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, a former Navy analyst serving a life sentence for espionage.

But the White House said Monday its position has not changed, and President Barack Obama has no intention of releasing Pollard. Pollard was arrested in 1985 and convicted in 1987.

Democratic and Republican administrations alike have repeatedly refused Israeli appeals to release Pollard.

The latest request was made Monday in a letter to Obama from Israeli President Shimon Peres, who asked that Pollard be released on humanitarian grounds because his health has been deteriorating. Pollard has been hospitalized at a prison medical center in Butner, North Carolina, since April 4, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons said Monday.

With all the noise about Iran, it may not be a good time to make this request. Hope Mr. Obama holds firm in this case.

Had an unclass briefing from a DSS rep who said that Pollard was shopping his material around to countries other than the Israelis, as well.

Maybe the only good thing about having a president who is as anti-Israel as Obama is that Pollard is less likely to be released.

I can’t take it. Am I the only Jewish American who wants this dirtball executed? It would be hard to find a bigger supporter of Israel than myself. My wife’s entire family lives in Ashdod. We travel there at least every other year and yet I can’t understand Jews including my mother who want this traitor released.

What’s next, Russian asking for John Walker’s release? How about the Taliban asking for their American born traitors? It is beyond absurd.

He agreed to keep America’s secrets, not let him rot.

BTW, how could he have been sure he was passing secrets to Israel? Ever heard of a false flag recruitment? How did he know his contact had not been compromised?

this is the spy game

we tell our people that we will do everything in our power to get them released if they get caught, or else no one would volunteer

We also tell the world we will do everything in our power to never release one’s we catch, in order to discourage spying on us

Israel is just doing the same on their side.

That said, Pollard was not an Israeli citizen spying for lofty goals, he was a traitor for money- so they know we will not release him EVER so they can publicly display their wish for his release, knowing it will never happen

Obama could very well agree to such a release prior to the election in hopes that he will energize his Jewish base.

Anyone who knows the spy game knows that we exchange spies all the time, including citizens.

I’ve actually reached the conclusion that executions should be eliminated in the US with the exception of major espionage cases - and the method goes back to hanging. The Walker Family, Ames, Hansen, Pollard all get the noose.

Yes it is. I was involved in several swaps of spies and political prisoners on Glienicke Bridge in Berlin, including Natan Sharansky. It was pressure from Reagan that made it happen. And there were other prisoners/spies that were part of that swap on both sides.

Pollard is considerably higher profile, which makes it more difficult despite intense pressure from Israel for his release. There is a public square in Jerusalem named for Pollard, formerly Paris Square (Kikar Paris.) And the fact that Pollard was a US citizen complicates matters. Pollard renounced his US citizenship. Israel granted Pollard citizenship in 1995. So right now, we hold an Israeli citizen.

When Israel withdraws the pack of lies that it has maintained for 45 years about the Israeli attack on our flagged USS Liberty that killed 34 American sailors and Marines and wounded 170 others, and then apologizes, we can talk about the traitor Pollard.

Pollard did an exceptional job of confirming all the stereotypes about Jewish dual loyalties, etc.

Obama will release Pollard if Israel lets another 500 Hamas terrorists go free.
