Nakwon Foxworth, who allegedly shot four cops this weekend, had an awful arsenal (barf alert)
NY Daily News ^

It was illegal in New York, but thanks to lax gun laws in other states and Washington, the formidable weapon is a life-threatening commonplace in the hands of violent thugs like Foxworth.
He also had something much worse which he could easily have grabbed if things had played out differently. Cops found in his apartment a sawed-off Ruger Mini-14 military-style semiautomatic rifle.
This weapons killing power is well known. Sometimes called the poor mans assault rifle, the Mini-14 was reportedly the weapon of choice of Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian mass murderer who shot 69 mostly young people to death last summer.
The NYPD said the Ruger is so powerful, it could have pierced the ballistics shield carried by the first officer through Foxworths door.
A firearm this potent should be banned everywhere in the United States. No exceptions. But the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004, and gutless congressmen under the sway of the National Rifle Association have failed to re-up it.

We’ll stick with our pair of AR-15 rifles when the dogs bark in the night. My other option would be the M1A, but I think it is overkill when your range is under a hundred yards.
Your mileage may vary...

Before the boating accident, I had a Mini-14. If I had sawed off the barrel, would it have turned into an awesome killing machine? Maybe the .223 would have magically turned into an evil 50 cal?
Who knew?

The early 70s version Colt SP-1 I have is exactly like the original AR-15s shipped to the AF for Vietnam in 69. No forward assist or case deflector, semi-only...barrel has a 1/12 twist...slow turner - ammo tends to tumble once it hits vegetation. Meant to incapacitate the enemy forcing them to divert resources... I don’t know what an SS-109 would do with a ‘shield’ or vest, honestly. But, I do know what a 30-06 black tip will do.

Depends on the state. Here in WV, it’s perfectly legal to hunt deer with a .223.
But, I’ll agree to a total ban on firearms as long as there are NO government or military exemptions. NONE AT ALL.
Until then, the Goverment can FOAD.

I bought my first Mini-14 back in 1976 ($145.00) when they first came on the market. Nice rifle but needed lots of improvements.
Then you could not find one anywhere for several years as they were being bought by the French for their police force.

Cops found in his apartment a sawed-off Ruger Mini-14 military-style semiautomatic rifle.1. If it was 'sawed-off' it would've been wildly inaccurate. If it was shortened on a lathe it would have been a useful tool.
2. The only thing 'military-style' about a Mini-14 is that it chambers a .223/5.56 cartridge. Otherwise it's just a mild-mannered hunting rifle.
It is amusing to read propaganda accounts from the occupied socialist zones. They read like breathless dime store novels. Over the top ridiculous.

Isnt it ILLEGAL to use .223 for hunting? Not sufficient knock-down, or something? Depends upon the State, and the game you are going after. For White Tail Deer, Antelope and such, the .223 is on the small side, but legal in S. Dakota and many other states.
If I'm hunting Elk, Moose or larger animals, I'd want a larger gun. I hate inflicting pain, my shots are tyically 1-shot kills. If you use a larger caliber rifle, the odds of wounding the animal increase - as you deliver less energy impact into the animal. The end-game goal is to "stall the pump".

How about the Mosin-Nagant M1944 carbine (Chicom Type 53) in 7.62x54R as a REAL “assault weapon”? The cartridge can shoot through a lot of building walls, punch police ballistic vests with ease, and has a really scary permanently mounted folding bayonet to terrify the NYPD and NYC media pukes. Nakwon should have had one of these and he'd have commanded powerful “ju-ju” amongst Holder's people. Alas, Nakwon wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer and settled for the wussy Mini-14.

It used to be some states wouldn’t allow the various .22 centerfires on deer because of insufficient bullet weight and the light construction of bullets designed to blow up on small varmints.
Improved bullets give good terminal results on Missouri whitetails at modest ranges and the Conservation Department okayed .223’s and other .22 centerfires many years ago.
But the key is shot placement and range. I would never shoot a deer beyond about 150 yards with a .223 and would really rather not shoot one over 50 yards. The longer the range, the less velocity.
All the “power” of a small caliber, low weight bullet comes from velocity. All that shock stuff is gunwriter/ad copy BS. A bullet has to disrupt a creature’s central nervous system and/or cause a rapid drop in blood pressure via massive blood loss to kill quickly and humanely. Penetration is critical, and penetration is a more a function of velocity for lighter bullets than for heavier bullets.

For posterity, in case my posts there are deleted: ctd 11:37 AM Apr 10, 2012 The bigger issue is why, at age 33, Foxworth was not still in prison for his convictions for attempted murder, robbery and selling drugs. The problem isn't the availability of weapons, as most states permit ownership with few restrictions and suffer few incidents as a result. The problem is jurisdictions releasing known repeat violent criminals who will obtain and misuse weapons regardless of their legality. More relevant details at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2126869/Nakwon-Foxworth-arrested-taking-pregnant-girlfriend-son-hostage-Brooklyn-shoot-out.html#ixzz1reU2tiI8 ctd 11:10 AM Apr 10, 2012 "Sometimes called the poor manâs assault rifle, the Mini-14" No it's not; either you made that up or are gullible to someone who did. Mini-14s run $600 and up, and are not designed for automatic fire. They were legal in FL (and most of the country) in 1998; newly manufactured ones sporting scary but harmless cosmetics were, but pre-"assault weapon ban" ones were still legal for private sale thru most of the country including NY state. That this one was "sawed off" means the owner performed a highly illegal (unless he submitted the correct paperwork and $200 tax, in which case the BATFE approved the change) alteration after an otherwise legal purchase. He's facing 10 years in prison for that. This story is full of inaccuracies and hype. A 9mm pistol and a .223 rifle makes for a pretty paltry "arsenal"; these are completely legal - even normal - in most states, and those states suffer few problems as a result. And before you jump on that statement, consider that cars kill over 50,000 people per year (no, it's not "different" that's fifty thousand dead and you're not concerned).
