Rick Santorum Suspends His Historic Presidential Campaign, Begins Next Chapter

...At 2:22 p.m. the candidate stepped up to the microphone at the platform in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and announced that he was suspending his 2012 presidential campaign. To his right stood his loving and dedicated wife Karen - and her expression said it all. She is an extraordinary woman, a lawyer, NICU Nurse, author, mother and Rick's best friend. However, she is also a woman who shows her heart. Surrounding them both were several of their beautiful children.

Rick Santorum recounted the story of Good Friday in the Santorum home. He called it a "Passion Play of sorts". Their little three year old daughter Bella was hospitalized. She has Trisomy 18 and is a living miracle. She has also won the hearts of millions during this campaign. Her little smile and serene presence fills you with joy when you are with her. She is the little princess in that wonderful family. She is also one of the greatest witnesses to the beauty and dignity of every human life I have met.

Like millions, I rejoiced when I received word that on Monday night that Bella had been released and was back home. However, the Senator acknowledged that the latest experience had caused he and his wife to think seriously about the direction they needed to take. They spent Easter weekend in prayer and reflection. They made the decision to suspend his Presidential campaign around the kitchen table.

It was the same kitchen table where they made the decision to enter the race. They did so he said because they knew they wanted their children - all of America's children - to inherit a Nation filled with the promise that made America great. They knew that dream was threatened. So, they began what he called the "improbable run" of this campaign...

After the speech the political pundits immediately began to speculate about the implications of the suspension on the 2012 Race. In addition, they began what will most certainly become a steady stream of speculation about the future of this gifted and good man.

I do not think there is much to speculate about. This is not the last political speech of Rick Santorum. With this speech he simply suspended his 2012 presidential campaign. He also began the next chapter of his life of service to God and Country.

With the race down to Willard and Newt the best move is for Rick to call on Sarah and Perry, perhaps another to coalesce into a campaign for Newt. With the various factions of the conservatives and republicans coming together they can thwart the undercurrent of the go-pees presumption of Willard is the winner.

Picture Newt, Santorum, Palin and Perry together on a campaign stage beating up on Hussein Obama.

Willard’s mealy mouth approach will wither and fade behind the roar of the cheering crowds.

So, did he throw his delegates to Newt or is he simply going to let the race go to Romney? Why didn't he think about his family before entering into the race?

Also, I want all those FReepers who have trashed Palin for NOT entering the race to vent the same hatred they have displayed onto Rick for dropping out of a race he actually entered.

Rick Santorum and his family displayed the same grace and integrity today as they have throughout the campaign season.
I would never have been able to endure the vitriol from the Romney campaign that was heaped upon them.

The behavior of all things Mitt is an embarrassment to the GOP and to those who love our great country.
I hope the GOP-E crashes and burns after Nov, 2012.
They are unrecognizable as the Grand Old Party of Ronald Reagan.

If propping up Romney is your version of relief to begin now, “focusing on Obama”, you are in line for perpetual nightmares.

There is still a remote chance that we can send this Romney plague right back to the RINO GOP-E where it came from.

1. NEWT WILL NOT SUSPEND

2. CONVENTION UPSET

3. RICK THROWS HIS DELEGATES TO NEWT, NOT ROMNEY

Anything less is a coin with one side Marxist, and the other side socialist. THAT is hardly a win for the Constitution or the nation.

What, exactly, was “historic” about his run for the Republican nomination?

Everyone,

Offer prayers, from your heart, keep on, they don’t have to be
rote prayers.

The messages from Heaven say pray for the candidate who is most for life. At this moment, there isn’t one. Something
is going to happen to change the situation.

I haven’t been seen here at FR in a while. There is a reason for that. After Newt’s loss in Florida and the immediate (and bewildering) stampede of the Not-Romney’s to Santorum that followed, today’s events were a forgone conclusion. Actually, the script for this outcome was written long ago, revised with the Iowa outcome, and finally punctuated with Florida. I warned Rick Rangers many times that their guy would not get-r-done when it comes to being the one viable Not-Romney.

Today’s outcome was as foreseeable as the coming of tomorrow morning. That being the case, I had to take a break from it all. It was too predictable and too discouraging. I had to find other things to occupy my mind and to drown out the noise of daily politics. I’m still in that place. My motivation and enthusiasm was zapped back in January and it still is today. The name McCain keeps popping in my head. Visions of an non-energetic/unenthusiastic base/party for November appear in the crystal ball.

My passion for politics will have to remain on the shelf for an indefinite period to come. I don’t care to watch this. Any distractions will be welcome.

This attitude is why we never get drastic changes. Too many people give in and follow the pundits who are working for themselves; not working for us. You guys go ahead and go with Romney. I am going with Newt so at least we have conservatism- those ideas alive. After they anoint Romney ( a liberal), we all can say goodbye to conservative principles. If conservatives will not fight now, nothing will make them stand up and say no to the elite class and those moderates saying what conservatism is.

He did the campaign on a wing and a prayer. A classic underdog. If he had had the headline victory in Iowa, and had won in SC, he would have been Romney’s chief rival.

Why do you say that???? Newt has a 98% Pro Life Lifetime rating. The only time that he didn’t vote for something that RTL supported was when it was attached to something else that he couldn’t support. The bill was pulled, rewritten and he then voted for what RTL supported. As Speaker of the House, NEWT sent TWO Partial Birth Abortion Bans to Clinton’s desk. How can you say that there isn’t a Pro-Life Candidate in the race?

"Help me out, please. Why is Rick’s an “Historic Presidential Campaign”? Just asking."

Based on some stats I saw a couple of months back, I would be willing to bet that when all the figures are tallied, Rick's campaign will show a better $ to vote ratio than virtually any other primary campaign in modern history. That's not an altogether insignificant stat. While the cynics will say it demonstrates an inability for Rick to raise money, future underfunded campaigns, especially those going up against well funded opponents will study many of the positive aspects of the managment of Rick's campaign, as well as the mistakes he made.

Hello georgiagirl,

My godchild lives in Atlanta, he loves it.

Maybe “Newt” is the one, against all odds. The messages from Heaven never give a name. We’ll have to see.

I’ve asked and no reply, did Newt correct his grave error of saying life begins at implantation?

So Speaker Newt Gingrich is a pro-abortion candidate? Please fax me some of whatever you’re smoking, okay?
