Last Tuesdays Heard Elsewhere from The New York Times, A cruel Republican budget, promotes a very irresponsible ethic, namely a give me everything attitude. The United States cannot continue in that way if we are to remain a successful long-term democracy.
While people in the middle class typically tend to believe in an altruistic, fair-play agenda, citizens are unable to continue living beyond their means indefinitely. Im sorry, but if a person cannot afford good housing, medical care and enjoyable pastimes, then that person just should not have them.

Fine. Time to cut Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid. They are the main cause of these deficits. I won’t hold my breath as to any shows of support from the author of this piece or most on FR. Cutting government spending is fine & dandy till it involves THEIR favorite ponzi scheme.
Everyone needs to look at this!
This is the true crisis everything else pales into insignificance. And I mean everything including social issues! I applaud Perry for pointing it out indirectly with his comment that “social security is a Ponzi scheme”
Every time I see this I say “Welcome to Greece!”
Also it makes Ron Paul right!

The fools won’t understand until it crashes around them. Let it crash.
I hate to say it but this is B.S. The middle class is the reason we have these problems. The middle class -- us or our neighbors and family -- want entitlements but don't want to pay for them. And the middle class has the votes to vote out anyone who cuts their benefits or raises taxes on them. So we are stuck with borrowing or raising taxes on "the rich." Contrary to popular belief, the tax code has become way more progressive over the past 20 or 30 years. Half the country doesn't pay taxes. The top 10% pay something like 75% of all taxes.
Fine with me. Return what I've paid in and we'll call it even.

NICE wants everyone to get more benefits, hence more votes.
HARSH wants to avoid a future catastrophe.
This is why CA is a basket case as the voters are NICE to all, including union teachers-police-fire-prison guards. Looks like WI is going the same way.
The challenge will be for HARSH to convince voters that the risk of catastrophe is so great, that not ignoring it is NICEr.
Good luck with that.
Not possible. “Your” money has already been spent on current recipients. It’s called a ponzi scheme. Deal with it.
Abortion = the root cause
Evil = root cause of abortion
“I have met the enemy, and he is us.”
Of course it’s possible. Cut everyone under say 55 a check for what they’ve paid in and tell tell them they’re on their own for retirement. For those over 55 the program continues as promised til they die. In about 20 years the problem self corrects and deficits plunge.
And where does the money come from for this magic check?
Uh uh! Eff that! I’ve seen who wins. I want my entitlements!
“”Cut everyone under say 55 a check for what theyve paid in””
With or without the employer matching contribution? Isn’t that a weird word (contribution) to use for something that’s mandatory? Self employed people would get 100% of their own money and employees should get their share and the employer share.
Where does it come from? The money is there - just CUT, CUT, CUT. Start with WH travel/vacations and go from there....
Make the DNC repay the taxpayers for the cost of “o’s” travel/lodging costs in his campaign for reelection.
Make Edwards, Clinton, Kerry, Biden, Kucinich, Bachmann, Paul, and every other elected official (D or R) who has left the work they were hired to do in Congress repay their salary for days off the job while campaigning for higher office in the past 10 years...or 20 or 30!!
Oh! Yeah! That includes the days “o” took off from his job in Congress to run for President in 2007 and 2008!!!!
No, first we must cut all government lottery style retirement pensions, at all levels of government, from the city, county state and federal levels and this will include those already retired.
And then reduce the size of government at all levels outside military by 45 percent.
This we must do.
It's choking off the American private sector.
“Everyone needs to look at this!”
Of course, but it simply WILL NOT MATTER. Even most of the old people on this site would rather see this country go BANKRUPT than to lose ONE CENT of what they ‘paid into’ into Social Security and Medicare.
People will look at at that chart, but it will be on pieces of paper in the public square, as they soon won’t be able to afford a computer, the Internet, or even their own newspaper.
But they should still look at the chart, just so they know WHO TO BLAME while their kids starve.
It appears there is the ability to create an unlimited supply of Baraqqi/Bernanke "minibucks"
