Sometimes, media coverage of a story becomes a story in its own right. It happened with Occupy Wall Street this past fall. Now it is happening with the Trayvon Martin case, where an unarmed African American 17-year-old was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain who claims he acted in self defense.
Much of the European media coverage portrays the incident as part of a larger trend: what they seem to see as the pervasive and enduring problem of American racism. ....
European coverage seems to call out the racism in the Trayvon Martin case as a clear continuance of U.S. history. A Spanish headline announced that Martin's death has "reopened debate in the U.S." Multiple French summaries refer to Martin's "murder," rather than -- as mainstream American papers print to avoid controversy and to be legally consistent -- his "death," "shooting," or "killing." Most significantly, articles tend to connect Trayvon Martin, American history, and Barack Obama. ....
As Charles Hawley wrote in Der Spiegel immediately after the 2008 election: "America, many Europeans were certain, was far too racist a country to elect a black man to occupy the White House."
Now, this sentiment is popping up again. An article in Germany's Die Welt refers to "America's original sin is slavery, its daily scourge of violence." It also brings up the NRA. An article in Italy's La Repubblica also calls out the NRA, the "powerful gun lobby," and brings up "the fanatical alter boy from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum," as well as the so-called birthers.
As disparate as these different references may seem, there's a common theme. It's not just that Trayvon Martin's death involved racism, seems to be the European perspective, but that this racism is uniquely American.

It’s not about racism. It’s about NBC editing that tape a bit and picking a cute baby picture.
The European Press reads the American Press reports about this incident — which are already distorted like a funhouse mirror. They just feed it back to us with their unique anti-American horsesh— spin. The Truth has fallen off the edge of the world.
That’s one of the things I like about being an American. I don’t give a **** about anything the EuroPeons think.
EuroTurds judging Americans on the subject of racism. With their history?
Sanctimonious hypocrites. They have no moral right to judge anyone. Maybe, just maybe a mass murderer.
Sorry, Heather Horn. A little investigation (lol! I know, who does that anymore?) will show the Europeans have their own little racism going on.
Isn’t this the same group of folks who have engaged in mass genocide on the basis of race?
I assure you that Europeans are among the most xenophobic, racist people on this planet, and have a long and colorful (so to speak) history of this behavior.
This is a case of the pot calling...uhhh...well, never mind.
Exactly. They can get back to me on the racism thing after they’ve had their first “person of color” dictator. It’s a shame that one American bled for any of them.
“Isnt this the same group of folks who have engaged in mass genocide on the basis of race?”
Oh, and they had slavery too, even of their own people, but were too genteel to call it that.
The Europeans think they know all about America. In actuality they know very little.
After hundreds of years of religious wars and persecution and genocide whom ever presumes to speak for Europe should kneel down on that blood soaked soil and pray forgiveness.
Which continent killed tens of millions with Fascism and Communism, engaging in racial, ethnic, and religious cleansing last century?
They’ve haven’t done too well with assimilation or tolerance in the past half-decade of post-war economic refugees coming to their socialist welfare states.
How about what King Leopold of Belgium did to the Congo? Those Eurotwits can just STFU as far as I am concerned!
Y’all should email her.....go to the website and you can.
LoL! Germans lecturing us on racism! LOL!
Cortez came to the Americas to spread sweetness and light.
Europe is about to see increased islamic “tolerance”.
Europeans let their law enforcement leaders get away with looking the other way while Muslims rape the heck out of white natives, too. We are not quite the same. There were be a lot of dead Muslims in the US.
Tell me again - exactly why should we pay attention to the foolish delusions of ignorant EuroTrash “journalists”?
If I cared what superficial idiocies the European media belch forth about a country they understand from press clippings I might be hurt by this. As it is, it’s sort of amusing. Yeah, we get the narrative - if we don’t re-elect 0bama, we’re all racists, and even if we do, we’re all racists anyway. If the Europeans were in the least perceptive about the current American political cauldron they might notice how very tired certain of us are of this ridiculous charade, and wonder how many “certain of us” turns out to be. Actually, it’s quite a lot, if I am not mistaken. We’ll find out in November and maybe well before that if this campaign of insane hatred keeps up.
The real point is that it doesn’t take much to bring Europe’s patrician distaste for American republican government to the surface.
Europe is dead. The vultures are ripping the carcass as we speak.
Hey Germany, let me know when you elect your first Chancellor of Turkish decent, or when France has a President of Algerian decent, of the UK a Prime Minister of Jamaican decent. Then I'll care what you guys have to say.
These stories make me wanna puke! The news media keeps hammering at “racism” over and over, only to provoke more of it and write some stupid article. The object is for them to sell papers and stories.
“I assure you that Europeans are among the most xenophobic, racist people on this planet...”
Many pretend to be oh so tolerant until you mention gypsies and jews...
