WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO, April 10 (Reuters) - The Justice Department could sue Apple Inc as early as Wednesday over alleged electronic book price-fixing, while settling with several publishers as early as this week, two people familiar with the matter said.

The Justice Department is investigating alleged price-fixing by Apple and five major publishers: CBS Corp's Simon & Schuster Inc; HarperCollins Publishers Inc; Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group; Pearson and Macmillan, a unit of Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH.

A lawsuit against Apple, one of the parties not in negotiations over a potential settlement, could come as early as Wednesday but no final decision had been made, the people said.

What, did Apple think that they would be immune from the Fascist in Chief? American businesses, large and small, are the target of this anti-capitalist regime.

Amazing. This has to cause stress for the latte drinking, Apple zealots who tend to support Obama.

And, like the good commies they are, I fully expect Apple employees and executives to support Obama.

remember the story of Obama asking Jobs about bringing his manufacturing back to the US and Jobs tried to give him a lesson in reality?

O really doesn’t like reality

Yes....liberal Jobs is dead....Obama has no loyalty to Apple now. Apple has money Obama needs...that’s all there is to that.

Well if Apple hadn’t outsource production to China, perhaps Americans would rush to Apple’s defense.

Good luck with that, Apple.

Raising taxes is hard work. It involves amassing political support.

Shakedowns are much easier and unilateral.

Seems like Apple should have given Al Gore the boot from the Board and installed Van Jones instead. Jones' extensive experience in business would have been a real plus for Apple. ;>) That protection money would have paid a good dividend.

Google's been in the Obama crosshairs quite a while: google monopoly doj.

Ipad built in america would cost 4,000 due to our insane regulations, labor laws, enviro laws, etc.

Blame ourselves, not apple.

“Yesterday it was Microsoft today it is Apple. Tomorrow it will be Google.”

Ok, so you progressive business leaders pay attention:

Community organizers specialize in shakedowns, and are expert in that arena.

Barack Obama was, and in many ways, still is a community organizer.

Guess what’s coming to all profitable businesses that aren’t already playing ball with Obama?

Price fixing is bad because.... OK, I’m at a loss.

I guess there are no alternatives to Apple products.

OTOH, government enforced monopolies, like school prisons and the USPS are good.

The Clinton administration did the same thing for money. Fair share becomes extortion by the government....Jessie Jackson makes a business of this. Holder won't clean up his own department but will like Janet Reno, will carry the water bucket for Obama with no hesitation....he belongs behind bars for his brand of racism, cronyism, and crimes against the citizens of this nation.

I believe it is "media" (electronic books) they are accused of price fixing. Not their iGadgets.

This has to do with Media sold on iTunes.

No stalking. I simply wanted you to know when I used your name. Beats talking about you behind your back.

You threaten me, whine, and cry, then you’re surprised when I mention you? Why?

Not a personal existential threat, more of a banning threat. Not that I’m worried, but it did annoy me. I despise group think. Liberals live by group think. FR has been a place of intelligent exchange of ideas, not an echo chamber. If group think is required here, no need to ban me, I don’t want to be here.

Then let lawyers sue in a class action lawsuit on behalf of customers.

Personally - if I think something is too high - I dont buy it. I don’t run to Obama/Holder to sue a company because I think the prices are too high.

Its very simple. Either markets are free or they are not. Conservatives are usually believers in Free Markets.

A Market isn't "free" if their is collusion to fix prices between those folks who sell in that market.

If all the major publishers agreed to set a minimum price for a book then this is the very definition of Price fixing and the Obama admin SHOULD nail their ass to a wall.

While they are at it they should investigate the RIAA who have been price fixing CDs for years.

Last month there was a discussion of a WSJ article on this: U.S. Warns Apple, Publishers. That discussion focused on Apple and the publishers allegedly colluding to eliminate Amazon's $9.99 max price on eBooks. One company deciding on prices, even unreasonable ones, is legal. A company colluding with its suppliers to punish a competitor isn't legal.

Disgusting.

Really?
You either don't know the details of the case or are indifferent to the reasons price-fixing is illegal in the first place.

Even an idiot in chief and a stopped clock can be "right on" twice a day.

Shhhh.
Don't say anything. This is fun.

Watching the ignorants' knees jerking all over the place is actually entertaining.
A little learning is a dangerous thing, and most of the responses up to here are totally clueless about the actual issue.

Let me just go get some popcorn.
