Please help with typo in title: it should be “off,” not “of.”

There was an 8.7 on the other side of the planet today. If you want to see a ‘global’ view of Earthquakes, then go to

http://www.wolton.net/quake.html

Download the program (takes 2 seconds) and then just run it.

You can see patterns of activity like you never have before.

Sitting as I am, less than 10 km from the center of Tokyo, I can assure you I agree. I might even admit to a small whimper.

Sumatra yesterday, this today, and there have been a number of stories about recently discovered faults near me.

Oh well, can’t spend all my time worrying about Obama. :-)

I just checked, using EARTHQUAKE 3D and the Mexico Quakes are almost directly opposite the Indonesian Quake. I.E. it’s where the waves from the Larger quake meet on the opposite side. IIRC, it’s typical to have such a result.

why no edit button ?

Because you have endless opportunity to 'edit' your THREAD information, before you hit the POST button.

If users were allowed to 'edit' THREAD info, titles, etc., things would quickly spiral out of control.

The ADMIN MODS are very good at responding to a request to 'correct' a headline. IIRC, the fast/best way to do so is to HIT the ABUSE button yourself (meaning the 'poster' of the thread) and explaining your need in the abuse post.

Brandon is about 80 miles west of me. It has some fault lines associated with a coastal subduction zone and has frequent earthquakes but usually 4.5 at upper end. One of these days . . .

” The Oregon one was right on the plate boundary. “

I’ve seen somewhere (okay - ‘megadisaster’ doom&destruction shows on ‘History’ Channel...) that the Oregon segment of the subduction zone is overdue for a “Major” earthquake, 9.0 plus-or-minus....

Hope this isn’t a pre-shock for THE BIG ONE....

Apparently Cascadia had the big one around 1700 (records in Japan show a major tsunami that period).

The thing with quakes is that we don't know when they are actually due.

To: Uncle Ike

I hope not as well. The Juan De Fuca plate is relatively small but the subduction zone is long and could produce a pretty big quake and related tsunami. I’ve read that the last quake produced a tsunami that did a lot of damage according to Japanese records. The geologists have found evidence that it went considerably inland along the Oregon and Washington coasts. I particularly wouldn’t want to live in Crecent City, CA which is kind of like a catcher’s mitt for waves coming in from the Pacific. It was the only US city damaged in the recent Japanese tsunami. One overly curious man drowned when the wave washed him off a dock.

USGS has downgraded the MICHOACAN, MEXICO earthquake.

USGS also shaved off 6 seconds to mark an earlier beginning time for the quake as 22:55:10 UTC rather than 22:55:16 UTC as posted here.

Yep, I would suggest you get EQ insurance and make sure your evacuation plan and disaster supplies are up to date . . .

http://www.eeri.org/mitigation/files/CREWCascadiaFinal.pdf

has a scenario of a magnitude 9 EQ that you might find of interest.

A more recent factoid we’ve heard from these folks at the Department of Minerals and Geology is that the southern half of the Cascadia fault ruptures at roughly double the frequency of the whole fault. The last great earthquake was in 1700 and regrettably the Pacific Coast, particularly southern Oregon/N California is overdue for the next one.

These folks are out talking to communities along the coast particularly about tsunami dangers - if they come to your area, it’s well worth it to give them a listen.

I’m glad. When the gentleman from Dept of Geology and Minerals talked to us he basically said he was trying to get us good and scared so we can scare our friends and neighbors and be better prepared.

He said if the big one hits, areas may be cut off for a week or more (so be nice to your neighbors, as the cavalry is likely to be late). He talked about the likely staging for supplies being in Bend/Redmond for Oregon because closer to the coast, they won’t have undamaged facilities to stage from.

I think it is difficult for people to contemplate (me anyway) that something that hasn’t occurred in 312 years might happen at any time.

I’m in the insurance industry. We are more prepared and funded than Sumatra, but way less than Japan. It’s gonna be ugly when it happens.
