New York must require microstamping of all semiautomatic handguns —the criminals’ weapon of choice —that are made or sold in the state.
Manufacturers would etch a number on each gun’s firing pin, which would stamp that number onto the shell casing when the weapon is fired. Two years ago, California passed a similar law that has yet to take full effect.
If microstamping were in force, shell casings found at crime scenes would become calling cards —easily traced back to the gun that shot them and, therefore, to its registered owner.
The technology in no way interferes with anyone’s Second Amendment rights. Hunting rifles would not be affected at all. And why should a law-abiding handgun owner care if his or her shell casings bear an identifying mark?
Meanwhile, microstamping would give a powerful tool to police —who regularly discover shell casings that traditional ballistic fingerprinting can’t trace.
Up against these common-sense arguments, the gun nuts have gone ballistic in Albany.

A switch to using revolvers would make it moot also.
The flaw - of course - is that that the person that fired the weapon would most probably not be the person that purchased it. (Those of room temp IQ or above need no further explanation of how that might happen.)

Or just using a revolver instead of an autoloader. Liberals don't understand the first thing about guns.
And all of this is predicated on firearms being registered.
Guns are stolen and moved out of state all the time.
So to make this effective, that would mean every gun, everywhere would have to be registered.
That is not going to happen.

More political posturing. Actual implementation of the project has never proved to be reliable. Where cartridge cases have been collected in mass and databased, not one crime has been solved with all the expense.

Revolvers do not eject their fired cases.

Brass found at a crime scene is pretty weak evidence. I could pick up 10 kinds of brass at a gun range and drop it at a crime scene, leaving plenty of time to get out of town while they track down people who weren’t even there.
Why not pass al aw require registration and licensing of automobiles to reduce the number of theft, carjackings and DWI?
How about a law requiring all males over the age of 9, to register their DNA, so if a RAPE occurs we can track it to a person?
I would like a law that says all people running for elected office be required to take an IQ test, EEG and a drug test! The drug test should be bi-monthly!

The stated purpose of this law has nothing to do with why they want it. They want this because it will be a burden upon gun manufacturers and gun owners, further driving up the costs of owning a firearm.
Its a burden to require an ID to vote, but nothing is too much for the right bear arms.

Sure, the street thugs who commit all this gun violence use their legally registered, semi-automatic weapons, that were purchased in NY (despite the fact the NYC essentially bans such weapons) which would lead investigators to them if we only had microstamping. Also, a street thug would NEVER disable the microstamping on his legally registered murder weapon. /sarc
In the real world, thugs use guns that were stolen, bought from illegal gun dealers or from friends and fellow criminals or that were purchased out of state, often in straw purchases.
NYS recently repealed the CoBIS law requirng that samples of spent casings be sumbitted to the government with all gun sales, because in the over 10 years since in was implemented not a single crime was solved using this method.
Did the NYDN ever think that maybe if the thugs knew that law abiding citizens might be carrying guns, rather than being the sitting ducks that they currently are, they’d be less likely to commit gun crimes? Just think, the gun violence rate in “gun free” NYC and other such cities, could actually drop to the much lower levels found in areas that respect the 2nd Amendment.
It also might make sense to actually lock up violent criminals for an extended period of time, rather than letting them loose to rob, rape and murder.
I think the New York Daily News should change its name to the Fantasy Land Daily News.

lol, there are so many stupidities here. A. 5 seconds with an Arkansas stone and the microstamp is gone. B. firing pins are interchangeable-get a new one from the factory and the traceability is broken. C. I can see a HUGE market in custom microstamped firing pins. I bet the “F*** Bloomberg” model would sell like hotcakes.
A microstamping law would drastically raise the price of any new gun. But that is what they are after. The idea is not to do anything positive, but to create an interdiction to anyone buying a legal gun to protect themselves.
Why doesn’t Bloomburg do some positive things like nailing a guy to the wall who uses a gun during a crime? Let’s get practical and start punishing criminals instead of returning them to society to do it again. Treat criminals as criminals. Get serious about the penal system. If Bloomburg would do this, I’d back him. When he pushes baloney like ‘Microstamping’, I balk.

They understand this. They understand that microstamping will not solve a violent crime, any more than having a registered serial number on a gun is any good at tracking down a criminal. The legislation is not aimed at putting violent criminals in jail. It's aimed at putting YOU in jail.
They simply want yet another way to put you in jail when they want to. So when your estranged wife or girlfriend tips them off that you have defaced your microstamper, they can take you away and put you in jail.
In the NY Legislation they have "amends subdivision 6 of section 265.10 of the penal law to clarify that the existing class D felony offense of defacing a firearm includes the defacement of a microstamping component or mechanism of a semiautomatic pistol".
Disinterested outsiders could tell the New Yorkers that they can improve things by simply keeping the bad guys in jail longer ~ like 35 years longer!
Somewhere I remember NY OR NYC require the MFG to include a shell case with the gun for the same purpose as the micro stamp would be.

It isn’t about reducing crime. It is about further limiting 2A rights through increased costs, registering ammunition and/or firing pins, etc. They don’t want to reduce crime; they want to take away your guns.

Remember the Canadian gun registry program. It was sold as the same. It will solve crimes... Zero where solved. It also quickly grew to a massively expensive program.
I’m just guessing but I figure 75% plus of the gun crimes are committed with stolen handguns, or guns not registered to the criminal.

Nothing bigger than a Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle! (Chambered in .177) I would imagine. Anything larger is a high-powered sniper weapon.

Much easier way to ban guns that way.You get arrested for polluting the environment with used cartridge cases then your denied your second amendment rights because you committed a previous crime.
Duh!!! What’s to keep a relatively smart criminal from going to a range, picking up a few hand fulls of spent shells and leaving them at the scenes of his crimes, thereby framing one or more innocent people?
