ST. LOUIS — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says the United Nations should adopt a treaty giving everyone on the planet the right to bear firearms.

The GOP presidential candidate told the National Rifle Association convention Friday in St. Louis that the group has been too timid in promoting gun rights.

He could have shown more strength by saying that America doesn’t need the UN and that it is a corrupt institution that undermines our sovereignty.

Just a cursory look at the UN’s so-called Universal Declaration of Human Rights will show how frighteningly close they are to the “rights” that the USSR’s constitution (from 1936 and 1977) promised, while leaving big holes for the totalitarianism to walk through.

The UN’s joke of a document dates back to December 1948; the Wikipedia article on it shows Eleanor Roosevelt (one of its authors) holding up a Spanish-language copy. Really shows how sympathetic the most powerful in this country were to communism, even going back that far.

“Newt doesn’t get it. He should’ve said that the UN should GTF out of the US’ domestic policies.”

I couldn’t agree more.

What many people here do not understand is that many countries accept international treaties as superior to their own law. This is, in fact, one of their legal principles, and it’s what gives the UN and other such bodies so much clout.

So while the US may not need it (yet), since Newt was talking about the world, yes, it would help to have a UN treaty affirming the right to bear arms.

No one can “give” anyone else any “rights”, they can only protect them or violate them.

“....many countries accept international treaties as superior to their own law.”

.
And the US has sunk that low, too?

Without the US’ annual financial support since 1946, there would not have been a UN to badmouth us year after year.

So Newt Gingrich believes the United Nations has that kind of power and legitimacy??

Hey CW! That was a GREAT speech! (Mitten’s speech wasn’t bad- if only he could be believed) I’d have missed it if I hadn’t been on grassroots.newt & seen it/ the link, roll through on the chat. Providence!

Wonder if someone could help me remember which speech Newt gave (or several- maybe it was during one of the debates) when he *specifically addressed* reforming the UN, basically eliminating it’s influence over the US. It was quite a while back (January?).
electad(.com?) may have it. I’ll try to look for it.

They don’t get the ‘limited government’ or the fact that the power resides in the people not in the govt.

This is where Newt loses me... he is a globalist. The UN doesn’t make laws trumping state sovereignty. That said, I would crawl over burning coals to vote for him over what we are facing.

No, you’ll note that I said “not the US - yet.”

Like it or not, UN rights law is accepted as superior to the constitutions of most countries. The UN would NEVER consider the right to bear arms (that is, the right to defend yourself) as a human right, and I think Newt was correct to call them on this.

He’s not a “globalist” - he’s somebody who knows a lot about how other countries work.

I’m a legal translator and I translate documents every day from countries where UN and international law is given precedence over their own law.

We have not reached that point yet...although Bambi sure wants to destroy US law and have us accept “international law” ...but many other countries have.

So challenging the UN to adopt such a treaty - which would affect the Marxist countries as well - could be a defining moment. (All Marxist countries are anti-gun because they fear that the citizens might rise up.)

Newt said the UN should ‘acknowledge’ this God-given right.

Just the one amendment? Let’s see if we can get them to approve the whole thing as a model constitution.
