Unrest is simmering in some quarters of the Washington news universe regarding changes in the way the Department of Labor (DOL) manages its pre-release media lockups on sensitive data like weekly jobless benefits and unemployment.
For years, journalists participating in the lockups have shown up at DOL at the appointed time, then entered a limited-access area to receive the new data and prepare news stories for release as soon as official embargoes end.
But Carl Fillichio, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis top communications advisor, circulated a memo earlier this week to interested media informing them that everybody is being required to re-submit their credentials requests.
Fillichio reminded participants that there are only 20-30 seats available for the lockups and that priority will be given by DOL in selecting participants to those that are primarily journalistic enterprises.

did you vote for Obummer? or do you just hate Romney?
An argument can be made that this is a good move. The stock markets move based upon the unemployment numbers. If anyone gets the numbers in advance they can potentially benefit financially. The administration cracked down a few months ago on certain state governors getting advance notice of the numbers. The democrat governor of North Carolina was among those mentioned in that crack down.
They may be playing games with who they let into the room, but the operational security is actually a pretty smart move.
so is this story about China ?
And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
They want to control who gets the fraudulent numbers first?
Why can’t the Department of Labor just release all the statistics and all the relevant DOL commentary at a predetermined time on the DOL website?
Why should selected journalists or selected news organizations have a reporting advantage over anyone else?
Your proposal is fair and efficient.
It also deprives Obama of his margin and ability to give Chicago “favors” to people who play the game for him.
Ergo, not going to happen.
Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the most recent unemployment number as (insert x.xx) percent. In contast, Gallup Polls announced a mid month unemployment estimate of (insert Gallup number here) while many other experts felt that federal unemployment numbers were low by 2 percentage points.
I don’t trust anything the DOL is doing. It is the most activist, socialist, over-reaching DOL of my lifetime. Google Middle Class Task Force and keep your tinfoil hat ready as you start down that road.
So does this mean now that the lying, filthy media will now have to post the real unemployment, jobless claims, etc. data and reveal what actual trainwreck the Kenyan has done to this economy?
True. The spread of wifi, “cloud”, and smart phones which themselves are just small computers add to this being a good idea to prevent market manipulation. There is also good indication that such manipulation is actually happening and needs to be prevented. This idea, however, doesn’t contribute to the consistently sinister narrative that some people seem to require.
Why not lock them in an RF-proof room?
It’s a matter of control. It doesn’t matter what they control as long as they can control it.
Also, trying to control the release of manipulated numbers, to manipulate participants that try to write and manipulate public opinion, tells me the near term unemployment numbers are going to be really really bad.
Wow, that move was “unexpected”!!!
This is cheaper, requires no expensive equipment or installation, and SEEMS just as secure to the average computer user.
The average computer user also clicks on emailed links from Namibian princesses so the actual mileage of this security may vary.
