SAN ANTONIO, TX -- Three years ago he was merely a face in a very large crowd, standing outside the Alamo on Tax Day as Glenn Beck spoke of drawing a line in the sand.
A businessman, husband, father of five and grandfather of 14, Bruce Baillio bought a miniature "Don't Tread on Me" flag and watched, a little sheepishly and mostly silently, as a movement was born before his eyes. Like most of America, he didn't know then what the tea party was.

"I think we realized that just getting together ... and yelling and screaming wasn't going to do anything," says the 52-year-old Angius. "The best thing is to get involved at the local level in the party. Move the local party to the right ... and then the local party will move the state and then the state moves the national.
"The tea party was an idea that people like me, who came from nowhere, could get involved ... and you can really make a difference."
Don't forget me when you're famous. Well, more famous.
I don’t think there is a tea party anymore.
I was at that Tea Party event!! Our maintenance folks had our conference about 10 blocks from the Alamo and we got out early that day. What fun we had there. There were American, Texas, "Don't Tread On Me" and "Come and Take It" flags everywhere.
Way to go, Hildy! Kick butt!
I'm so happy to hear you are doing well. Keep up the good work! :-)
Did you join one? If not, therein lies the problem.
Retired at 52? Good for you. If this economy doesn’t pick up, I will be retiring at 98. LOL.
” dont think there is a tea party anymore. “
The problem is that, what started out as a MOVEMENT of individuals that cut cut across Political Lines and Identifications, has been shoehorned, by the Media abetted by any number of persons (using the term very loosely) purporting to be ‘Leaders’, into the comfortable mold of a monolithic, lock-step, PARTY - a poor-cousin (or ‘crazy uncle’, if you prefer) splinter of the Pubbies...
They’ve even taken away our CAPS and periods — Tea, as in a ‘weak beverage’, instead of T.E.A. standing for Taxed Enough, Already!!
A couple of months ago I went to the 912 Project NJ boards to see what was up.. There hadn’t been a new post since 2010.
I don't want to be famous.. I just want to win my election because I believe I am the best one for this job. I am running against an 80year old Republican who has forgotten he is a Republican. if you want to help me, please visit my website and make a donation. it is so expensive to run a campaign. Hildy For Supervisor FreeRepublic helped me be the person I am today. I can't think of a better way to repay that than to keep Conservative government alive against the onslaught of liberalism in my local government. Thank you.
“I dont think there is a tea party anymore.”
There is. Unfortunately it is trapped under the carcass of a big, dead, elephant that just keeled over onto it. Lift the elephant corpse away and the Tea Party will be freed. Leave the dead elephant in place much longer and the Tea Party too will suffocate and die.
Retired at 52? Good for you. If this economy doesnt pick up, I will be retiring at 98. LOL.

My wife recently asked me where I wanted to retire. First I just boggled at her, then I laughed and laughed.
Good luck in your bid, Hildy. I will check your links.
If you don’t get involved; you won’t win. We need to stand up and quit letting the Left choose for us.
Bring back Duncan Hunter.
Our Tea Party is alive and kickin' here in Florida !
What was the tea party? it was an idea..and idea at we can get back to the values that made America. You don’t get there by having demonstrations and ranting and raving. That would make us no better than the Occupiers. The real Tea Partiers knew, like I did, that you have to be in the system to change the system. I have been working hard towards that end, I love the Republican party, I make no bones about it. But this is not 1980. But we are working hard behind the scenes. I could write a book about what I’ve learned in the last three years involved in AZ State politics. Politics is not for the faint of heart.
“I dont think there is a tea party anymore.”
They had faded from public view by 2010, but I’m sure they played a part (as individuals and small groups) in handing the Dems’ asses to them in the mid-terms. Part of what attracts people to the TEA Party idea is that there is no “establishment”; they are localized groups born of a tax revolt that probably plays a more important role on the state, county, and municipal level than the federal one.
The mindset is certainly out there (especially since the expiration of the federal “making work pay” credit just added hundreds of dollars to many peoples’ federal income tax bills). I don’t doubt that the TEA Party will play a key role in 2012; it spoke for many independents.
We differ on whether the GOP can be or is worth salvaging. We agree on the ideas the Founders held on ordered liberty, and the tenacity and indeed vitality of those ideas.
We’ll see how things pan out this November, and speak again then. Meanwhile, in all sincerity I wish you every success in your endeavors.
Good summary.
If you add up the votes for Gingrich and Santorum, they amounted to more than Romney's in a lot of the states that have voted already in the primary. Unfortunately, the Tea Party seems to be divided between those with Christian values who wholeheartedly supported Santorum, and those who are purely financial conservatives like those who wholeheartedly supported Gingrich. I myself supported Santorum mostly due to his unwavering stance against the global warming fraud. But if reading FR threads is indicative of the trends in the Tea Party nationwide, a lot of Gingrich supporters hated Santorum for his Christian beliefs, calling him Saintorum, cultist, etc.
The Tea Party is strong but there is a strong divide that exists and can be exploited when there is a choice between two types of conservatives.
I don’t mind. I will be 53 next Sunday. I earned every day of it,
The Tea Party was about fiscal issues. That is the one ing we all agree on. it’s the everything elsemthat trips us up. We do not all agree on social issues... And we never will.
Thank you.
Thanks; that is how I’m seeing it shake out so far.
I believe as the election nears we’ll start seeing the large demonstrations again; there is no shortage of good material for the signs being held up.
Yeah. No Doubt. Over 40% of all American voters and their lifelong, deeply held convictions have all just disappeared.
Just kidding. If you doubt that The Tea Party is still here, let's discuss it after the November elections. If the Dems win back the House, or keep the Senate, then you might be right. On the other hand, if we strengthen the House Majority and take over the Senate, it'll pretty much prove that we're still right here, biding our time, watching the candidates with a microscope.
We may mot be at a meeting and screaming as you say but we are out here, motivated and trounce at any provocation. We are turning Ol Saul right back on them. Every time this week Nobama tried one of his tactics he was throwing someone under the bus. The Tea Party is alive and well!!!
See # 27; I believe they will hold demonstrations again as the election nears. The TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party grew as it did by skirting the conservative/liberal debate (I remember when they avoided getting involved in the “gay marriage” issue); they are an anti-tax, anti-”big government” movement (and who would argue with that platform except the parasites drawing from the government?).
How can their be fiscal morality without the advise of God?
their = there...I hate it when other people do that!
advise = advice also...I must’ve been in a hurry. sigh
Says you. I'm a part of the Tea Party, as are all my friends and most of my family. We haven't gone anywhere. It was The Tea Party bigshot who made headlines two days ago warning Romney not to expect us to campaign for him. You must have missed that.
"One would think the 2012 election would be in the bag for anyone running against Obama. Yet, where is hue, cry, and outrage against the Ascended 0ne."
Try reading the Tea Party Tribune online. Or FreeRepublic, for that matter. Or any of the thousands of anti-Obunghole articles and threads posted here every week.
Are you predicting an O'Bunga win in November? Guess again. Nobody expected a huge GOP sweep in November of 2010, either. That's the thing about a "Silent Majority." They're "silent." If you're not really observant, you won't even know they're there.
;-\
RIGHT!!! we’ve got one here in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio tomorrow— Tax Day. We need everyone we can get. Quinn and Rose will be there along with Joe the plumber, and a host of others running for state and federal elections. Y’all come!!!!!! starts with music at 2 and speakers at 3. River Square in CF
Hope you get a good turnout, and good weather!
I stood with a million people in Washington DC In front of the Capitol and demanded that they not pass Obamacare. Excuse me if I don’t think these demonstrations do a thing. So we got busy... And now we have an opportunity to affect local government. one more time, you must be in the System to change the System.
The Ascended one? HE WON by votes of Republicans.
I agree with you on this one. NOthing demonstrated that more clearly in my state of Missouri than the switch to a caucus. Many people showed up at the caucus to “vote”, but the people who were on the slates were the “worker bees” who have worked very hard in our county. If you want to do the work, you can be part of it and influence the way things go. Rallies are nice, but the grunt work is even more important.
Get involved in your county!
You described what happened to TEA Parties to a T.
To both the RINOs and the Pretender leaders chagrin, we are still all here when the right time comes.
I, too, was at that event. I worked setting up the overflow site at the entrance to Hemisfair Park. But I had to make my way to where the action was...what a day! If I ever get the time, I have some great footage to post.
I went there with about 10 other TX NG maintenance shop supervisors and we all had a beer in hand and one in a pocket. I really wanted to have a big US or Texas flag, but all I could find on our walk was something like a 10 X 16 inch Texas flag.
We all had a good time. We were all surprised at the turnout. There were people of every color / race there and not a single protester. No trash was left after the event either.
I didn't read the replies on this thread until a few minutes ago. We have three or four TEA Party candidates running in TX District 25 to replace lord dog nuts in Congress. It is now a 60% Conservative district and most of Austin is out of the picture, which should make it a easy pickup for our side. Texas got four additional congressional seats since 2010.
It never hurts to try. When my grand children later asked me why I didn’t try to stop the dictatorship I can at least tell them “I tried to”. I think those T E A parties did some good and helped us get some conservative congressmen.
You got that right!
You got that right!
