Lot of Vancouver residents live between the Best-Buy location and the bridge. And there is a Best-Buy store only 500 yards from the bridge in Portland. So in my case may be 5 miles extra driving to shop in Portland.

Same thing happened to my favorite golf store in Vancouver...they cllosed because they could not compete with Oregon stores with zero sales tax versus 8.5% sales tax in Vancouver. When you consider cheapest name brand driver costs around $300, there is a $27 penalty in Vancouver.

True story, happened to someone I know.

Guy orders $2,000 big screen TV from Best Buy, told he would get it in 3 weeks. Superbowl was 10 days off, so he pushes and gets them to agree to deliver it in 7 days.

7 days later, they bring the TV, and he directs them to bring it downstairs. 2 weeks later, they deliver ANOTHER TV, so he plays dumb, and directs them to bring it upstairs.

This happened years ago. He was only billed for 1 TV, and they never called back to correct their mistake!

“Amazon is hitting them hard, I’ve read.”

Not a fraction as hard as Obamacare is going to hit them.

Best Buy is dying because of the Internet,

Not the only reason and like Blockbuster a more convenient model could have saved them.
Personally, the reasons I buy online retailers is not because of taxes. Convenience does it for me. I buy for a good price and convenience.. not because I save sales tax or not.

Happy to see none of “my” stores are on the list. I love Best Buy. I don’t like buying expensive electronics by mail.

What do you think of Sony Vaio’s? Ive never owned one before so I figured I’d try something new.

I have heard good and bad about them through the years. My friend has a 17" HP laptop for a year...it has given him no problems. My family has bought from Dell refurbished and done OK. Dell warranties are good with at home (they come to you) service. You don't mail your computer to Sony which I think is the case with them. I could be wrong and maybe a place like BestBuy will repair it in their store

  1. 500gb hard drive or less might be OK for you. The only reason to have large hard drives is to copy DVDs onto them for later viewing or to copy home videos onto them. Though blue ray movies can take up 25gb space I am told
  2. 4gb memory is good enough for a secondary computer
  3. 6gb or 8gb memory better for a primary computer
  4. I open up lots of Firefox and Chrome windows & tabs and find 8gb much better for that    (I upgraded my desktop from 4gb to 8gb)
  5. Intel Core i3-2350M Processor is good enough for the internet and "Office" applications and most other things
  6. But get i5 if you like......
  7. make sure you get the second generation of i3 or i5 (most new laptops will have it but doublecheck)
  8. just my thought

The online CC is not the same as the now defunct CC that went BANKRUPT in 2009. They just bought the domain name........

I wont be purchasing the laptop from Best Buy since I just checked the prices and nothing went down so I think I will just buy it from TigerDirect..they offer a warranty through squaretrade, two years, 159 bucks including accidental damage but I dont know anything about squaretrade, how reliable is their service? TigerDirect told me that if anything goes wrong with the laptop squaretrade will either send me a check to purchase a new laptop or just replace it with a brand new one(If its still being made) but I will contact them to get more info about their warranties
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+14%22+VAIO+E+Series+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+640GB+Hard+Drive+-+Charcoal+Black/4700747.p?id=1218509228687&skuId=4700747
that is the laptop I am planning on buying, except I am getting it from TigerDirect for 619-20 dollar coupon, free shipping, no sales tax..what do you think?
Oh and I will be upgrading the memory too, will be purchasing a crucial 4gb memory card for 19 bucks so it will make the laptop 8gb instead of 4

More later but dig deep and find out if the 4gb memory it comes with is 4gb in one slot or 2 x 2gb cards...... a 2gb memory module in each slot. If the later you will be buying 2 4gb mem modules to reach 8gb

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1814905&CatId=4938 >>>>>>> Seems to indicate you get 1 4gb memory module w second slot empty for another 4gb module

Is the keyboard back lit? That’s very nice when spending big money

It comes with “1” 4gb of memory, and has another open slot so I can put in whatever I want..so what I was planning on doing was upgrading it with another 4gb to make it 8gb in total..I called TigerDirect and they told me that I would have 14 days to return the laptop if it was defective, and they would send me a new one, but I CANNOT return it if I dont like it..is that the way it is in all stores, that if you buy an electronic item and you dont like it you cant return it(Or face a restocking fee like best buy charges)..I just wanted to be sure all stores pretty much do the same thing

Oh, and its NOT backlit, something I dont need anyway..I hear that the backlight keyboards offer nothing but problems anyway, and its a battery drainer so its not something that I need

I recommend that you review some opinions on customer service and warranties for TigerDirect before making a decision. I did, and went elsewhere.

JR.com offers free shipping/no sales tax, and they price match so I think I am going to go with them(Will contact them tomorrow) they offer returns on anything up to 14 days I believe, no questions asked..I wouldnt want to buy a laptop, not like it and be stuck with it. I guess every company has their own policy

J&R is a New York retailer that has been around forever. I have not dealt with them. Someone else here suggested Newegg, about which I have read good things. There are lots of opinons on the Net on customer service for all the online retailers. Just Google a few of their names together and you will come up with threads on the topic. Narrow it to the last year to make sure you are up to date. Good luck with your purchase.

Years ago I went to BB to buy my daughter a laptop for school. They have a hardcore sales policy. Very aggressive sales tactics. Skippy behind the counter had a whole stack of cables and anti-virus software that he told me went with the computer. I laughed out loud. Then there's the badgering about the extended warranty. I NEVER set foot in a BB again. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did.
