Several days after state Rep. Russell E. Holmes (D-Boston) pleaded for EBT card reform at a State House press conference last week, he was hit with another reminder of the deep flaws in the system.
Holmes was at the Roxbury Stop & Shop by Grove Hall last Sunday when someone approached him asking if he wanted to buy the mans EBT card.
His price was 50 cents on the dollar, Holmes said. Its not a surprise to me.
Holmes has spent the last few months on an EBT card commission trying to reform the system.
Its something thats prevalent, Holmes said. It was ironic that in a week where I had gotten a significant amount of pushback from advocates, saying not much of this is happening, Im at a store less than 15 minutes and see someone asking many people if they want to buy food stamps and use their EBT card.
Holmes said he was encouraged to see so many others turn the man down.
I think thats exactly what Ive heard from the community, Holmes said. Many of us are frustrated by the amount of abuse happening with the card.
Holmes is taking a strong stand against EBT card abuse, calling for efforts to add photos to the cards and tighter restrictions on where the cards can be used.
What were most concerned about is folks being able to use the cash to do the worst things in our community to buy more drugs, more alcohol, to gamble, he said. These are the things that hurt our community the most.

Amazingly the guy's a Dem.

All kidding aside.... It’s nice to see a “D” actually understands the problem with abuse in the EBT system and how it affects the people enslaved by it....
He is (GASP!) asking for IDs?
Buy a membership at COSTCO and they ask you to sit for less than a minute and voila! you have a card with your pic on it. Same can be done with EBTs, but watch the "disenfranchisement" Hue and Cry erupt when that is proposed.
Hey, you gotta start somewhere. A couple of years from now, EBT reform as the first step of an implementation of an economic version of Rudy Giulani’s Broken Windows Theory might be seen as a turning point.
Mass., prime example of EBT card abuse, where a woman using a stolen or “bought” EBT card buys a bunch of soda at a store.
She then takes the cans STILL FULL OF SODA and attempts to redeem them at a machine in the store (heavily damaging the machine). Gives fake names and social security numbers. And
EBT cards are being used to buy a lot more than just soda.
And...

(MA Dem gov Deval Patrick, aka Barack Jr., was re-elected
in 2010. He is not running for a third term however.)
He sees the end of their gravy train that is busting the wheels on the taxpayer rails. He knows their free ride is almost over and he is trying to prolong it.
Hey now, this crap is starting to get out of hand. The next thing you know, they'll require ID cards to vote!
Wouldn’t happen in MA of course. Anyone can get to my polling place and give my address and name (taken from phone book or whatever) and be given a ballot. When I show up to cast my
vote I would be told “sorry sir, it says here you already voted”. Requiring ID, or photo ID, would be RAAAAACIST!
The truly lavish balances bestowed upon many is a problem as well.
I'm acquainted with a woman, with four minor children at home, whose monthly balance is $1,500.00.
No Mooshellian food desert there. You want to know the source of such startling obesity statistics among the poor, start looking at EBT before launching into some weirdly yuppified statist program forcing arugula and pilates upon an unwilling lumpen proletariat.
They're fat because they're awash in food, with apparently no oversight. They're fraudulently selling excess EBT balances because they can't eat it all. That is the distinct impression I've gotten.
Yes, it is nice to see some semblance of awakening. But how long will it last, and what is to become of it? And why are the Rats so thick-headed as to refuse to see the obvious? Yes, most are in it for themselves, but there are those few who really are naive, bordering on stupid.
I’ve had “people” ask me for my shopping list here in the Cleveland/Akron area. They’ll get your stuff, then take 50% in cash,

Sell the card on Sat, report it lost or stolen get a replacement.
I've seen it. Meats on sale in particular seem to be the target of this sort of behavior. Whether they're reselling immediately, freezing it or what, I don't know. But they do descend upon it.

Wonder what he thinks of voter ID laws?
