‘Don’t Let It Fester’: Romney’s Tax Return Delay Could Bode Badly [six-month extension]

NEW YORK) -- After President Obama released his 2011 tax returns Friday, the pressure has been mounting for his Republican rival Mitt Romney to do the same.

The day after the president put out his tax information, Romney filed for a six-month extension on his own taxes, a move that Wall Street Journal editorial page editor Paul Gigot warned against Sunday during the “This Week” roundtable. Gigot cautioned Romney not to “let it fester.”

“I would have gotten the tax returns out three or four months ago or six months ago or a year ago,” Gigot said. “I don’t think you want that to be the focus of the argument.”

.....Romney campaign adviser Kevin Madden pointed out that the likely GOP nominee has already disclose d his estimated income for 2011 — about $21 million — and completed the “exhaustive” financial disclosure forms required for all presidential candidates.

“I think the more important debate that we’re going to have is about what we’re going to be doing with the American people’s tax dollars when we get to Washington,” Madden said.

Ed Gillespie defends Mitt Romney.........."The former Republican National Committee chairman, who recently joined the Romney presidential campaign as a senior adviser, also defended Romney for not releasing decades worth of tax records, saying, “This is a classic attempt by the Obama campaign to try to distract” from more important issues.

“He has complied with all of the disclosure laws; he is going over and above the requirements of the disclosure laws … in releasing two years of tax returns,” Gillespie said.

Gillespie denied reports that he’s heading up Romney’s search committee for a vice presidential nominee.

“I saw that report about my heading up the vice presidential search committee. It was news to me, and I don’t, as far as I know, it’s not accurate,” Gillespie said.".......

How can Obama demand anybody release anything? Where are his college transcripts, etc?

When you file for an extension you must pay anything you owe *at that time*...so he's not delaying *payment*.He certainly can release how much he paid.

“Republicans call Romney tax return squabble a distraction”

....Arizona Sen. John McCain, who endorsed Romney in January, said releasing a decade’s worth of personal tax information wasn’t necessary for a presidential candidate. Democrats often point out Romney disclosed several years of returns to McCain’s own presidential campaign in 2008 during the vice presidential vetting process.

“He gave that to me and it was confidential, and so did a lot of other people,” McCain said on the CBS program “Face the Nation.”

“We agreed with everybody we considered that would remain confidential. John Kerry only introduced two years, Mitt Romney did, I did, two years is sufficient. And frankly, I’m not sure that’s the key issue Americans are worried about,” McCain said.

Priebus also pointed to presidential campaigns of the past, saying Romney would eventually follow the same precedent.

“The type of the rigorous financial disclosure requirements when running for president are so expansive and vast that if you were to look at what John Kerry, John McCain, all of these other presidential candidates have revealed, Mitt Romney is going to do the same thing,” Priebus said.....

I don’t care how much Mitt makes. I do care that the “most electable” candidate — the businessman — the turnaround king and the “clean” outsider isn’t going to put this out there, allowing it to become a distraction. Like he didn’t KNOW it would be?

All Romney has to say is that he will release his tax returns when Obama releases his transcripts from college...i guarantee...the demand for tax release will disappear

This issue would hurt Romney in a campaign against Obama, no matter how Gillespie, Madden, McCain, and Priebus try to spin it.

Exactly. And we’re supposed to cast our lot with this kind of boneheadedness?

No it won't. The media will ignore the transcripts and ask for Mitt's returns and use this photo for emphasis while speculating about off-shore accounts and 14% tax rates.

Romney should tell Zero, “I’ll release more tax returns when you release your education records.”

Let’s forget about all of Obama’s past as a private citizen.

Let’s start with his public life only.

When will Obama release records from his 2 years as a Illinois State Senator?

Hillary tried to get them so it’s politically correct and liberally acceptable to ask.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1107/6821.html

Obama records requests prove fruitless

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) dodged questions Sunday about releasing papers from his eight years as an Illinois state senator, and his campaign has not answered records requests from the state’s two largest newspapers.

He’s rich, we know it.

Almost as much as Kerry is via Kerry’s wife.

We also know Mitt has received 4,595,908 popular votes and Santorum, Gingrich and Paul have a total of 6,684,884 popular votes.

Sadly in this case the popular vote doesn’t matter.

And it doesn’t matter that Mitt is rich. It matters that his refusal to disclose his tax returns is causing a democrat talking point.
