What Conservative Media?
patriotstatesman ^ | April 15, 2012 | Josh Painter

Posted on 04/15/2012 8:33:29 PM PDT by Marguerite

At least we could, until quite recently, take solace that we had our own conservative media bastion, although it was nowhere near the size and the scope of the “lamestream media” (a term coined by Bernard Goldberg and made popular by Sarah Palin).

But at some point after the turn of the century, just as a majority of Americans began to visualize the true proportions of the larger media’s malpractice, our own little conservative press safe house had suffered a nasty termite infestation. Out of sight and out of mind behind the virtual walls of our conservative citadel of communications, hungry little pests were devouring the very foundation of that once proud citadel. There were signs that the framework was being eroded, but just a few on the right were paying enough attention to notice. Two yardsticks by which to measure just how deep into establishment Republican waters the erstwhile conservative press has drifted are Reagan conservatives Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin.

The first two-by-four to crumble was National Review. When founder William F. Buckley’s son Christopher endorsed Barrack Obama for president in 2008, that act of apparent treason to the conservative cause was largely viewed as an aberration, not a symptom of a problem which ran much deeper. It was not until 2011, after an NR editorial attacked Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry, that Rush Limbaugh observed that the publication had morphed from being the voice of conservatism into the voice of Republicanism, or to be more precise, the voice of Beltway Republicanism. And the new motto of the GOP establishment was unmistakable: “In Mitt Romney We Trust.” That message has been reinforced by numerous NRO articles and blog posts, with only occasional opposing views being published on the website and fewer still in the print version. National Review has criticized Sarah Palin in editorials, and contributors such as Mona Charen have lambasted the former Alaska Governor in columns and on NRO’s The Corner blog. Among the few contributors at NRO who have been generally fair to Palin and Gingrich are Andrew McCarthy and Robert Costa.

Another stud in the conservative media framework showed that it had been compromised in mid-December when The Washington Examiner not only endorsed Mitt Romney, but viciously went after Gingrich while doing so. The Examiner is owned by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz, who contributed the maximum legal amount to Romney’s 2008 presidential run.

“I’m prompted to ask, “What conservative media?” And why the rush by so many erstwhile conservatives to embrace a moderate for president? The argument given most often is “electablity,” but John Hawkins and Milton Wolf have provided plenty of evidence that Romney’s purported electablity is little more than a myth. Too many conservatives have either forgotten Ronald Reagan or have turned their backs on his principles. That’s a shame, because although Reagan’s time has passed, his principles are eternal. One of the principles espoused by the great president was to reject “pale pastels” and settle for nothing less than “bold colors” from the candidates we support and the issues we espouse. Those colors have become so watered down that it’s difficult to distinguish them in this day and age. And that doesn’t bode well for the future of the conservative cause.”

Weak pastel colors deny the very ESSENCE of Conservatism, which in its heart and roots is a philosophy and movement of STRENGTH and POWER, of CONVICTION and ASSUREDNESS.

Conservatism is by its nature BOLD. It is PRINCIPLED.

The problem is, this adherence to principles scares some people who by rights ought to embrace them. Hence the weakness... and the running for cover when principles are challenged and ACTION is required. True Conservatives do not run for cover, they stand and fight for what is RIGHT!!

Personally I believe RINO’s are Leftists. Not just self serving moderates trying to hold onto their gravytrain, but actual Leftists.

I recall in my earlier days at FR, having lurked since 2001 commentary with warnings the “Moderate Republican’s” were attempting to “redefine Conservatism to the Left”.

We all know Mitt Romney is NO Conservative, yet “they” define him as a Conservative as they press on with his anointment. Perhaps they think they have impressed their conservatism sufficiently to say it’s a done deal.

All we have to do in order to measure Romney's conservatism is to look at his deeds, not at his ever-change-direction words. He has a baggage, check THAT out:

I'm not impressed with what the GOP ghost-writers put on a paper for Romney to read aloud. I looked up his career since the 80ies, and I don't LIKE what I've found out. The more I read about, the less I like him.

I’m with you, Donna, and have to believe that for something like freedom to be so salvageable and so worthy of a knock down, drag out fight to the death to keep, any fighting for it is utterly resisted, and is instead met with blindness, silence, lethargy and betrayal of both God and country.

All this from our own and among our own. This can not be a simple political anomaly, or accident. The evil is now too palpable, boldly obvious, and ever increasing.

God, we know, sets our leaders before us for our good or for our chastisement. HE has something in mind when HE does so, and we are going to deserve it. We either repent and reverse, or the mountains and hills surely beckon.

We know Romney’s awful record on abortion, socialistic mandates on the people and on the Catholic Church in MA, his tolerance for “gay” rights and his signing off on gay marriages, and we know Newt’s personal sins.

Only one of the two has repented. It’s Newt, or Obama. Romney is not an option.

Agreed, Katie.

That article is jam-packed with documented facts about both Gingrich’s and Romney’s performances while in office, and completely exposes Romney for the worthless liberal he is, while setting the facts straight on Newt’s excellent career accomplishments.

There’s absolutely no question that Gingrich is the more qualified candidate. None whatsoever.

.....”I’m not impressed with what the GOP ghost-writers put on a paper for Romney to read aloud.....”

Neither am I. That makes two of us out of how many millions of American voters?

We mustn’t lock ourselves into preaching to the choir.

We must recognize what the citizenry are being told by Leftist interests via the MSM, what the damage is from what they’re being told, and have been told, and act accordingly to get the real picture painted for them. Few of them are like you/we at FR, and take the time to question what they are told by the Leftist MSM.

THEY call Mitt Romney a “Conservative”. THAT is redefining what conservatism is as THEY are THE NEWS MEDIA to millions of Americans, and we have to face that fact.

It’s getting the information as to what conservatism truly is, and what it means to the revitalization of America to the Leftist MSM brainwashed voters that matters the most.

You needn’t waste your time convincing me. I am on your side.

Thanks for posting the excerpts of my opinion piece.

As a Fred Thompson supporter in 2008, I had to make a “lesser of the evils” choice and was mistakenly led to believe that Romney was “more conservative” than Juan McCain. It was only some weeks later that I discovered how Romney and his campaign had used Alinsky tactics to smear Fred and force him out of the race. It became apparent that Romney’s seeming embrace of conservatism after governing as a liberal was just for show.

My vow then was “won’t get fooled again,” learned how to thoroughly vet candidates, and I’ve tried to support only Reagan conservatives since.

Welcome to FR, Josh

I appreciate your article very much, because you’ve written down in a brilliant style, what I and many others think about the deliquescence of the conservative media.

When I see the despite with which Thomas Sowell’s opinions are met by the so-called conservative pundits, or George Will treating a Reaganite from the first hour like Gingrich as “marxist”, the treasonous attitude to all conservative ideals displayed on National Review, Fox and radio, I understand better how the same “conservatives” fought tooth and nail against Reagan calling his platform “voodoo economics” in 1980...

No one expressed it better than Newt in his speech at the CPAC this year:

http://youtu.be/MU_LWYRcGBk

“CPAC was founded to challenge the Republican establishment. The fact is when Ronald Reagan came here in 1974 and gave his famous speech on bold colors, no pale pastels that was a decade in from Reagan’s first great national speech for Barry Goldwater, “A Time for Choosing.” When Reagan campaigned in 1980, you could see the gap between the Republican establishment and the conservative movement. Reagan campaigned on supply side economics, lower taxes, less regulation, more American energy; praise for people who created jobs. The establishment called it voodoo economics.

The GOP establishment has a single word they used with contempt for conservative ideas. They say they’re “unrealistic.” So creating 16 million jobs under Reagan, unrealistic. Ending the Soviet Union, unrealistic.

And Faith Whittlesey, who was in the Reagan White House and then ambassador to Switzerland, wrote a brilliant piece recently for Newsmax pointing out that the fight she and I were in as conservatives against the Republican establishment over the very question of whether or not we should have an anti-Soviet campaign.

The 1994 Contract with America — unrealistic. The House Republican majority of 1994, which by the way was elected by the largest one-party increase in an off year in American history, 9 million new voters — unrealistic.

Reforming welfare so two out of three people would go to work or go to school — unrealistic.

Cutting taxes with the largest capital gains tax cut, first tax cut in 16 years, unemployment drops to 4.2 percent, 11 million new jobs — unrealistic. Four years of a balanced budget — unrealistic.

For the Republican establishment, managing the decay is preferable to changing the trajectory because changing the trajectory requires real fights and requires a real willingness to roll up sleeves and to actually take on the left.

And that’s why the Republican establishment, whether it’s in 1996 or in 2008, can’t win a presidential campaign, because they don’t have the toughness, they don’t have the commitment, and they don’t have the philosophy necessary to build a majority in this country.”

Here’s another gem to be read, saved and reposted EVERYWHERE:

The Case for Newt Gingrich - By Peter Ferrara

http://spectator.org/archives/2011/12/28/the-case-for-newt-gingrich/

“He led us to victory before. Spectacular, historic victory. The strategy and content of his 1994 Contract with America propelled the Republicans to a 54-seat gain in 1994 to win control of the House of Representatives, which had been held by the Republicans for only two out of the previous 62 years. Even the Reagan Revolution in the 1980s failed to achieve that.

Then, for all the caterwauling we have heard about how he handled the budget battles with Clinton, he led the House Republicans in 1996 to their first re-election as a majority since 1928, almost 70 years.

Moreover, once in power, Gingrich delivered on his promises, and maintained a solid conservative record. He carried out the Contract with America in full, holding a vote on every item as promised, most of which did pass (which was not promised). His record was unswervingly pro-life, pro-gun and Second Amendment, and anti-tax. Indeed, he worked closely with the conservative activist groups on every one of these issues.”

Newt Gingrich, Reagan’s Young Lieutenant — By Jeffrey Lord

“Why? Why is Romney going after Gingrich on his supposed lack of Reagan ties?

The ignorance this shows about what was actually happening inside the Reagan Revolution — not to mention the positive change Ronald Reagan and his lieutenants like Newt Gingrich were bringing to Washington and America — is almost painful to watch. Romney flounders, giving the impression that he is learning conservatism as others learn painting by numbers. “

The lie of the Moderate, the Leftist, the RINO for years now is their conservatism. They knew that to reach the base of the Republican Party they had to be “conservative”, so they claimed to be. They lied about their credentials as is the Leftist way. Lefty’s lie. Lying is something the Left is really good at.

Time has passed, the lie has been established. Conservatism has been redefined. Perhaps NOT to you and I, but to the masses. If nothing else the old trick of confusing the masses to make them more malleable to the lies of the Left has been their biggest achievement.

Myself, and others here at FR were warning of this redefining of Conservatism by the Leftist RINO’s years ago. It was inevitable. The Left, the radical Left took over the Democrat Party, and have control of the Republican Party. I defy anybody to deny the Left is involved in the leadership that brings us Romney, that brought us McCain, that threatens us with the likes of Jeb Bush.

Thank you for a great thread and the link to Newt’s youtube excerpts - I watched all of them and the shorts of President Reagan that come up on the same page. This is better than Prozac - these videos chirked me up wonderfully!

I want this man for my president.
