Mitt Romney flashback: Stay-at-home moms need to learn ‘dignity of work’
Washington Post ^ | 4/15/2012 | Ezra Klein

Mitt Romney, it turns out, was against calling stay-at-home mothers “working moms” before he was for it.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes broke the news this morning. Back in January, Romney appeared at a town hall even in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he explained his position on welfare.

“While I was governor,” Romney said, “85 percent of the people on a form of welfare assistance in my state had no work requirement. I wanted to increase the work requirement. I said, for instance, that even if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work. And people said, ‘Well that’s heartless,’ and I said ‘No, no, I’m willing to spend more giving daycare to allow those parents to go back to work. It’ll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.’”

Read that again: “I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.” And by “individuals,” Romney means “mothers.”

You got it right. A mother should certainly be free to stay at home with her children if she can support them financially (or has a husband that will do so). She has no right to expect taxpayers to pick up the bill for her living expenses if she has no income.

Mitt’s family - like almost all families - made sacrifices so that Ann could stay home with the kids. Obama’s family chose a different path because Michelle was the breadwinner. Neither one is wrong.

What would be more interesting would be to explosre the candidates positions on incentivizing people to work. My wife quit her job because it did not pay for her to work thanks to AMT. We actually lost money when she was working and paying for daycare. A system that disincentivizes productive educated adults from working is a system that is doomed to failure, see, e.g. Greece, France, etc.

Try and keep up, this is not about me but Romney.

In other words, you don't want to answer the question. That's an answer in itself. Have a nice day.

You did not ask a question, you made a statement.

yep- more kids shoudl grow up WITHOUT their moms or dads at hoem to guide them- what a brilliant article- kids would be so much better mouthing off to ‘caretakers’ who aren;t related to htem or care one whit about htem than they are havign a lovign mother at home nurturing htem and guiding them i nthe ways of life-

Yet aniother liberal who mocks the proven insitution of family and htinks that a mother working doens’t have any effect on children- CLUELESS

You did not ask a question, you made a statement.

A question mark is at the end of a question. I asked a question. You don't want to answer. That's fine. That's answer enough.

Nope, just using a question mark does not make it a question.
You made a statement telling me what my view is, and added a question mark.

LOL It's okay - you don't have to answer. That tells me all I need to know.

When you ask a question, I will answer it? Just using a question mark, doesn’t make it a question?
